Warplanes hit Tripoli amid Libya fighting

“Air strikes targeted a militia in Tripoli as rival armed groups from Misrata and Zintan battled for supremacy in Libya amid a worsening bout of violence.  None of the militias had been thought to own warplanes, while the central government has only an outdated air force.   The air attacks escalate a struggle between Islamist and more moderate forces as well as between militias from different cities all vying for power.  Forces from Zintan had allied themselves with Haftar and stormed parliament in May, saying it had an Islamist agenda.  Some Tripoli residents, tired of daily fighting disrupting power and food supplies, hope NATO will intervene in Libya.”

Government Bribery and The War on Terror Militarized America’s Police

“Billions in taxpayer funds have been spent to transform American police forces into clones of the U.S. occupation forces of Iraq and Afghanistan. The 1033 Program and related facilities represent massive profits for U.S. defense contractors. As our Middle Eastern wars wind down, they’ve created a $30 billion-a-year domestic market for their MRAP armored troop carriers, night-vision rifle scopes, camouflage fatigues, Humvees and M16 automatic rifles, amongst other things. This isn’t just cast-off surplus stuff, either. The Pentagon’s Defense Logistics Agency often simply purchases gear from a defense contractor and transfers it to a local law enforcement agency free of charge.”

4.5 million electronic health records from 20 hospitals compromised

Community Health Systems Inc. announced Monday that 4.5 million patients’ non-medical records have been compromised in a cyber attack that occurred over April and June.  Community Health Systems and the cyber security firm Mandiant believe the attacker was an ‘Advanced Persistent Threat’ group originating from China that was able to bypass security measures and successfully copy and transfer data using sophisticated malware and technology.  The data that was compromised includes patient names, addresses, birth dates, telephone numbers, and Social Security numbers. The company has said it would offer identity-theft protection services for those affected.”

When the highway robber wears a badge

“The victim that September day in 2013 wasn’t a bank. It was Tan Nguyen, a California man traveling on Interstate 80 near Winnemucca, about 165 miles northeast of Reno. He was pulled over by a Humboldt County sheriff’s deputy for doing 78 mph in a 75 zone. The deputy thought Mr. Nguyen ‘looked nervous’ and insisted on searching the vehicle, eventually finding a briefcase that contained $50,000 in cash.  So he took it.  Mr. Nguyen was never charged with any crime. Nothing illegal was found in the vehicle. Mr. Nguyen didn’t even receive a speeding ticket.  The following day, the sheriff’s office issued a news release trumpeting the windfall.”

U.S. traveler finds feds kept a 76-page file on him, including credit cards

“The 76 new pages of data, covering 2005 through 2013, show that CBP retains massive amounts of data on us when we travel internationally. My own PNRs include not just every mailing address, e-mail, and phone number I’ve ever used; some of them also contain:  The IP address that I used to buy the ticket; My credit card number (in full); The language I used; Notes on my phone calls to airlines, even for something as minor as a seat change.  The breadth of long-term data retention illustrates yet another way that the federal government enforces its post-September 11 ‘collect it all’ mentality.”

Ten percent of Venezuelans are taking steps for emigrating

“The figure exceeds the numbers pertaining to the highest peaks of emigration from Venezuela in the last decade: after the coup of 2002 and after the presidential recall referendum in 2004.  The president of Datanálisis argues that in this continent the poorest strata of the population are often the natural emigrants (for economic reasons rather than political reasons). In Venezuela, however, most people aiming to live in other countries belong to the highest strata of the population.  Datanálisis’ latest survey determined the common profile of Venezuelan emigrants: they are young people (aged 18-35), professionals or equity holders whose contribution to the country GDP is high.”

Venezuelan VP: Anyone rejecting border closure deserves no trust

“Venezuelan Vice-President Jorge Arreaza on Tuesday asserted that anyone lambasting the government’s security measures on the Venezuela-Colombia border should be distrusted, claiming that critics may be interested in leaving the problem unsolved. ‘Those criticizing the measures are directly interested either in the smuggling mafias or destabilization…’ said Arreaza during a conference on comprehensive defense of the nation.  The senior officer further attributed domestic shortage to smuggling.”

Monaco $400 Million Penthouse Secrecy Booms

“Monaco, the tax haven on the French Riviera, is experiencing a luxury-housing boom that includes the world’s most expensive penthouse as developers prepare for an influx of millionaires and billionaires escaping higher taxes or a loss of banking privacy.  New levies on luxury homes in London and a U.S.-led global crackdown on hiding assets will also probably attract the affluent to Monaco, which already counts pop stars, Formula One drivers and Russian billionaires among its inhabitants. One in three of Monaco’s 38,000 residents are millionaires, according to a study. As that number increases, home values will rise by about a fifth by June 2015, according to London-based Savills.”

UK government ‘mansion tax’ proposal will include property over £2m

Labour is refining its plans for a mansion tax, saying, in common with the Liberal Democrats, that it would introduce new tax bands on properties above £2m.  But the shadow chancellor, Ed Balls, also promised there would be concessions to ensure the tax does not hit those who are asset-rich but cash-poor.  It is likely Labour will propose two lower bands, one between £2m and £5m, and another between £5m and £10m.  The reassurance from Balls may be designed to soothe the fears of Londoners who are seeing house prices rising much faster than ever imagined, widening the net of people likely to be affected.”

H.K. Politician’s Son-In-Law Won’t Face Charges For TSA Impersonation

“When high-powered finance guy Eric Slighton was arrested at SFO after allegedly impersonating a TSA agent and luring women into ‘private screenings,’officials hoped the women he pulled aside would come forward so he could face charges stronger than the public drunkenness and ‘suspicious occurrence’ ones they initially slapped him with. A month later, however, the women have not come forward, and Slighton, who has connections at the very top of Hong Kong’s government, will not be charged.  Reports at the time say that he had entered the security area in khaki pants, a blue polo shirt and blue rubber gloves that officers suspected he swiped ‘to look the part.'”
