Hapifork ‘smart fork’ review: eat slower to eat better

“A 2010 study published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that people who were given identical meals released more hormones that made them feel full when they ate the meal in 30 minutes rather than five. The Hapifork, the surprise darling of CES 2013, promises a quick and intelligent way to help you eat more slowly. (It also says it will help you ‘eat healthier,’ ‘lose weight,’ and ‘cut calories.’) The fork passively monitors how fast you eat, vibrating and lighting up to let you know when you take too many bites too quickly. It claims to be the answer to all your bad eating habits, with one simple tweak.”

NHS introduces £1,500 talking plate which warns fat families [2011]

“Doctors have a new weapon in the battle to beat obesity – a talking plate that tells people not to bolt their food.  The Mandometer monitors the amount of food leaving the plate and tells users who gobble: ‘Please eat more slowly.’  Now the £1,500 Swedish device is to be used in an NHS initiative to help hundreds of obese families lose weight.  Professor Julian Hamilton-Shield, who is leading the initiative, said obese children and adolescents using the Mandometer ate from 12 to 15 per cent less per meal at the end of the 12-month trial.   Six months after they stopped using the device they still ate less and continued to lose weight.”

How many bites do YOU take per day? New device helps you keep track

Dieters already track calories and steps, and now researchers have developed a device that they can wear on their wrists to count the number of bites they take of their food. Researchers at South Carolina’s Clemson University say that The Bite Monitor measures subtle wrist motions to detect bites with what they claim is 90per cent accuracy – and helps users get to the ‘optimum’ 100.  ‘It’s a little bit like a pedometer for your mouth,’ Eric Muth, a psychology professor who created the device with computer-engineering professor Adam Hoover, told The Wall Street Journal.   The concept will soon be tested in a study funded by the National Institutes of Health.”

Vessyl is the smart cup that knows exactly what you’re drinking

“Vessyl can tell the difference between strong and weak coffee, Lee says, noting caffeine disparities. It can even measure the sugar, protein, calories, fat, and caffeine inside any beverage you pour into it, mass-produced or homemade. As you go about your day, the device tracks how much you’re drinking, and when you tilt Vessyl to its back, it displays a bright blue line that rises and falls to indicate your hydration level.  Even sleek apps like Up Coffee, which tracks your caffeine consumption, require you to input your consumption manually drink by drink. The big idea behind Vessyl is to provide transparency, automatically, about how terrible most of our drinking habits are.”

Why your boss wants you to see online doctors

“Eighteen percent of large employers now offer telemedicine as part of their coverage, up from 15 percent in 2012, according to benefits firm Mercer, a division of Marsh & McLennan.  WellPoint sees room for much more growth, which is why the insurer partnered with Boston health IT firm American Well to launch LiveHealth this year for employer group plans.  The insurer plans to make an even bigger bet on the technology with a LiveHealth virtual worksite clinic—a private booth with tools to measure pulse and blood pressure, and even a camera that allows a doctor to look at a patient’s skin problem in real time—all at a fraction of the cost of having a doctor or nurse physically on site.”

Dr. Phil’s Doctor On Demand Raises $21M As Telemedicine Heats Up

“Doctor On Demand, a start-up that facilitates quick video consultations with physicians closed a $21 million Series A round led by Venrock. Consumers can access in under three minutes a physician from a smartphone or a desktop.  Founded only eight months ago, Doctor On Demand has gained rapid visibility thanks to its founders, television personality Dr. Phil and his son Jay McGraw who produces The Doctors, a health talk show where viewers can submit questions to a small stable of doctors.   A TV promotion caught the eye of British mogul Richard Branson while on a trip to the U.S.  He joins Venrock and Shasta Ventures in this round.”

The Most Fascinating Profile Ever About a Guy and His Boring Startup

“Stewart (Butterfield) is well known in certain circles as the founder of the ur-photo-sharing service, Flickr. When he and his two partners sold it to Yahoo for, Stewart says, ‘somewhere between $22 million and $25 million’ in 2004, it kicked off the Web 2.0 era and signaled the end of the dotcom bust. Flickr was a treasure chest of innovation, but Stewart never even intended to make the damn thing. He’d set out, instead, to make a game called Game Neverending. It was a financial failure. Flickr was merely based on a set of features broken out of the game, but it took over the company and his life. This was one of the original pivots. Everybody does it now.  History has circled back on Stewart.”

How to Use Your Cat to Hack Your Neighbor’s Wi-Fi

“Late last month, a Siamese cat named Coco went wandering in his suburban Washington, DC neighborhood. He spent three hours exploring nearby backyards. While he was out, Coco mapped dozens of his neighbors’ Wi-Fi networks, identifying four routers that used an old, easily-broken form of encryption and another four that were left entirely unprotected.  In the 1980s, hackers used a technique called ‘wardialing,’ cycling through numbers with their modems to find unprotected computers far across the internet.  The next logical step: The ‘WarKitteh’ collar, a device built for less than $100 that turns any outdoor cat into a Wifi-sniffing hacker accomplice.”

Apple Allows the World’s Most Popular Bitcoin Wallet Back Into Its Store

“It looks like Apple has finally changed its stance on bitcoin.  Six months after Apple removed Blockchain from its online App Store—effectively preventing people from using the popular bitcoin wallet app on the iPhone and the iPad—the tech giant has now allowed the app back into the store. ‘This seems to be the first strong and real sign they are ready to accommodate future digital currency development,’ the makers of Blockchain said a statement, referring to Apple. ‘It goes a long way to legitimizing bitcoin and now provides hundreds of millions of iOS users access to bitcoin applications.’  Blockchain CEO Nicolas Cary thinks Apple’s new attitude comes down to one thing: Android.”

Mike Hearn Wins $40K Bounty for Bitcoin Core Crowdfunding Platform

“BitcoinJ developer and former Google engineer Mike Hearn, creator of the decentralized crowdfunding platform Lighthouse, has been awarded the majority of a $100,000 bounty. The bounty was offered by self-proclaimed bitcoin millionaire and entrepreneur Olivier Janssens, who in a post on the bitcoin subreddit from June called for a platform to facilitate funding for critical bitcoin projects. In his original statement, Janssens argued that the Bitcoin Foundation was failing to adequately fund bitcoin core development. Because of this, he stated, the bounty winner’s project should serve as a replacement for the Foundation itself.”
