And every day more articles and editorials appear that argue not just for the full legalization of pot but of illicit drugs in general. The best guess is that the power elite sees drug legalization as a global solution to a problem that knows no borders. One can make an argument that the ‘war on drugs’ may have been a kind of red herring designed to lead to the ‘directed history’ of an international solution. Of course, it is widely acknowledged that the ‘war on drugs’ has been a failure – but who would ever have thought it was going to be a success in the first place except for certain law enforcement types?”

Packet Alcohol More Abundant Than Water in West Africa

“With distribution networks spanning the entire Mano River Market of Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea, and Ivory Coast, their products find their way to even the deepest jungle villages, typically sold at small stands known as hokas, characteristically consisting of an umbrella and collapsible box.  Their products, packaged in small plastic bottles and pouches and referred to generically as ‘packet alcohol,’ are more abundant than purified water in some regions of West Africa, and a single packet costs around 500 Leoneans, or 11 cents. A variety of spirits, many flavored with fruits and herbs, are available, all with their own creative slogans and depictions.”

Legal Pot in the US Is Crippling Mexican Cartels

“Given the DEA’s historic relationship with the Sinaloa cartel, and the agency’s fury over legalized marijuana, it almost seems like the DEA wants to crush the legal weed market in order to protect the interests of their cartel friends. Almost.  ‘The DEA doesn’t want the drug war to end,’ said retired federal agent Terry Nelson, when asked about a possible connection between the agency’s hatred of legal pot and its buddies in Sinaloa. ‘If it ends, they don’t get their toys and their budgets. Once it ends, they aren’t going to have the kind of influence in foreign government. I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but where there’s smoke there’s probably fire.’

Money Up a Rat Hole: The “Space Fence” Boondoggle

“It isn’t a fence. It’s a $6 billion radar system that will monitor a tiny fraction of the space junk. One piece of junk, no larger than your thumb, can produce the Kessler effect. At 17,000 miles an hour, the little cannon ball has tremendous force. But the ‘Space Fence’ cannot monitor this size cannon ball.  There is no known solution to this problem. There is no program to solve it. The ‘Space Fence’ merely lets some Air Force enlisted person, who is staring at a screen, watch the chain reaction blow holes in the world’s space-based telecommunications system, impact by impact. Then why build it?  To subsidize the aerospace industry, you big silly.”

New Orleans replaces all public schools with charter schools

“An all-charter district signals the dismantling of the central school bureaucracy and a shift of power to dozens of independent school operators, who will assume all the corresponding functions: the authority to hire and fire teachers and administrators, maintain buildings, run buses and provide services to special-needs students.  Of the Recovery School District’s 600 employees, 510 will be out of a job by week’s end. All 33,000 students in the district must apply for a seat at one of the 58 public charter schools.  Just before [Katrina], the elected Orleans Parish School District was bankrupt and couldn’t account for about $71 million in federal money.”

Minnesota Libertarian arrested for collecting ballot signatures in a park

“Gubernatorial candidate Chris Holbrook was arrested for exercising his 1st Amendment rights while in a public park.  He and some supporters were peacefully gathering signatures  to achieve ballot access — a fundamental political freedom — but police insisted that he needed a permit and placed him in shackles.  Chris Holbrook, who is running for governor of Minnesota on the Libertarian Party ticket, has 2 weeks to gather 2,000 signatures in order to appear on the ballot.  This is a requirement of all minor parties in state-wide races in Minnesota.  Holbrook’s deadline is June 3rd.  Mr. Holbrook was taken away by police and charged with advertising without a license.”

Bitcoins to Survive Lull, Shake Industries, Wedbush Says

“Bitcoins, the virtual currency that fell by more than half after surging past $1,100 last year, are probably one to three years away from broader adoption that will challenge industries, Wedbush Securities Inc. analysts wrote.  Venture-capital investments in bitcoin businesses have doubled in less than three months, and programmers are bolstering security, the analysts wrote. As bitcoins catch on, they will cut into more than $300 billion in revenue generated by global payments and challenge industries that account for about 20 percent of U.S. gross domestic product, the analysts said.”

Dish Network Says It Will Accept Bitcoin

“Most of Dish Network’s 14 million subscribers are probably not Bitcoin users. But that will not stop the company from accepting payments in the virtual currency later this year.  Dish announced on Thursday that customers would be able to make manual payments in Bitcoin beginning in the third quarter. And while Dish may not be the first company to accept Bitcoin, it claims to be the largest — though the appeal of the payment option is still unclear. Retailers like Overstock.com and Virgin America already accept virtual currency, helped by new services that aim to make digital money easier to use.”

BitPay, Toshiba Partnership Will Bring Bitcoin to 6,000 New Merchants

“Bitcoin merchant payment processor BitPay has announced a new partnership with electronics manufacturer Toshiba that will integrate bitcoin payments into Toshiba’s touch-screen point-of-sale platform, VisualTouch.  BitPay will provide technical assistance for the purpose of integrating bitcoin payments into the existing VisualTouch system. VisualTouch is used by more than 6,000 client-companies in the hospitality, restaurant, grocery and retail sectors worldwide.  The news also follows BitPay’s Series A funding round in which it raised $30m from an investor pool led by Index Ventures.”

But that just goes to show you how grotesque the world has become.  Back at home, the feds brighten up the lives of people who live in tanning salons. Sales of houses to the top 1% of buyers on Long Island rose 72% in the first four months of this year. The bottom 99%, meanwhile, actually bought fewer houses.  The whole housing rebound story is a fraud… another distortion caused by the Fed… and another example of how the insiders transfer wealth from the outsiders to themselves. In Oakland, California, sales to the 1% rose 45 times faster than sales to the rest.”
