FBI-baiter Barrett Brown gets five years in prison plus $890,000 fine

“Barrett Brown is going to be spending a little longer inside than he thought after a Dallas judge threw the book at him on charges related to the hacking attack on private US intelligence firm Stratfor.  He got five years and three months for aiding and abetting, attempting to hide evidence, and threatening a Federal officer, and will have to pay a fine of $890,000, most of which will go to Stratfor.  Brown came to prominence in 2011 as a journalist with a close relationship to some members of the hacking group Anonymous. He set up the Project PM wiki to analyze leaked information from events like the HBGary hack and appeared on the media as a self-declared Anonymous spokesperson.”

Obama wants China to stop copying the NSA’s surveillance plans

“President Obama has criticized a Chinese plan to force US tech companies to install backdoors into their products for sale in the country. Without stopping for a moment to consider the phrase about glass houses and stones, he told Reuters that China would have to change its stance if it wanted to do business with the US.  The move comes as part of China’s new anti-terrorism law, which would require firms to keep data about their users inside China, hand over encryption keys and delete terrorism-related content. Worse than that, it would force companies like Google, Microsoft and Apple to poke holes in their software so that local surveillance agencies could spy on their citizens.”

The Creepy New Security Credit Score for Spotting “Insider Threats”

“The new method, meant to identify leakers of classified information but also homegrown terrorists, drug financiers, school ground shooters, and even sexual predators, builds the security equivalent of a ‘credit score.’ It would secretly attach to every individual, while automatically generating and changing scores as behaviors and associations trigger indicators of anomalous activity. Every user, based upon clearances, time in service, personnel evaluations, derogatory information, anomalous transactions, credit score, etc., etc., will be churned in the temple of big data to detect the InThs who pose the most risk to an organization.”

“Czars” No More: New Mexico Bans Policing for Profit

“New Mexico is small, but this move is significant because it shows the breakdown of a decades-old national political consensus between law enforcement bureaucracies and ‘law and order’ politicians, a Bootlegger-and-Baptist coalition that helped create and sustain the civil forfeiture regime.  Combined with former AG Eric Holder’s modest reform of a federal program that allowed police to do an end-run around state laws limiting forfeiture, there is hope that the moral cover for this deeply corrosive practice is being stripped away, and the public will finally see it for what it is: a racket.”

“IF IN DOUBT…TAKE IT!”: Government Officials On Asset Forfeiture

“One city attorney called his legal documents a ‘masterpiece of deception’ and has won 96 percent of his forfeiture cases.  An assistant district attorney takes property, even from owners who have been acquitted, because ‘people are not found innocent, they are found not guilty.’  One government official doesn’t want to disclose information about civil forfeiture, because it might become a ‘bullet-point for people that are trying to fight the program.’  A prosecutor teaches other attorneys how to take property from innocent people. He even offers this piece of advice, ‘IF IN DOUBT…TAKE IT!'”

Middle Schooler Arrested For Changing Teacher’s Desktop Background

“A middle school student who said he was just trying to play a prank on a teacher he didn’t like was charged with a cybercrime Wednesday after authorities said he hacked into his school’s secure computer network.  The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office has charged Domanik Green, an eighth-grader at Paul R. Smith Middle School, with an offense against a computer system and unauthorized access, a felony. Sheriff Chris Nocco said Thursday that Green logged onto the school’s network on March 31 using an administrative-level password without permission. NSA wants ‘front door’ access to users’ encrypted data

“NSA director Michael S. Rogers suggested tech companies could create a master multi-part encryption key capable of unlocking any device, The Washington Post reports. That way, if the key were broken into pieces, no single person would have the ability to use it. ‘I don’t want a back door,’ Rogers said. ‘I want a front door. And I want the front door to have multiple locks. Big locks.’ Government and law enforcement officials say total encryption could stand in the way of national security operations, while leaders in the tech industry and advocacy groups say the government shouldn’t have complete, unobstructed access to citizens’ private communications.”
