Vietnamese Take to Streets to Protest China Oil Rig

“Vietnam’s communist government allowed thousands of citizens to protest in the nation’s biggest cities to denounce a Chinese oil rig placed in contested waters that has led to clashes between ships from the two countries.  Vietnam said Chinese boats rammed its vessels, fired water cannons and used low-flying aircraft in a confrontation over the rig close to the Paracel Islands that both countries claim. China the next day accused Vietnamese ships of provoking the clash by crashing into its boats.  The U.S. has criticized China for taking ‘provocative’ and ‘unilateral’ actions. Spokeswoman Jen Psaki said that China had engaged in ‘dangerous conduct and intimidation.'”

H.K. issues Vietnam travel warning after mobs torch Chinese factories

“The Hong Kong government issued an amber travel warning for Vietnam after protesters there vandalised hundreds of foreign-owned factories and torched at least 15 of them.  The riots followed a large protest by workers on Tuesday against China’s recent placement of an oil rig in disputed waters around the Paracel Islands in the South China Sea.  The rioting in Binh Duong province followed protests by up to 20,000 workers at industrial parks near Ho Chi Minh City. Smaller groups of men attacked factories they believed were mainland Chinese-run, but many were Taiwanese or South Korean, the provincial government said.”

Faber Long China Via Hong Kong; Vietnam Also Attractive

“In Hong Kong, you have reasonably good corporate governance, you have very-well-managed companies, which are owned largely by families. So the families are ready to be conservative in their dealings. They have low leverage. So if you believe that China is bottoming out and going up, I would own some Hong Kong shares, as I do.  Another recovery play—a market that has a similarly poor performance to China over the last few years—is Vietnam, which is very cheap, which has deleverage and improving fundamentals in terms of growing trade surplus, rising exports and so on. So I think Vietnam is better than China itself, if you believe in the Chinese recovery.”

Marc Faber: Massive Financial Crisis May Be Coming

“Such a crisis could begin in the second half of the year, he tells CNBC.  One problem is debt. Total credit — including government, corporate and consumer debt — as a percentage of GDP is 30 percent higher in advanced economies than in 2007, Faber explains.  This isn’t exactly blissful news for the economy. ‘I don’t think that is the economy recovering at all. We have in the emerging economies a slowdown, export growth is nonexistent.’  Geopolitics aren’t helping things either, he adds, citing turmoil in Ukraine and the South China Sea.  So what can central banks do?  ‘They have something left — that is to throw even more money down the drain,’ he argues.”

Holder Admits, Calls For Rollback Of ‘Excessive’ Use Of Juvenile Solitary

“Attorney General Eric Holder called for an end to ‘excessive’ use of solitary confinement in juvenile facilities on Wednesday, saying that the practice ‘can be dangerous, and a serious impediment to the ability of juveniles to succeed once released.’  DOJ has previously taken action against juvenile correctional facilities in Ohio and California, and Holder said the Justice Department has received reports ‘of young people who have been held in solitary confinement for up to 23 hours a day, often with no human interaction at all.’ In some cases, Holder said, ‘children were held in small rooms with windows that were barely the width of their own hands.'”

Dept of Agriculture Orders Submachine Guns with 30 Round Magazines

“A May 7th solicitation by the U.S. Department of Agriculture seeks ‘the commercial acquisition of submachine guns [in] .40 Cal. S&W.’  According to the solicitation, the Dept. of Agriculture wants the guns to have an ‘ambidextrous safety, semiautomatic or 2 round [bursts] trigger group, Tritium night sights front and rear, rails for attachment of flashlight (front under fore group) and scope (top rear), stock collapsible or folding,’ and a ’30 rd. capacity’ magazine.  They also want the submachine guns to have a ‘sling,’ be ‘lightweight,’ and have an ‘oversized trigger guard for gloved operation.'”

Politician and paedophile among first to ask Google to ‘be forgotten’

“An ex-politician seeking re-election has asked to have links to an article about his behaviour in office removed.  A man convicted of possessing child abuse images has requested links to pages about his conviction to be wiped.  And a doctor wants negative reviews from patients removed from the results.  The original case was brought by a Spanish man who complained that an auction notice of his repossessed home on Google’s search results had infringed his privacy.  The ruling surprised many because it contradicted the advice of the European Union’s advocate general who said last year that search engines were not obliged to honour such requests.”

Not in America, you say? But you’d be wrong. Here, based on e-mail records provided by the city of Peoria to Ars Technica, is what that sort of investigation looks like.  The entire farcical situation concluded without charges; Peoria County State’s Attorney Jerry Brady declined to prosecute anyone over the Twitter account.”

Woman records own arrest, gets charged with wiretapping

“A Massachusetts woman faces charges of allegedly using a hidden mobile phone to audio-record her own suspicion-of-disorderly-conduct arrest.  When police inventoried her purse, they said they found a mobile phone secretly recording the incident, allegedly in violation of state wiretapping regulations.  Under Massachusetts law, people may record police officers in public places, but only if the officers are aware that a recording is taking place, according to case law.  In 2011, a federal appeals court ruled that a Boston woman openly filming police activity had her constitutional rights violated when she was arrested for filming an arrest of somebody else.”
