Granny’s Gold Bars Are Key to Vietnam Push to Boost Dong [2013]

“The target of Vietnam’s campaign to stabilize its currency is in the locked bedroom wardrobe of retired civil servant Vu Thi Huong: gold bars.  Huong is among millions of Vietnamese who hold an estimated 300 tons to 400 tons of bullion to store their wealth — a legacy of more than a century of war, revolution and economic turbulence. The central bank wants to convert the hoard, much of it smuggled in, into dong deposits to strengthen the currency, which has slid 21 percent against the dollar in five years. To reduce contraband and persuade people to sell their bullion, the central bank made itself the sole importer and Saigon Jewelry Co. the only legal producer of gold bars.”

Vietnam police force gold shop to close after USD exchange accusation

“A gold shop in Ho Chi Minh City will temporarily close following a police raid that has raised eyebrows among legal experts.  Police stormed into the shop on Bui Huu Nghia Street at 1 p.m. on Thursday (April 24) claiming they had seen a man trying to exchange a US$100 note for Vietnamese dong.  The police then spent eight hours combing the shop from top to bottom, seizing more than US$14,000 in cash and equipment, including a security camera and a CPU.  Before leaving, the officers sealed off 559 taels of gold on display in the shop.  Police later removed evidentiary seals after Mai produced papers to prove she inherited the gold from her parents.”

Dominica Will Be First Nation with Universal Bitcoin Possession

“For the first time in history, an entire national population will have the cryptocurrency bitcoin in their hands for use: the people of Dominica, an island republic in the middle of the Caribbean. An event to mark the occasion will be held in March 2015, thanks to the goodwill of local authorities and a collaborative initiative from Coinapult, Aspen Assurance, Bitcoin Beauties, and the College Cryptocurrency Network (CCN).  The initiative, known as ‘Let the Bit Drop,’ will send a small of amount of bitcoin to every island resident via text message. This effort will turn Dominica, and its more than 70,000 residents, into the most densely concentrated bitcoin community in the world.”

Easy permanent residence with Panama Friendly Nations visa

“Last year, the Panamanian government introduced its ‘Friendly Nations visa’, a permanent residence scheme for citizens of select ‘friendly’ countries.  Since its introduction, the government has added a total of 47 countries.  Qualifying for this visa is remarkably easy. Yes, there is still government paperwork and I’m told it could take up to nine months to process.  However, the barrier to entry is unbelievably low. You simply need to deposit $5,000 in a Panamanian bank account (plus $2,000 for each additional dependent, if applicable) and demonstrate some tie of ‘economic activity’ to Panama in the form of starting or buying a business, owning real estate, or even getting a job.”

There is no one-size-fits-all solution.  Generally speaking for most people, though, the easiest, fastest, and least costly path to obtaining a citizenship in another country and a second passport is through a citizenship-by-ancestry program. Each country that has such a program has its own eligibility requirements and procedures.  Of course, you have to be lucky enough to have verifiable heritage in the select countries that offer such programs.  In fact, Italy’s citizenship-by-ancestry program is how I attained my second passport.”

I just haven’t made a decision as to exactly when. I have family here, I have a son, so it keeps me here even though I would prefer not to be. Pentagon, scientists closing in on rapid DNA technology

“Researchers are closing in on the final steps of a new system to analyze human DNA in 90 minutes instead of the two to three weeks it now takes, according to interviews with Pentagon and industry officials.  Rapid DNA can be used for a variety of applications, including immigration, human trafficking, war crimes and natural disasters. Military units could track the DNA of suspected terrorists or militants in places such as Afghanistan to gain a better understanding of the ‘biometrics’ of certain populations.  Most government policies governing the use of [the national DNA database] go back to 1994 and the DNA Identification Act. That law did not anticipate rapid analysis.”

Britain considers ban on bearer shares for G8 transparency [2013]

“Britain may ban stock certificates known as bearer shares that can be transferred without needing to register ownership, a government minister said, tapping into a drive for greater corporate transparency.  Other measures proposed on Monday by Business Secretary Vince Cable included plans to force nominee directors to reveal more about who benefits from company ownership and proposals to ban companies from acting as directors themselves. At the G8 summit, Britain said it wanted to create a registry of ‘beneficial ownership’ to help tax authorities track down those seeking to launder money or evade taxes by using complicated company structures.”
