Iraq: A Total Rout of Neoconservatism

“The neoconservatives can run, but they can’t hide. Their policies have come home to roost.  So far, it’s a cakewalk for radical Islam, which had no foothold in Saddam Hussein’s Iraq.  The Pentagon built the American military base in Baghdad. It is called the Victory Base Complex. Maybe the militants will keep this name, out of spite. Baghdad is about to fall to the militants.   Here comes Islamic Sharia law. There was no Sharia law under Saddam Hussein.  Here comes Al Qaeda. There was no Al Qaeda in Iraq under Saddam Hussein.  Here comes the question of question:  Vets in Congress: ‘What was point of all that?’…  Ron Paul answered this question in October 2002.”

The jihadist behind the takeover of Mosul – and how America let him go

“Why such a ferocious individual was deemed fit for release in 2009 is not known. One possible explanation is that he was one of thousands of suspected insurgents granted amnesty as the US began its draw down in Iraq. Another, though, is that rather like Keyser Söze, the enigmatic crimelord in the film The Usual Suspects, he may actually be several different people.  ‘We either arrested or killed a man of that name about half a dozen times, he is like a wraith who keeps reappearing, and I am not sure where fact and fiction meet,’ said Lieutenant-General Sir Graeme Lamb, a former British special forces commander who helped US efforts against al-Qaeda in Iraq.”

ISIS boast of slaughtering 1,700 Iraqi soldiers in ongoing rampage

“As they surged towards the capital, one faction from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant staged a jubilant parade of American Humvee patrol cars seized from the collapsing Iraqi army complete with a flypast in captured former U.S. helicopters.  In a sign of increasing concern, President Barack Obama abruptly changed course on Iraq last night, saying that he wouldn’t ‘rule out anything’ as he searches for ways to help the ailing Iraqi army push back the terrorist horde.  In a video released last night, masked ISIS fighters waved the black flag of the Islamic State and flashed the ‘V’ sign while some shouted ‘towards Baghdad!’ as they paraded in stolen Humvees.”

Iran and US join fight against Sunni jihadis of Isis

“The United States and Iran are moving rapidly to defend Iraq from rampaging Sunni Islamist insurgents, with Washington urgently considering air strikes on the jihadi militants and Tehran dispatching its foremost powerbroker to help arrange the defence of Baghdad.  Senior US officials told the Guardian that an air campaign was under serious discussion, possibly targeting fighters not just in Iraq but in Syria, where they have seized swaths of territory in the past two years. President Barack Obama said that decisions would be taken in the ‘days ahead’.  The president [..] signalled a new, reluctant openness to returning the US to war in Iraq.”

Iraq falling? Now what?

“They are — or were — Al-Qaeda. In fact, they’re so radically extreme, so vicious, so uncontrollable, even Al-Qaeda itself has cut off all ties.  If this group — the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) — were just a typical terrorist organization, operating in small splinter cells, planning random attacks on isolated targets, we’d know how to deal with that as well. But that’s not who they are. They’re an army. They’re sweeping Iraq in a blistering blitzkrieg. They’re snowballing in size, gathering thousands of Iraqi army defectors and militants into their fold. They’re taking over government army bases, arms depots, refineries, power stations, big cities, even entire provinces.”

No Containment in U.S. Health Costs

“One potential cause for the spike in health care spending was the influx of insured patients due to the rollout of health care exchanges under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Of those who enrolled through the exchanges, 6.7 million were eligible for Medicaid coverage. Many of them would be receiving care through managed Medicaid programs, which are typically operated by private insurers under contract through the states. That could create a significant spike in spending since most of the insurers operating those plans are paid per patient, per month, regardless of whether or not the patient is actually seen by a health care provider.”

Bond Investors Partying Like It’s … 1746?

“In the wake of the European Central Bank’s latest policy gambit, yields on the benchmark French 10-year government bond just fell to 1.65 percent.  That is the lowest level since 1746, according to new research from Deutsche Bank.  In Italy, 10-year government bond yields just sank to 2.76 percent — the lowest level since early 1945. Except for that one brief period, yields are the lowest since at least 1808.  And Spain? The country that almost went broke a couple years ago … that still faces record-high unemployment and incredibly anemic growth … and that is still mired in a housing slump that mirrored the one we suffered here?  Its benchmark 10-year yield just sank to 2.6 percent.”

Revealed: The world’s cheapest stock markets

“To be named ‘cheap’, markets had to be trading below their own historic valuation across all three measures. As the map to the left shows, only a handful of stock markets managed to achieve this feat – Greece, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Russia and Turkey.  In red are the countries that scored badly on all three metrics. America, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Indonesia are all trading on valuations that are higher than their historic averages across each of the measures. Investors are buying high.  The main reason for the lofty valuations is that these stock markets have performed well in recent years. This pulled in other investors and has left these markets substantially overpriced.”

An Ever Deeper EU to Join the Wall Street Party?

Anthony-Wile1

“The central bankers have reason to inflate. The European experiment is precarious and economies around the world are teetering. Part of Mr. Andors’s speech, no doubt, has to do with creating the possibility, rhetorically at least, that the EU, too, can join in the mass inflation building around the world. This no doubt seems the only way out for those who have engineered the current economic cul de sac. They will print and print until the danger is past and stock markets have traveled through the roof. Wealth is to be destroyed and pensioners bankrupted, but the system itself is to be perpetuated and expanded. It continues to be a cynical exercise in creating haves and have-nots.”

Bill Bonner: The Japanese Will Learn to Tango

Bill-Bonner2

“For nearly a quarter century, Japan’s diligent savers have funded its government deficits. Now, the savers are retiring. They need their money back. At the same time, Japan’s trade surplus is disappearing. Where will the money come to keep the lights on?  Nowhere. Already, there are days when scarcely a single buyer steps up to buy Japanese bonds. The central bank of Japan takes up the slack. And as people get older (spending their savings rather than adding to them) and as the country’s current account surplus disappears (Japan is not the export powerhouse it once was), more slack appears.  The Bank of Japan will come to the rescue, of course.”
