NSA program reaches ‘into the past’ to retrieve, replay phone calls

“The National Security Agency has built a surveillance system capable of recording ‘100 percent’ of a foreign country’s telephone calls, enabling the agency to rewind and review conversations as long as a month after they take place.  A senior manager for the program compares it to a time machine — one that can replay the voices from any call without requiring that a person be identified in advance for surveillance.  The voice interception program, called MYSTIC, began in 2009. Its RETRO tool, short for ‘retrospective retrieval,’ and related projects reached full capacity against the first target nation in 2011.”

Obama ordered to divulge legal basis for killing Americans with drones

“The so-called targeted-killing program—in which drones from afar shoot missiles at buildings, cars, and people overseas—began under the George W. Bush administration. The program, which sometimes kills innocent civilians, was broadened under Obama to include the killing of Americans.  Government officials from Obama on down have publicly commented on the program, but they claimed the Office of Legal Counsel’s memo outlining the legal rationale about it was a national security secret. The appeals court, however, said on Monday that officials’ comments about overseas drone attacks means the government has waived its secrecy argument.”

Missouri to fire deafening ‘sound cannons’ at drivers to deter speeding

“Missouri’s Department of Transportation is preparing to deploy the LRAD sound cannon  that’s been used to break up mass gatherings like Occupy Wall Street to warn motorists that they’re going too fast. The device emits a targeted, deafening siren that ‘easily penetrates the windshield and well-insulated cab of a car, even overriding the vehicle’s engine sounds and a radio turned up loud enough to jam to tunes at highway speeds.’  Missouri has committed to the technology by purchasing two of the pricey devices.  LRAD’s sirens can reach up to 153 decibels, more than enough to potentially cause hearing damage. This is technology that’s been deployed in war zones, after all.”

Airport security scrutinized after boy flies to Maui in plane’s wheel well

“Airport spokeswoman Rosemary Barnes said the SJC’s security program ‘meets and exceeds all federal requirements’ and works closely with the Transportation Security Administration and the San Jose Police Department. But the perimeter fence where the boy trespassed is monitored by the airport.  ‘No security program is 100 percent,’ Barnes said. ‘We’re continuing to review video to determine where in fact he was able to scale the section of fence line, how he as able to proceed onto a ramp and get himself into the wheel well of that aircraft.’  Barnes said the boy, under ‘cover of darkness,’ climbed a perimeter fence sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning.”

Of course, the politicians and bureaucrats take offense at this term, but how else do you describe a government that forbids Americans from grazing cattle on land they have used for over a century, from buying health insurance that does not met Obamacare’s standards, from trading with Cuba, or even from drinking raw milk? That so many in DC support the NSA spying and the TSA assaults on our privacy shows the low regard that too many in government have for our rights.”

“Coming off successes in Iraq and Afghanistan, it makes sense that the US should send troops to Ukraine, no?  When we first read this in the Washington Post, we thought it might be a late April Fools’ Day joke. Then we discovered the writer was sincere about it; apparently, James Jeffrey is a fool all year round.  The US has a global empire, supported by an unprecedented mountain of debt. All bubbles need to find their pins. And all empires need to blow themselves up. What Jeffrey is proposing is to speed up the process with more reckless troop deployments.  We’re with him all the way…  Push ol’ Humpty Dumpty off the wall and get it over with.”

At Least 46 Killed in Two Days of US Drone Strikes in Yemen

“After yesterday’s attack, which killed 21, reports of today’s strikes are still murky, but at least 25 more were killed, sending the figure to 46, and likely to rise even further as the figures continue to come in from remote areas.  Officially, the Yemeni government referred to the slain today as ‘leading and dangerous’ al-Qaeda figures, but tellingly offered not a single name of a single victim of the attacks.  While today’s victims remain a mystery, a number of civilian bystanders were confirmed killed in yesterday’s attack, which targeted a truckload of ‘suspects’ and destroyed some nearby cars.”

“One very critical point to understand is that you should NEVER state that you are expatriating to avoid taxes. It could end up complicating matters if you ever intend to return to the US.  If your dossier with the US government states that you renounced for tax purposes, that information should be assumed to be readily available to any number of agencies—including those dealing with visas and immigration.  Although the authority to exclude a person from re-entering US on that basis is of questionable validity, and formal regulations on this have never even been proposed, State Department guidance to overseas posts does explicitly state this as a reason to reject a visa application.”

‘Tax Freedom Day’ falls three days later this year for Americans

“The day when the nation collectively has made enough money to pay its total tax burden for the year is three days later this year, according to a new report.  According to a report released Monday by the Tax Foundation, this year Tax Freedom Day falls 111 days into 2014, on April 21.  By April 21, the group says, Americans will have made enough to pay the $3 trillion in federal taxes and $1.5 trillion in state taxes — more than they will spend on food clothing and housing combined.  If federal borrowing is included, the group calculated that Tax Freedom Day would fall 15 days later on May 6.”
