Are Organic Food Retailers Cheap Now?

“Competition is the strongest factor in the selloff of organic food retailers. All of the organic food retailers have store targets well above their current store count.  Organic food retailers alone have targeted total store counts of 2,800 from a current store count of 399, representing a sevenfold increase.  In addition to competition from pure organic food retailers, traditional food retailers are seeing the growth in the organic growth segment as a way to boost growth in same store sale growth.  The increased competitive pressures are the key drivers of the weakness in the first and second quarter of 2014.”

South Africa Families Queue for Food as Strike Continues

“Thousands of people have received food-aid parcels in South Africa’s platinum belt, where a strike has crippled output at mines owned by the three biggest producers for almost 18 weeks and left many starving.  About 12,000 people have benefited from packs of corn, rice, beans and bread distributed in the Rustenburg area, where many of the nation’s platinum mines are located.  Employees don’t get paid when on strike in South Africa, which produces about 70 percent of mined platinum. The workers have forfeited 8.5 billion rand ($818 million) in wages, while the companies have lost 19 billion rand in revenue, the producers said on a joint website.”

India easing gold import restrictions: Curb your enthusiasm

“Last week gold was boosted by news that the Reserve Bank of India is relaxing the much-maligned 80-20 import-export measure.  Hopes that the measure could be fully phased out by October, ahead of the Diwali festival in October and the crucial gold-buying wedding season, has already seen the rupee price of gold drop to nine-month lows.  Last month Rajesh Khosla, managing director of the country’s biggest refiner which is expanding capacity to 200 tonnes of gold per year, predicted the relaxation of the 80-20 rule, but added that ‘while the form of restrictions may change, the government will continue to restrain buying.'”

Rent or buy? The math is changing

“The potentially overvalued markets are the result of three forces. They are taking place in local economies that suffered only minimally during the recession that began in 2008 and have experienced strong job growth since then.  They are fueled further by the low-interest rate policies that are aimed at bolstering the overall national economy but don’t discriminate based on geography. Even as San Francisco’s housing market is at risk of overheating, buyers there get the same ultralow mortgage rates engineered by the Federal Reserve as home buyers in depressed Detroit or Cleveland do. And the new booms are taking place in markets where restrictions on building hinder developers.”

Marc Faber: ‘This is not a very healthy market’

“‘I don’t regard this as a very healthy market,’ Faber told CNBC from Singapore. ‘The U.S. market is in a very dicey position where it could easily drop 10, 20 percent.’ He pointed out that many stocks are already down 10 to 20 percent, such as momentum stocks which include high-flying technology and biotech shares.  He said he did not feel comfortable putting all his money into equities at the present time and owning 10-year Treasury notes gave him some security. As money moves out of risky assets, Treasurys could benefit, he argued.  Equity markets were ‘relatively expensive’, he said, although Europe and emerging markets represented better value.

Dream of U.S. energy independence was just revised away

“The U.S. shale oil ‘miracle’ took a major hit Wednesday, when the federal government announced a hefty downward revision of its estimate of the amount of recoverable oil in the No. 1 shale reserve in the U.S.: the Monterey formation in California.  A recently as this week, the much-publicized Monterey formation accounted for nearly two-thirds of all technically recoverable U.S. shale oil resources, standing at a world-class 13.7 billion barrels. But on Wednesday, that estimate was downgraded to a mere 600 million barrels, or 96% lower than the day before.  This takes the Monterey from one of the world’s largest potential fields to supplying the U.S.’s oil needs for a mere 33 days.”

Cocaine Sales, Prostitution Will Now Be Counted Into Italy’s GDP

Italy will include prostitution and illegal drug sales in the gross domestic product calculation this year, a boost for its chronically stagnant economy and Prime Minister Matteo Renzi’s effort to meet deficit targets.  Drugs, prostitution and smuggling will be part of GDP as of 2014 and prior-year figures will be adjusted to reflect the change in methodology, the Istat national statistics office said today. The revision was made to comply with European Union rules, it said.  Renzi, 39, is committed to narrowing Italy’s deficit to 2.6 percent of GDP this year, a task that’s easier if output is boosted by portions of the underground economy that previously went uncounted.”

NSA Records All Cell Phone Calls in the Bahamas

“If you’ve been to the Bahamas recently, the National Security Agency (NSA) knows who you called and what you said while you were there. If you called some guy whose number a friend of a friend provided for you to score some weed while on the island to help you relax, because you’re one of those people who actually gets even more wound up while on vacation, the NSA knows that, too. The latest big revelation from Edward Snowden’s files is that the NSA has the ability to record and store the content (not just the metadata) of all cell phone conversations in the Bahamas and at least one other country. The Bahamas: A hotbed of terrorism activity?”
