Police Confront Rising Number of Mentally Ill Suspects

“Police officers find themselves playing dual roles as law enforcers and psychiatric social workers. The problem has gotten worse in recent years, according to mental health and criminal justice experts, as state and local governments have cut back on mental health services for financial reasons. People with mental illness are often arrested in connection with minor crimes like disorderly conduct or trespassing. Mr. Boyd, whom the Albuquerque police said had a history of violence and who appeared to be turning away from the officers when he was shot, attracted law enforcement attention for camping illegally.”

Cop who randomly slammed woman to the ground receives threats

“The Tucson police officer who was caught on video brutally pummeling a female student as she walked innocuously near the campus of the University of Arizona has been identified as Joel Mann, according to local ABC affiliate KGUN.  Mann, a sergeant with 18 years of experience, was one of a legion of officers deployed in full, pseudo-military riot gear. He wore a helmet and face shield.  In the video, Mann comes out of absolutely nowhere and violently pushes woman over a metal frame. She is smashed head over heels to the ground.  The woman had neither a helmet nor a face shield. She was wearing shorts.”

Will the Internet Complicate the Evolution of the Marijuana Industry?

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“The marijuana genie is likely ‘out of the bottle.’ Powerful players will certainly use the tools of mercantilism to create regulations that benefit their business models – and in a sense the industry will evolve along predictable lines, with smaller players being bought out by larger interests.  But we would be surprised if it stops there. Opportunities not yet available may soon become available to entrepreneurs who wish to take advantage of them. The end of marijuana prohibitions may also serve to ignite a larger scrutiny of how public and private sectors interact on a variety of fronts. What the power elite has seemingly set in motion may be more difficult to control than intended.”

DEA Says Pot Prohibition Protects Dogs; Cop-Killed Dogs Disagree

“Testifying before a House subcomittee yesterday, the head of the Drug Enforcement Administration warned that marijuana legalization is bad for dogs. DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart was not talking about the pot-sniffing canines who are out of work in Colorado and Washington now that the odor of cannabis is no longer probable cause for a search. She was talking about pets that ingest marijuana-laced snacks.  The main concern is that marijuana, an anti-emetic, will make dogs less likely to vomit potentially dangerous foods into which it has been infused, such as butter and chocolate.  You know what else is bad for dogs? Marijuana prohibition.”

Drinking diet soda may trim your lifespan; linked to heart disease

“This is not the first study to report such findings. A 2012 study by French researchers published in ‘The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition’ found a strong correlation between diet drinks and increased risk of Type 2 diabetes. Women who drink ‘light’ beverages tend to consume 43% more than women who drink normal sugary drinks, it concluded. What’s more, when consumed in equal quantities, artificially sweetened drinks were associated with an increased risk of developing diabetes.  The global market for artificial sweeteners is projected to reach $1.68 billion by 2018 from $1.39 billion in 2012, according to market research group Global Industry Analysts.”

Tesla Model S security system vulnerable to outside hacking

“A security researcher has discovered a way to locate, hack and unlock Tesla Motors premiere Model S from a remote computer using traditional hacking techniques.  Nitesh Dhanjani announced his findings at the Black Hat Asia security conference in Singapore over the weekend, where the author of multiple books on hacking revealed that by cracking a six-character password transmitted wirelessly over the Internet, a hacker could locate and gain access to any Model S.  Using Dhanjani’s technique, hackers could find and break into Teslas to steal any contents inside the car, but would be unable to hijack and drive the car itself, which requires the owner’s electronic key fob.”

One Cyber Brick at a Time

“I gingerly handed over my hard-earned money to a couple of spam scammers who quickly disappeared.  I also managed to lose two websites to guys who assured me that their companies were established concerns that had been in business since Marconi invented the radio.  It wasn’t until I settled down, rolled up my sleeves, connected with some legitimate people, and focused on growing my business that success started coming my way.  I discovered that not being on one of the earlier Internet trains didn’t matter.  It was an advantage, because the Internet is like any other technology in that, over time, it becomes easier and easier … and less and less expensive.”

Interview with finance guru, entrepreneur Jeff Berwick

“I personally save a percentage of the profits of all my Bitcoin revenue I receive with no plans to sell.  I have been offering every product that my companies offer for Bitcoin for three years now so I have been constantly squirreling away bitcoins.  We have sold passports, offshore bank accounts and corporations, newsletter subscriptions to TDV and even condos that I offer through my company in Acapulco, AcaCondos and rentals at my hotel in Acapulco, Las Torres Gemelas Private Suites for bitcoins and as I stated my strategy is to keep a large percentage of my profit on those transactions in Bitcoin.”

4 Facts Every GLD Investor Must Know

“We did some digging into GLD’s 10-K – a comprehensive summary report of a company’s performance that must be submitted annually to the SEC – and found some interesting facts that we believe every GLD investor should know.  Here’s a hint: Unless you own more than $16 million worth of GLD shares, don’t expect to be redeeming them in physical gold anytime soon.  The Hard Assets Alliance, offers an easy way to buy and sell physical gold – and store it at a very reasonable rate in any one of six secure vaults in the US, the UK, Switzerland, Singapore, and Australia. Investors can take delivery of their gold anywhere in the world.”

6 worst home fixes for the money

“The magazine looked at prices on 35 popular home renovation projects — and just how much of that money homeowners can expect to recoup when they sell.  In the study, prices were based on national averages for time and materials supplied by skilled professionals (no DIY jobs here). While some projects moved the needle on home value more than others, most didn’t return 100 percent of the renovation cost at resale, according to the report. And the six projects that yielded the least at resale all returned less than 61 cents on the dollar.  Here, according to the 2014 Remodeling Magazine study, are the six home renovation projects that bring the smallest return at resale.”
