Ukip wins European elections with ease to set off political earthquake

“The Eurosceptic party’s victory marked the first time in modern history that neither Labour nor the Conservatives have won a British national election. The Liberal Democrats suffered a near-total wipeout losing all but one of its 11 MEPs.  The influential Conservative MEP Daniel Hannan called for a pre-election pact with Ukip and demanding the Foreign Office toughen its renegotiation stance on Europe.  The main parties moved on Sunday to show they regarded the Ukip threat as serious. Iain Duncan Smith, the work and pensions secretary, announced that he aims to halve the amount of time – from six to three months – that EU migrants can claim benefits.”

“The president is right to be upset over the mistreatment of US military veterans, especially those who return home with so many physical and mental injuries. But his outrage over military abuse is selective. He ignores the most egregious abuse of the US armed forces: sending them off to fight, become maimed and die in endless conflicts overseas that have no connection to US national security.  It is ironic that the same week the president condemned the alleged mistreatment of veterans by the VA, he announced that he was sending 80 armed troops to Chad to help look for a group of girls kidnapped by the Nigerian Islamist organization Boko Haram.”

U.S. Gov. Gets $2.6 Billion In Credit Suisse ‘Money Laundering’ Case

“Credit Suisse is the largest financial company to plead guilty to the non-crime of ‘money laundering’ in 20 years.  The plea marks the end of an era. One of the shell entities implicated, according to the government, dated back a century – or just after the creation of the federal tax code and the income tax.   Of the $2.6 billion fine, The Department of Justice will receive $1.8 billion and New York State’s top financial regulator, Benjamin Lawsky, will receive $715 million of the stolen loot.  With the FATCA coming into full effect on January 1, 2016, and the US government actively prosecuting banks, only savvy Americans will be able to find financial institutions abroad to service them.”

CertusBank Ex-Execs, Ousted Over Lavish Expenses, Now Suing

“The American Banker article cited: ‘nearly $10 million paid to a consulting firm owned by Certus’ top officers; $146,000 for three months of work by an executive’s son fresh out of college; $2.5 million for three executive apartments and high-end upgrades; $347,000 for private plane trips; $131,000 for Carolina Panthers games; several hundred thousand dollars for sponsorships and charitable gifts; and more than $500,000 for American Express bills.’  CertusBank now with $1.7 billion in assets was formed by the plaintiffs, Jones, Davis and Webb in 2010 using capital from a small group of private equity investors. Their strategy was to purchase failed banks in the southeast.”

Compare that to a permanent unemployment rate of 40 percent for black teenagers in the United States, who are locked out of the labor market by the federal government’s minimum-wage laws.  America is mired in a debate over how much the minimum wage should be raised. That’s the wrong debate. The debate should be over whether the minimum wage should be abolished entirely. And it should be! Perhaps the Swiss defeat of a national minimum wage for their country will shed some light on the direction the United States should take.”

Widespread abandonment of farming changes Italy’s landscape

“Centuries after it was colonised by Vandals and Visigoths, Italy is being invaded again – this time by trees.  A report released yesterday revealed that the widespread abandonment of farmland, particularly in mountainous areas in the south of the country, has led re-afforestation on a massive scale.  Italy now has more forest and woodland than it has had in modern times – 35 per cent of the country is covered in trees. The south of Italy is also now increasingly wooded.  It is there that the decline in upland farming has been most pronounced, after small-scale farmers gave up their hard-scrabble properties and moved to towns and cities, or left Italy altogether.”

Get used to driving at 40mph, says top UK highways official

“Motorists must get used to driving at 40mph on the motorway, the civil servant in charge of Britain’s roads has said as he admitted the roads will get ‘slower and slower’.  Labour said the admission was evidence that a decision to cut infrastructure spending in the early years of the Coalition meant that officials now had to manage congestion rather than invest in new roads.  The Agency is in charge of maintaining 4,300 miles of England’s motorways and A roads. Four million vehicles use the roads daily.  Mr Dalton blamed Treasury spending rules for meaning that he lost £20million from his roads spending budget due to the very wet weather in January and February.”

French rail company orders 2,000 trains too wide for platforms

“France’s national rail company SNCF said on Tuesday it had ordered 2,000 trains for an expanded regional network that are too wide for many station platforms, entailing costly repairs.  A spokesman for the RFF national rail operator confirmed the error, first reported by satirical weekly Canard Enchaine in its Wednesday edition.  ‘We discovered the problem a bit late, we recognize that and we accept responsibility on that score,’ Christophe Piednoel told France Info radio.  The RFF only gave the dimensions of platforms built less than 30 years ago, but most of France’s 1,200 platforms were built more than 50 years ago. Repair work has already cost 80 million euros ($110 million).”
