Perfecting Tyranny: Foreign War as Experimentation in State Control

“Writing at the dawn of the twentieth century, Mark Twain provided ominous commentary about a hypothetical ‘Great Republic’ that had adopted a foreign policy of actively intervening in distant societies.  What if Twain’s scenario were not hypothetical, but rather real? What if foreign interventions abroad have the long-term effect of undermining liberties and freedoms at home? This paper explores how interventions abroad can affect domestic government activities in a way that reduces its citizens’ freedoms and liberties. Although our analysis is generalizable, we focus on a specific ‘Great Republic’—the United States—because of its global dominance in economic and military affairs.”

MRAPs And Bayonets: The Pentagon’s 1033 Program

“The 1033 program is the key source of the most visible, big-ticket, military item being sent to local law enforcement: mine-resistant, ambush-protected vehicles, or MRAPs. Designed to withstand bullets, grenades and roadside bombs on the front lines of war, more than 600 of them have been sent to local law enforcement agencies in almost every state in the U.S., mostly within the past year. Los Angeles County, for example, has nine of these vehicles, six of which were obtained just this past March.  But the program is a conduit for much more than just MRAPs. It turns out that weapons are a relatively small part of the 1033 program.”

NYPD cracks down on cyclists on weekend after deadly crash

“Police hit riders with 103 summonses during a weekend crackdown that was launched a day after Jill Tarlov was hit by a speed demon on a high-performance bike, according to NYPD stats.  Between Friday and Sunday, 29 riders were caught failing to yield to pedestrians, 26 blew red lights and 30 were ticketed for wearing headphones, according to the NYPD.  Officers wrote 42 of the tickets in a ‘targeted enforcement area’ along West Drive from West 60th to West 65th streets — the busy area where Tarlov was hit on Thursday.  Cops were already on a record ticketing pace in the park before the bike blitz. They wrote 468 total summonses between Jan. 1 and Sept. 14.”

Most Untrustworthy US Police Departments Receive Military Weapons

“A Pentagon program that distributes military surplus gear to local law enforcement allows even departments that the Justice Department has censured for civil rights violations to apply for and get lethal weaponry.  That lack of communication between two Cabinet agencies adds to questions about a program under review in the aftermath of the militarized police response to protesters in Ferguson, Missouri.  The Pentagon, which provides the free surplus military equipment, says its consultation with the Justice Department will be looked at as the government reviews how to prevent high-powered weaponry from flowing to the untrustworthy.”

Photo ID now needed to buy hair bleach under European anti-terror laws

“Peroxide blondes must now apply for photographic ID to buy the strongest hair bleach, under little-noticed new European anti-terror rules.  Model car buffs are also hit, as chemicals they use for fuel are controlled under the new scheme, run by the Home Office.  Anyone wishing to buy such materials must pay £40 for a three-year licence, or face two years’ jail. Shopkeepers can also be imprisoned if they do not check papers. Applicants will face a criminal record check and scrutiny of medical records for signs of mental health problems as well as questions about why they want the chemicals.”

Almost Half of Wealthy Chinese Want to Leave, Study Shows

“Nearly half of wealthy Chinese are planning to move to another country within the next five years, according to a new Barclays survey.  The survey, which questioned more than 2,000 high net-worth individuals with more than $1.5 million in total net worth, found that 47% of Chinese respondents said they want to move, compared with a global average of 29%.  Singaporeans were the second-most eager to flee home, with 23% planning to relocate in five years, followed by 20% for the U.K. and 16% for Hong Kong. Indian and American rich are the least likely to move, with only 5% and 6% of respondents saying they would relocate.”

Online Renegade, Wanted in U.S., Shakes Up New Zealand Election

“Mr. Dotcom, 40, is fighting extradition to the United States, where he is wanted on racketeering charges stemming from his file-sharing site Megaupload, now defunct.  While out on bail as he appeals the case, he has introduced a new company,Mega; confronted the prime minister in Parliament; released an album; and founded the Internet Party.  The party advocates decriminalizing marijuana, setting a national goal of 100 percent sustainable energy generation by 2025, repealing surveillance legislation, and amending copyright laws to protect Internet companies from ‘civil liability arising from the action of their users,’ a fix that could shield hosting services like Mega.”

Angry with Washington, 1 in 4 Americans open to secession

“Republicans were more inclined to support the idea, with 29.7 percent favoring it compared with 21 percent of Democrats.  By region, the idea was least popular in New England, the cradle of the Revolutionary War, with just 17.4 percent of respondents open to pulling their state out.  It was most popular in the Southwest, where 34.1 percent of respondents back the idea.  That region includes Texas, where an activist group is calling the state’s legislature to put the secession question on a statewide ballot. Anger with President Barack Obama’s handling of issues ranging from healthcare reform to the rise of Islamic State militants drives some of the feeling.”

Scotland votes to remain part of United Kingdom

“North Sea oil revenues, Britain’s nuclear weapons program and the use of the pound sterling would have all been on the line, along with dozens of other questions as the two sides divided this island along a border that has hardly functioned like one since 1707.  Scotland already has its own parliament, with responsibility for managing the nation’s health care, education and legal systems.  Nationalists said an independent Scotland, unshackled from London’s austerity-minded Conservative-led government, would have been modeled on Scandinavian countries that spread their wealth broadly and offer their citizens a generous package of government support.”

Scottish independence: big government and the five magic words

“The Scottish independence referendum has just concluded, and the first glance shows that the ‘No’ vote – that committed to remaining part of the United Kingdom – will pass by a few percentage points.  Ever since the Scottish Parliament decided to hold such an independence referendum five years ago, most of the world thought they were barking mad.  Few gave the movement much credibility until recent polls came out suggesting Scottish secession just might be a plausible reality.  In fact, results now show that a majority of those voting in the city of Glasgow indeed did vote for secession from London, a slap in the face to the centuries-old union between the two home countries.”
