Elon Musk Wins Suit Against Boeing Venture, On Basis Of Russia Sanctions

“A federal claims judge granted late Wednesday an injunction sought by SpaceX’s Elon Musk that prohibits the Air Force from granting a contract to an American group planning on purchasing Russian rockets.  In his suit, Musk contended that the government’s contract to a joint Boeing-Lockheed venture was not competitive, and that the venture’s plan to purchase Russian rockets went against the spirit of new U.S. sanctions against that country for its incursion into Ukraine.”

Russia to ban US from using Space Station over Ukraine sanctions

“Russia is to deny the US future use of the International Space Station beyond 2020 and will also bar its rocket engines from launching US military satellites as it hits back at American sanctions imposed over Ukraine crisis.  Russia’s deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin announced a series of punitive measures on Tuesday against the US in response to sanctions imposed after Russia annexed Crimea.  The Space Station is manned by both American and Russian crew, but the only way to reach it is by using Russia’s Soyuz spacecraft.  Mr Rogozin said US plans to deny export licences for some high-technology items were a blow to Russian industry.”

New Drums of War

“The story begins 25 years ago, in 1989.  That was the pivotal year for the most dramatic peaceful transformation of modern history.   The transition to market-based economies created massive opportunities for investors. We saw a huge increase in cross-border trade and foreign direct investment. Almost simultaneously, the emergence of the digital revolution brought a decrease in international transaction costs. The Asian tigers and the BRIC countries — Brazil, Russia, India, and China — grew exponentially.  In this environment, the mere thought of regional conflict seemed absurd. And anyone talking about global conflict would inevitably be invited to check in to the nearest insane asylum.”

Questions remain in Chinese earthquake that killed more than 80,000

“The disaster provoked widespread grief in China, but also outrage after it emerged 7,000 schools were badly damaged in the southwestern province, triggering accusations of shoddy construction, corner-cutting and possible corruption, especially as many other buildings nearby held firm.  The aftermath of the earthquake saw the rise to prominence as a government critic of artist Ai Weiwei, who organised a citizens’ probe into the school collapses. The campaign led to him being badly beaten by police when he tried to testify in support of an activist who had investigated the issue.”

Relaxed One-child Policy Intensifies China Midwife Shortage

“Guangdong province is expected to see a big baby boom after relaxing its birth control policy in late March to allow couples to have a second baby if either parent is an only child.  With a population of more than 100 million, Guangdong tops the country’s most populous provinces. About 150,000 households in Guangdong are qualified to have a second child.  It is forecast that Guangdong will see the number of babies born increase by 10,000 to 15,000 in 2014.  China’s family planning policy was first introduced in the late 1970s to rein in the surging population by limiting most urban couples to one child and most rural couples to two children, if the first born was a girl.”

Chinese woman, 64, allowed to defy one-child policy with IVF twins

“Mrs Hailin said that she and her husband wanted to have the twins to ‘survive and free myself from loneliness.’  So, in a rare move for the country which enforces a one-child policy, a military hospital in Heifei agreed to give Mrs Hailin and her husband IVF treatment.  In November last year, the Chinese government announced couples could have two children if one parent is an only child.  An estimated one million families in the country have lost their sole descendant since the one child policy took effect in the late 1970s, and another four to seven million are expected to do so in the next 20 to 30 years.  Such families face uncertain futures, with no one to help them through old age.”

26 Years of Growth: Shanghai Then and Now

“Reuters photographer Carlos Barria recently took this amazing shot, recreating the same framing and perspective as a photograph taken in 1987, showing what a difference 26 years can make. The setting is Shanghai’s financial district of Pudong, dominated by the Oriental Pearl Tower at left, and the new 125-story Shanghai Tower, China’s tallest building and the world’s second tallest skyscraper, at 632 meters (2,073 ft) high, scheduled to finish by the end of 2014. Shanghai, the largest city by population in the world, has been growing at a rate of about 10 percent a year the past 20 years, and now is home to 23.5 million people — nearly double what it was back in 1987.”

Anti-China riots in Vietnam ease after 1,400 protesters arrested

“Anti-China protests in Vietnam eased yesterday after the arrest of more than 1,400 demonstrators.  There were no reports of fresh violence following the deadly wave of unrest that swept through 22 of Vietnam’s 63 provinces from Tuesday.  It was triggered by China’s deployment of an oil rig in the disputed Paracel Islands in the South China Sea.  More than 400 factories were damaged by mobs and the Chinese foreign ministry confirmed yesterday that two Chinese nationals had been killed.  Many Chinese in Vietnam were still fearful for their safety yesterday as speculation mounted about another demonstration tomorrow.”

John Kerry calls Beijing ‘provocative’ in South China Sea disputes

“China and the United States exchanged heated words yesterday over the recent tensions between Beijing and its neighbours about disputed territory in the South China Sea.  ‘[John Kerry] said China’s introduction of an oil rig and numerous government vessels in waters disputed with Vietnam was provocative,’ US State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said, referring to a telephone call between the US secretary of state and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.  Wang called on the US to be objective and urged it to ‘stick to its promises, and act and speak cautiously’, according to a statement on the Foreign Ministry’s website.”
