Paramilitary Tactics Learned Abroad, Used at Home

“One young mother is blinded by a spotlight while she nurses her tiny infant. Two of the men rifle though the family’s personal possessions while two others guard the entrance to the home. This is the third invasion of their home in the past two months. Almost every night, the paramilitaries drive by their yard, spotlighting their windows and watching them from the roadside.  Another member of the same community recalls being followed for miles by a low-flying Blackhawk helicopter with machine-gunners hanging out of the open helicopter doors. She’s also been pulled over, pepper-sprayed, beaten with batons and interrogated about her grocery shopping.  Is this some godforsaken third-world hellhole?”

New Mexico court forces employer to pay for medical marijuana

“An injured mechanic who uses medical marijuana as pain treatment can have his former employer and the company’s insurer reimburse him for the drug, a New Mexico appeals court ruled.  The state’s Court of Appeals voted unanimously on Monday to uphold a previous workers compensation court decision that also ruled in favor of the 55-year-old former mechanic, who suffered a lower back injury in 2000, according to court papers.  The Santa Fe mechanic’s former employer, Ben’s Automotive Services, and its insurer, Redwood Fire & Casualty, had objected to reimbursing the man for using medical marijuana as treatment, citing the drug’s illegality under federal law.”

Inside Oklahoma’s Quest To Dominate The American Drone Industry

“Oklahoma businesspeople, academics, and politicians are collaborating through an organization named USA-OK, which aims to make the heartland state the focal point of American UAV development. A quasi-affiliated group, the Governor’s Unmanned Aerial Systems Council (PDF), was formed via an executive order from Governor Mary Fallin in 2011. Both organizations are lobbying for commercial drone test sites in Oklahoma and increased government assistance in luring more large military contractors to the state.  15 companies already operating within the state fulfill duties as diverse as assembling payloads for military drones and creating low-cost retail UAVs for the hobbyist market.”

Tech Backers See Colo. as ‘Silicon Valley of Weed’

“Tom Bollich sees similarities between the marijuana business and the tech sector in which he saw extraordinary success.  Bollich, co-founder of Zynga Inc., the San Francisco-based online gaming company that developed FarmVille, has entered Colorado’s fledging legal marijuana industry as chief executive of Surna Inc. in Boulder. With plans to acquire additional cannabis technology platforms in the future through Surna, which he founded in August, Bollich knows he came to the right place.  ‘This is the Silicon Valley of weed,’ he said.  Surna’s first acquisition is Boulder-based Hydro Innovations, which makes cooling equipment for indoor marijuana cultivation facilities.”

The US Imperium, Coming Dollar Difficulties and Investing Abroad

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“I like gold, foreign securities, unique startup situations and IPOs and even mining stocks, although I’m not convinced mining shares will do well because there are now so many other precious metal alternatives. As I said earlier, I believe big money will likely be made by early investors into the exciting new cannabis startups and IPOs. But diversify any investment in this area among a number of companies because many will fail and only a few will do well. Once again, although there are real medical benefits from cannabis use, the government policy change is primarily because they need the revenue at all levels of government.”

U.S. air base in pro-Moscow Kyrgyzstan will be abandoned

“A U.S. Air Force base in Kyrgyzstan is packing up for closure after more than 12 years of flying troops and cargo in and out of Afghanistan, as Moscow boosts its military clout in the strategic region.  The Manas Transit Center in the ex-Soviet nation’s main civilian airport has been in operation since the end of 2001, serving the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan codenamed Operation Enduring Freedom.  As Kyrgyzstan seeks closer political ties and economic aid from its ex-Soviet overlord Russia, the national parliament last June gave Washington until July 2014 to close its base.”

Russia And China Sign Historic $400 Billion “Holy Grail” Gas Deal

logo3

“Russia’s Gazprom and China’s CNPC announced, that after a decade of negotiations, the two nations signed a 30 year gas contract amounting to around $400 billion. And with the west doing all it can to alienate Russia and to force it into China’s embrace, this is merely the beginning of what will be a far closer commercial (and political) relationship between China and Russia.  So far there have been no public pricing details on the deal which accrording to Gazprom CEO Aleksey Miller is a ‘commercial secret’, and which is believed to involve Russia supplying 38 billion cubic metres of gas per year to China via a new eastern pipeline linking the countries.”

China reverts to credit as property slump threatens economy

“New housing starts fell by 15pc in April from a year earlier, with effects rippling through the steel and cement industries. Land sales fell by 20pc, eating into government income.
The Chinese central bank has ordered 15 commercial banks to boost loans to first-time buyers and ‘expedite the approval and disbursement of mortgage loans’, the latest sign that it is backing away from monetary tightening. The authorities are now in an analogous position to Western central banks following years of stimulus: reliant on an asset boom to keep growth going. Each attempt to rein in China’s $25 trillion credit bubble seems to trigger wider tremors, and soon has to be reversed.”

Apartment starts surge; new home permits down 3% in 2014

“Builders ramped up construction in April, but they were mostly building multifamily apartment buildings. A monthly report from the U.S. Census Bureau showed total housing starts up 13 percent month to month, but that was driven by a 43 percent monthly jump in buildings with five or more units. Single-family housing starts rose just under 1 percent for the month.  Building permits, which are a better gauge of future construction activity, bode poorly for single-family homes. Those permits are down more than 3 percent from a year ago. This shows builders do not expect demand for single-family homes to strengthen any time soon.”

Australian Train Drivers, Paid Like U.S. Surgeons, Replaced With Robots

“Train drivers employed by Rio Tinto Group to haul iron ore across Australia’s outback make about the same money as surgeons in the U.S. It’s little wonder the mining company will replace them with robot locomotives.  The 400-plus workers in the remote Pilbara region who earn about A$240,000 ($224,000) a year probably are the highest-paid train drivers in the world, according to U.K.-based transport historian Christian Wolmar. Australia’s decade-long mining boom has sucked up skilled workers, raising wages for engineers to drivers at Rio, the second-largest exporter of the mineral, and its closest competitors, Vale SA (VALE) and BHP Billiton Ltd.”
