Washington Parents Accused of Child Abuse For Using Marijuana

“Jesse and his wife Vicca Thompson, are from Sedro-Wolley, Washington, where marijuana use, including recreational, is now legal. The Thompsons are both medical marijuana users with doctor’s prescriptions. Jesse Thompson, a cancer survivor, takes it for pain, while Vicca Thompson, 43, uses it for arthritis and a nervous condition. They run their business, a medical marijuana dispensary and garden store called the Grow Shop, where they sell home-grown strains of marijuana as well as marijuana edibles, and are strong advocates of medical marijuana. In November 2014, authorities came for the Thompsons’ son Jerry.”

7 Homeschool Children Taken Away For Unapproved Supplement

Parents investigated for neglect after letting kids walk home alone

“It was a one-mile walk home from a Silver Spring park on Georgia Avenue on a Saturday afternoon. But what the parents saw as a moment of independence for their 10-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter, they say authorities viewed much differently.  Danielle and Alexander Meitiv say they are being investigated for neglect for the Dec. 20 trek — in a case they say reflects a clash of ideas about how safe the world is and whether parents are free to make their own choices about raising their children. She said her son and daughter have previously paired up for walks around the block, to a nearby 7-Eleven and to a library about three-quarters of a mile away.”

U.S. cops stock up on radars that can see through walls

“According to USA Today, at least 50 law enforcement agencies in the US, including the FBI and the US Marshals, have been stocking up on handheld radars for the past two years. The product they use is called Range-R (pictured above) manufactured by L-3 Communications, which is powerful enough to detect movement and even breathing within 50 feet, even behind one-foot thick walls of concrete. It also sees through wood, glass, dirt and most other materials used for walls — except metal, that is. Plus, since the device has a 160-degree field of view, it only takes a few seconds to scan a house or any other location.”

Dash cam video exposes cops killing man during routine traffic stop

“A local New Jersey newspaper has published the dash cam footage of police officers killing a passenger during a routine traffic stop, the latest haunting images to surface online as President Barack Obama and others push law enforcement to equip themselves with surveillance cameras in the wake of this summer’s officer-involved shooting death of an unarmed teen in Ferguson, Missouri.  If it wasn’t for an Open Public Records Act request by the South Jersey Times, the Bridgeton Police Department would not have released the short video. The footage shows officers shooting 36-year-old passenger Jerame Reid—who appeared to have his hands up.”

Cops charged after body cams capture them killing homeless camper

“James Boyd, a 38-year-old homeless man, died in March after he was shot by a shotgun, bombarded with shots of nonlethal bean bags and was the target of flash-bang grenades following an hours-long standoff with police. The police said they were dealing with Boyd because he was breaking the law by camping in the Sandia Mountains above the city. Video captured by officer helmet and body cams showed officers firing at the man, who had two small camping knives in his hand, when he turned his back and even while he was on the ground. As the man was face down after being shot, the authorities unleashed a police dog, which was seen mauling the victim’s leg.”

Bystander’s YouTube upload shows cops shooting, killing fleeing man

“The video, taken by a bystander, surfaced Wednesday, a day after the Tuesday shooting death of Antonio Zambrano-Montes, 35. The video, which sparked protests, shows police firing at the man then chasing him across a busy intersection and shooting him multiple more times. About a dozen shots were fired, according to the video. Police told the paper they had to fire because they were threatened.  The video is among a recent wave of footage uploaded to YouTube capturing police-involved shootings. The videos have come from a variety of sources, taken by bystanders and police officer dash or body cams.”

Randomly generated bot tweet prompts investigation by Dutch police

Instead, Van der Goot had handed the Twitter account over to ‘jeff_ebooks’, a bot they created which could automatically send tweets and hold conversations as an eerie simulacrum of themselves. It was jeff_ebooks who had sent the threat, and it was its creator who was being held liable.  Van der Goot told the Guardian that it makes no sense that they would be hauled in for questioning over a fairly mild claim made by an automatic Twitter account. The bot is what’s known as a markov chain generator, which uses a simple algorithm to create vaguely coherent sentences from a corpus of text.”

Fourth-grader suspended after using magic ring from ‘The Hobbit’

“A Kermit parent said his fourth-grade student was suspended Friday for allegedly making a terroristic threat.  His father, Jason Steward, said the family had been to see ‘The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies’ last weekend. His son brought a ring to his class at Kermit Elementary School and told another boy his magic ring could make the boy disappear.  Steward said the principal said threats to another child’s safety would not be tolerated – whether magical or not. Principal Roxanne Greer declined to comment on the matter.”

Mass escape from Brazilian prison after women seduce guards

“Twenty-eight inmates escaped from a Brazilian jail after three women in fantasy police costumes ‘seduced’ prison wardens. Police found three wardens naked and handcuffed inside the Nova Mutum public jail, near Cuiaba, central Brazil, the morning after the mass break-out. The women reportedly drugged the prison guards by giving them spiked whisky after convincing them to take part in an orgy, according to investigators.  Inmates then left the prison through the main doors, even taking with them guns and munitions they had taken from prison caches.  Police later found a bag of lingerie and dominatrix police uniforms believed to have been worn by the temptresses.”
