Wisconsin’s Shame: ‘I Thought It Was a Home Invasion’

“Don’t call your lawyer. Don’t tell anyone about this raid. Not even your mother, your father, or your closest friends. The entire neighborhood could see the police around their house, but they had to remain silent. This was not the ‘right to remain silent’ as uttered by every cop on every legal drama on television — the right against self-incrimination. They couldn’t mount a public defense if they wanted — or even offer an explanation to family and friends. Yet no one in this family was a ‘perp.’ Instead, like Cindy, they were American citizens guilty of nothing more than exercising their First Amendment rights to support Act 10 and other conservative causes in Wisconsin.”

Common Sense: Police State Blues

“No reason anymore to even feign surprise at today’s police state insanities.  At Townhall yesterday, I bemoaned the six-hour kidnapping of a 10-year-old Maryland boy and his 6-year-old sister for the terrible crime of peacefully walking home from a public park.  The children were grabbed just a couple blocks from their home . . . by police, who held them for over two hours before handing them to Montgomery County Child Protective Services.  It was hours before anyone contacted the panicked parents.  There’s no law prohibiting kids from walking down a public street, but bureaucrats are threatening this poor family over just that.”

Bloomberg: The Death of Cash

“JPMorgan Chase recently sent a letter to some of its large depositors telling them it will charge certain customers a ‘balance sheet utilization fee’ of 1 percent a year on deposits in excess of the money they need for their operations.  That amounts to a negative interest rate on deposits. [..] Several central banks have discovered that depositors will tolerate some rates below zero if withdrawing cash and storing it themselves is costly and inconvenient. There are signs of an innovation war over negative interest rates. There’s a surge of creativity around ways to drive interest rates deeper into negative territory, possibly by abolishing cash or making it depreciable.”

Feds To Banks: Call Cops on Customers Withdrawing $5,000 or More

“The Justice Department is ordering bank employees to consider calling the cops on customers who withdraw $5,000 dollars or more, a chilling example of how the war on cash is intensifying.  Banks are already required to file ‘suspicious activity reports’ on their customers, with threats of fines and even jail time if financial institutions don’t meet quotas.  But last week, ‘A senior official from the Justice Department spoke to a group of bankers about the need for them to rat out their customers to the police.’  Assistant attorney general Leslie Caldwell urged banks to ‘alert law enforcement authorities about the problem’ so that police can ‘seize the funds’ or at least ‘initiate an investigation’.”

JPMorgan Chase Bans Storage of Cash in its Safety Deposit Boxes

“The letter, entitled ‘Updated Safe Deposit Box Lease Agreement,’ was sent out to customers at the beginning of the month.  ‘Hide your wallets, the banksters are on the move,’ warns the Economic Policy Journal.  As of last month, Chase has also instituted a new policy which, ‘restricts borrowers from using cash to make payments on credit cards, mortgages, equity lines, and auto loans,’ writes Professor Joseph Salerno of the Mises Institute.  The news arrives on the back of comments by Citi’s Willem Buiter, who recently advocated abolishing cash altogether in order to ‘solve the world’s central banks’ problem with negative interest rates’.”

The Creative Destruction of New York in 47 Seconds

“The New York Times has posted a breathtaking video, soon to be displayed on the elevator walls of the new 1 World Trade Center, showing a 47-second time-lapse video of Manhattan’s history, from the perspective of the rising elevator. In less than a minute, visitors going to the observation deck will travel 102 stories into the sky and 500 years through time.  You might notice something else about the time-lapse: the pace of change slows dramatically towards the end. It’s not because New York is approaching perfection. It’s because the city government has deliberately calcified New York City, encasing the city’s structures in a legal state of suspended animation to ‘protect’ its ‘landmarks.'”

The Free Market is Solving the GMO Problem

“Look what is happening. A significant number of consumers want foods made from GMO-free grains. Food companies provided them. The article mentions some examples. General Mills will no longer use GMO cornstarch in Cheerios. Chipotle Mexican Grill wants to eliminate GMOs from all its ingredients. Whole Foods will require GMO labeling by 2018. All this is happening without any state intervention. The businesses are responding to their customers. With demand growing but the supply of non-GMO grains relatively tight, prices for those grains have gone up. The higher prices enticed farmers like the one quoted in the Des Moines Register.”

Dentist Attacked for Charging Too Little For Teeth Cleaning

“When is it illegal for a licensed dentist in Arkansas to clean teeth? When he also happens to be a licensed orthodontist.  In 2013, Dr. Ben Burris ran afoul of Arkansas’ law when he started offering low-cost teeth cleanings.  Within weeks, Ben was told by the Arkansas State Board of Dental Examiners that he was breaking the law and that his license would be revoked if he continued offering the cleanings.  Arkansas prohibits licensed dental specialists like orthodontists from doing work outside of their specialty even though they are qualified to practice general dentistry. Faced with the threat of seeing his practice ruined and his 100+ employees out of work, Ben suspended the program.”

It’s Google’s Turn to Be Plundered

hornberger1

“Let’s face it: raising taxes to fund Europe’s ever-burgeoning welfare state is not an easy process, politically speaking. It’s much easier to plunder and loot big, wealthy foreign companies. The process reminds me of how local communities here in the United States impose exorbitant taxes on hotels and motels under the idea that it’s politically better to tax ‘foreigners’ than one’s own residents. Or U.S. asset-forfeiture laws that enable cops to fund their departments with cash seized from highway travelers.  In the late 1990s, the EU went after Microsoft, which was the economic boogeyman at that time.  Microsoft ultimately was plundered to the tune of $2.3 billion.”

Google’s New Phone Service Bridges Cell and Wi-Fi Gaps

“Google says Project Fi will offer new technology that ‘gives you better coverage by intelligently connecting you to the fastest available network,’ whether that’s a cellular network or a Wi-Fi network. The service works with existing cellular networks from US carriers Sprint and T-Mobile, and according to Google, it can automatically connect phones to more than a million open Wi-Fi hotspots that it deems fast and reliable.  A flat $20-per-month fee provides unlimited calls and texts, including when you travel outside the country. You pay $10 per gigabyte of internet data sent and received across the network. If you don’t use your entire gig, you receive a credit.”
