“A Counter-Strike player found himself having to deal with more than just digital bomb recently, thanks to a prankster that called the police on his house—a practice commonly known as ‘swatting.’  The player in question is Jordan Gilbert of n0thingtv. While the clip above shows the most relevant bit, you can see the lead-up and aftermath of the raid in the actual Twitch stream around the 1:44:00 mark.  Don’t worry, nothing bad happened to Gilbert—he returns to his seat around the 1:56:00 mark on the Twitch stream. ‘It’s all good,’ he reassured his viewers. ‘Got a good understanding with the police station now.'”

ABC tells viewers that scenes of destruction in Gaza are in Israel

“In one stark example, ABC News’ Diane Sawyer misidentifies scenes of the aftermath of Israeli missile strikes in Gaza as destruction caused by Palestinian rocket fire.  As Sawyer segues into the segment, she says, ‘We take you overseas now to the rockets raining down on Israel today as Israel tried to shoot them out of the sky.’ Next to her is video footage not of Israelis or even Israel, but of Israeli airstrikes on Gaza.  Sawyer then incorrectly describes an image of a Palestinian family gathering belongings in the smoking debris of a missile-hit home in Gaza as ‘an Israeli family trying to salvage what they can.'”

NBC Removes Reporter from Gaza After 4 Children Shelled To Death

“Foreign Correspondent for NBC News, Ayman Mohyeldin, witnessed the murder of four Palestinian boys via Israeli airstrike on Wednesday. After providing a firsthand account for NBC, he was contacted by the network’s executives, and was told to leave Gaza immediately.  NBC insisted that their decision to remove Mohyeldin from the region was due to ‘security concerns.’ However, according to Journalist Glenn Greenwald, they quickly proceeded to replace Mohyeldin, who is an Arabic-speaking, Egyptian-American with experience reporting in the region, with Richard Engel and an American producer who has never been to Gaza and speaks no Arabic.”

Snowden: NSA employees pass around intercepted nude photos

“Edward Snowden has revealed that he witnessed ‘numerous instances’ of National Security Agency (NSA) employees passing around nude photos that were intercepted ‘in the course of their daily work.’  If Snowden’s allegations of sexual photo distribution are true, they would be consistent with what the NSA has already reported. In September 2013, in a letter from the NSA’s Inspector General Dr. George Ellard to Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), the agency outlined a handful of instances during which NSA agents admitted that they had spied on their former love interests. This even spawned a nickname within the agency, LOVEINT—a riff on HUMINT (human intelligence).”

AK-47s become hot commodity after U.S. sanctions

“Here’s a surprising effect of the latest U.S. sanctions against Russia: a run on AK-47s.  Among the companies sanctioned this week was Kalashnikov Concern, the maker of the gun. The Obama administration issued sanctions against Russian companies in response to Russia’s role in a separatist movement in Ukraine. According to the Treasury Department, Kalashnikov Concern is banned from importing its guns — including the AK-47 and more advanced AK-74 — into the United States. But, in a statement posted on its Web site, Treasury said Americans are allowed to own, buy and sell the guns, so long as they were already in the U.S. prior to the sanctions.”

IRS Needs AR-15′s For “Standoff Capabilities”? [2013]

“The IRS, which primarily acts as an audit agency, refuses to answer why its agents need AR-15s for ‘standoff capability.’  Congressman Jeff Duncan (R-SC) wanted to know why IRS agents were buying ammo in large quantities and wanted to see the ammo supply himself.  He went to the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Maryland where he witnessed 8 or 9 IRS agents using AR-15s at an indoor 100 yard firing range.  Agencies like the Department of Education, the Social Security Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the IRS continue to purchase large amounts of tactical weapons and ammunition to build up their law enforcement divisions.”

FCC regulates Internet, but can’t build a website with $450m budget

“FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler says budget constraints have forced his agency ‘to operate with an IT infrastructure that would be unacceptable to any well-managed business.’ This is why the FCC website has crashed multiple times when inundated by people trying to submit comments on the commission’s network neutrality plan, Wheeler says.  The comments website relies on a backend system created in 1996. To handle the influx of comments, the FCC extended the deadline and set up an e-mail address that could accept comments into the official record.  And it could get worse, as Congress is fighting over whether to cut the FCC’s budget or approve a requested funding increase.”

“Hanging out with Lois Lerner can be bad for your hard drive’s health.Mrs. Lerner, at the center of an Internal Revenue Service political scandal that sounds ever more jaily, lost her emails in a fortuitous electro-mechanical failure. Now we learn that April J. Sands, a onetime acolyte of Mrs. Lerner at the FEC, got into a political scandal of her own, and her hard drive went bust at just the right time, too.  Life in Washington is full of coincidences.  The administration’s defenders give the benefit of the doubt to the IRS and the Federal Election Commission. But is that appropriate? Sitting across the table from an IRS auditor, the taxpayer rarely gets the benefit of a doubt, and never of a coincidence.”
