US Sends Troops to Chad on Nigerian Schoolgirl Hunt

“President Obama has informed Congress today that approximately 80 troops have been sent to Chad in a ‘support’ capacity to take part in the search for 276 kidnapped Nigerian schoolgirls.  The troops, mostly Air Force personnel, will handle surveillance flights and drone flights over the area along the Chad-Nigeria border, where the girls are believed to be held.  The Predator drones are now being flown out of the Chad capital of N’Djamena, and officials say the troops maintaining those drones will remain until the kidnapping situation is resolved.  US flights have been scanning the area for 10 days, and have provided no details on what, if anything, they’ve found during that time.”

After 11 years and $1.5 billion, Homeland Security H.Q. to be scrapped

“The construction of a massive new headquarters for the Department of Homeland Security, billed as critical for national security and the revitalization of Southeast Washington, is running more than $1.5 billion over budget, is 11 years behind schedule and may never be completed, according to planning documents and federal officials.  A decade after planning began, consensus is still elusive. Barely any additional work has been funded beyond the Coast Guard headquarters, which opened last year. Key structures such as the DHS operations center and a headquarters for the Federal Emergency Management Agency mostly remain ink on planning documents.”

Robert Ringer: When Not to Save Money

rringer-11

“Making money is a direct result of the amount of time spent creating valuable products and figuring out ways to market them.  Marketing is the engine of every successful company, because it leads to sales — and sales lead to profits.  It all gets down to how you spend your time.  Would you rather spend it focusing on problems or opportunities?  Any overhead, no matter how small, is a problem if your income isn’t high enough to cover it.  And, in theory, no amount of overhead is too high if your income is great enough to cover it — preferably many times over.”

Where the World’s Unsold Cars Go To Die

“Houston…We have a problem!…Nobody is buying brand new cars anymore!  Well they are, but not on the scale they once were.  Millions of brand new unsold cars are just sitting redundant on runways and car parks around the world.  There, they stay, slowly deteriorating without being maintained.  Below is an image of a massive car park at Swindon, United Kingdom, with thousands upon thousands of unsold cars just sitting there with not a buyer in sight. The car manufacturers have to buy more and more land just to park their cars as they perpetually roll off the production line.  There is proof that the worlds recession is still biting and wont let go.”

Canines’ Cancer-Sniffing Snouts Showing 90%-Plus Accuracy

“With 220 million olfactory cells in a canine snout, compared with 50 million for humans, dogs have long helped on search-and-rescue. Now, a growing body of evidence supports the possible use of canines by clinicians. The largest study ever done on cancer-sniffing dogs found they can detect prostate cancer by smelling urine samples with 98 percent accuracy. At least one application is in the works seeking U.S. approval of a kit using breath samples to find breast cancer.  When dogs sniff for cancer, they are detecting the chemicals emitted by a tumor.  VOCs have been found in the breath of lung cancer patients and colon cancer patients, as well as in the urine of prostate cancer patients.”

Mind-controlled prosthetic arm from Segway inventor gets FDA approval

“The prosthetic device comes from a company founded by Segway inventor Dean Kamen, and it is roughly the size and weight of an adult arm.  The arm is controlled by electromyogram electrodes placed on the remaining portion of the human arm. Those sensors pick up electric signals from muscle movements in the upper arm, and a computer in the robotic arm can tell what type of maneuver the user wants to make. The results are impressive: with the arm, amputees in clinical trials were able to perform tasks once thought impossible for a prosthetic limb. They could use zippers and keys, and they could pick up objects like grapes and eggs without crushing them.”

Google’s real plan behind the purchase of the Nest thermostat

“Google purchased Nest back in January this year for $3.2B and people everywhere are still wondering why.  The number of Nests sold is already in the millions. But it’s not like I’m going to go and buy another one anytime soon, which seems like it would be a problem for Google. Before Nest was acquired by Google, it had already solved this conundrum however. A seldom reported business model the Nest has been slowly building is around annual subscriptions to energy providers rather than consumers.  A dozen or so major energy providers in the US are paying a fee to Nest for each subscriber annually, somewhere in the range of $40 / customer / year.”

NRG Expands Nest Thermostat Partnership [2013]

“At the Bloomberg New Energy Finance Summit, Crane discussed a re-imagined industry in which consumers choose how much – if any – energy they draw from the power grid for their daily use. NRG is investing in disruptive technologies like home solar panels, electric vehicle charging stations and smart energy solutions that will answer customers’ demands for energy choices in their daily lives.  The Nest learns about customers’ lifestyles to automatically adjust the temperature when they’re away and creates a personalized schedule based on temperature-change history. It also guides users to energy-efficient temperatures when they’re home.”

NRG Energy Deploying Dean Kamen’s Solar-Smart In-Home Generator

“Beacon 10 can generate electricity from natural gas, work with a battery and rooftop solar, and provide backup in the case of a grid outage. Deka Research is headed by Dean Kamen, a renowned inventor best known for creating the Segway transporter who has worked extensively with Stirling engines. Earlier this year at the Fortune Brainstorm Green conference, NRG Energy showed a portable Stirling engine, and Crane said that the company is working with Kamen to test 200 of the machines in homes.  Beacon 10 is capable of producing 15 kilowatts of power, can send excess energy to the grid, and is slightly larger than a washing machine.”
