First Person Charged, Guns Seized Under Conn. Gun Registration Law

“Police arrested a 65-year-old man in Milford, Conn., after he allegedly shot a squirrel in his yard. Upon further investigation, officers recovered an unregistered ‘assault rifle’ and three ‘large-capacity magazines.’  Now James Toigo faces a plethora of gun-related charges, including unlawful discharge of a firearm, cruelty to an animal, first-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree breach of peace, failure to register an assault rifle and three counts of possessing large-capacity magazines.  The firearm used to shoot the squirrel was not the semi-automatic rifle that police later confiscated. Officers also seized ‘several’ other guns, even though they were not used in a crime and were legal.”

Japan PM’s militaristic gesture before Obama visit, China seizes ship

“Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has sent a ritual offering to the Yasukuni Shrine, seen by critics as a symbol of Japan’s past militarism, a move that may increase strains on Tokyo’s ties with Asian neighbours China and South Korea.  Adding to unease in the region, a Chinese maritime court in Shanghai seized a ship on Saturday owned by Japanese shipping firm Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, saying the company had failed to pay compensation stemming from a wartime contractual obligation.  The offering from Abe, who visited the shrine in December but opted not to go in person this time, was sent just before U.S. President Barack Obama’s three-day visit to Japan begins on Wednesday.”

Three Ways to NOT Pay Taxes… Legally

“The wealthy and shrewd have ways around pesky financial obligations, like paying taxes. With a little planning they can reduce their tax exposure to, sometimes, zero. And the best part? What they’re doing is completely legal. Bloomberg Businessweek’s Brendan Greeley explains how clever, law-abiding citizens have managed to give the taxman the slip.”

Facebook is reportedly prepping an e-money service in Ireland

“Facebook wants to be more than a social network — it is planning to facilitate financial services in the form of electronic money and remittances.  The report cites sources as saying that Facebook is weeks away from getting regulatory approval in Ireland for a service that lets users store money on Facebook and use it to pay others — what’s known as ‘e-money’. This means that Facebook will be able to issue units of stored monetary value that represent a claim against the company, and the e-money can be used throughout Europe in a process known as ‘passporting’.  E-money and remittances would help Facebook be more relevant in emerging markets.”

Former US Consumer Finance Watchdog Voices Support for Bitcoin

Raj Date, the former Deputy Director of the US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), a consumer finance watchdog, said in an interview this week that he supports – and is now investing in – bitcoin.  During a segment of Bloomberg Television’s ‘Street Smart,’ Date commented that, on a personal level, he sees a lot of potential in digital currencies like bitcoin.  In the interview, Date said that bitcoin has the potential to deliver faster and more secure payments than is currently possible for most consumers, and remarked that the pace of innovation could result in a broader evolution in digital currencies.”

U.S. Fed’s Kocherlakota says interested in bitcoin

“A top U.S. Federal Reserve official said on Tuesday he is interested in the fast-emerging bitcoin, although he scoffed at the idea that the virtual currency could replace the dollar.  Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank President Narayana Kocherlakota, speaking at a town hall at North Dakota State University, said he is interested in bitcoin as a technology, not as a currency.  He speculated that bitcoin could make payments among individuals faster. ‘That’s where I think the interest of it is, myself, as opposed to a new currency that’s going to drive the U.S. dollar out of circulation.'”

Texas Governor Candidate Welcomes ‘Bitcoin Community’ to Campaign

“Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, who’s running for governor against Wendy Davis, has a new plan to attract young, digitally-savvy voters: Bitcoin.  Abbott’s campaign announced this week that it would officially accept the cryptocurrency donations.  In a stump speech on Wednesday, Abbott said, ‘We welcome the Bitcoin community to join our team.’  Bitcoin users tend to be young, white, libertarian males. This is partly because Bitcoin is completely decentralized and outside the Federal Reserve’s purview. While Abbott isn’t one of the politicians calling to ‘End the Fed,’ he is definitely a proponent of states rights. As Attorney General, he sued the federal government 27 times.”
