War on Terror’s Economic and Mortality Costs Have Yet to Be Tallied

“Misallocation of resources, destruction of vast amounts of equipment and, of course, the ongoing costs of tending to the many veterans who have returned with significant physical and psychological damage are certainly bound to be factors that must prey on Western and especially US economies.  This doesn’t include the costs of the US’s internal militarization and authoritarian centralization. The damage to startups and entrepreneurial ventures is probably significant as well, as the US seems to head more and more toward a war footing.  The immense and yet little-understood costs of the war on terror ought to be considered by judicious analysts and investors.”

Special forces set to swarm US Southwest and operate among civilians

“Seven Southwestern states will soon be infiltrated by 1,200 military special ops personnel as part of a controversial domestic military training in which some of the elite soldiers will operate undetected among civilians.  Operation Jade Helm begins in July and will last for eight weeks. Soldiers will operate in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah and Colorado where some of them wil drop from planes while carrying weapons loaded with blanks in what military officials have dubbed Realistic Military Training.  But with residents of the entire states of Texas and Utah dubbed ‘hostile’ for the purposes of the exercises, Jade Helm has some concerned the drills are too realistic.”

Congress Pushes Obama-backed National Biometric ID for Americans

“The legislation, officially dubbed the ‘Legal Workforce Act‘ (H.R. 1147), is ostensibly aimed at preventing illegal immigrants from obtaining jobs. Among the most troubling elements, though, is that the bill would purport to mandate a national ID card for every American as a condition of working. It would also force every employer in America to purchase and use so-called ‘E-Verify technology’ to check with Washington, D.C., as to whether potential employees have government permission to work. Finally, it would create a massive federal database containing sensitive data on virtually every person in the country — a database that could easily be expanded to include even more information.”

CISA Security Bill: An F for Security But an A+ for Spying

“On Tuesday the bill’s authors released the full, updated text of the CISA legislation passed last week, and critics say the changes have done little to assuage their fears about wanton sharing of Americans’ private data. In fact, legal analysts say the changes actually widen the backdoor leading from private firms to intelligence agencies.  The bill, as worded, lets a private company share with the Department of Homeland Security any information construed as a cybersecurity threat ‘notwithstanding any other provision of law.’  And once the DHS obtains the information, it would automatically be shared with the NSA, the Department of Defense, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.”

David Cameron’s plans to ban online encryption dubbed ‘infeasible’

“David Cameron‘s proposals to end online encryption have been dismissed as ‘infeasible’ by the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology.  In a report titled ‘The Darknet and Online Anonymity’, the office argues that outlawing anonymity networks such as Tor may create more problems that it would solve.  The new dossier states that the network plays only a ‘minor role’ in the distribution and viewing of indecent images of children.  The importance of Tor for whistleblower organisations was also highlighted by the parliamentary office.  The report also downplays the threat posed by online drug markets like Silk Road, claiming that they shorten the supply chain from producers to consumers.”

US Bid to Contain Russia and Latin America Speeds New Alliances

“Economist Ariel Noyola Rodriguez notes that US attempts to contain emerging economies including Russia and the countries of Latin America work only to hasten these nations’ efforts to create a new, truly multipolar world order independent of Washington’s influence.  The economist argues that the Eurasian Union project and Latin America’s  Mercosur complement each other, serving as ‘a crucial mechanism in the defense of sovereignty and the development of a multipolar world order.’  The two economic blocs have a combined territory of 33 million square kilometers, a population of nearly 450 million, and a combined GDP of 8.5 trillion dollars, or 11.6% of nominal global GDP.”

Ukraine Security Chief Blasted for Targeting Jews

“Eduard Dolinsky, the director of the Ukrainian Jewish Committee, made the accusation on Facebook against Valentyn Nalyvaichenko, head of the Security Service of Ukraine, after Nalyvaichenko said his organization needed to base its work on the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, or UPA, which murdered thousands of Jews in the 1940s.  Dolinsky also said that  the security service under Nalyvaichenko published a list ‘that consisted entirely of Jewish surnames’ of people allegedly responsible for the famine that killed millions in Ukraine in the 1930s.  Earlier this month, the Ukrainian Parliament passed a bill that opened the door to state recognition of UPA, previously a taboo because of  widespread war crimes.”
