It’s Time to Make the Politicians Pay You

“Barack Obama won the White House in 2008 and, in the process, completely redefined the money-raising game for big US politics.  For the 2008 presidential campaign alone, candidates spent a combined $631 million on media. In 2012, they spent over $764 million. To put this in perspective, Kraft Food Groups and H.J. Heinz spent $583 million on advertising in 2014.  For the coming 2016 race, there is zero question candidates will be spending even more.  The upcoming run for the White House will break, by far, every spending and fundraising record there is. We could see two candidates raise over $1 billion, when not even one candidate has ever accomplished the feat.”

Hershey, Cuba

hornberger1

“Hershey, Cuba, was founded by Milton Hershey, the American chocolate tycoon who founded Hershey, Pennsylvania. Hershey invested his own money to found this town around 30 miles east of Havana.  The town revolved around a sugar mill, ‘once among the world’s most advanced,’ according to the Post. Everything in the town was first-class. ‘Neatly laid residential streets,’ houses with clapboard siding, and ‘some of the only screened-in porches anywhere in Cuba.’ Also a company hotel and ‘big, stately flagstone homes, where the American supervisors lived.’ There was also the Hershey Social Club and a golf course.”

U.S. Police Have Officially Killed 400 People in 2015

“The police have killed someone on average, every 7.48 hours.  While there is no government-run database, Killed By Police has taken it upon themselves to keep track, and are doing a fantastic job thus far. The three youngest are A’donte Washington, Jason C. Hendrix, and Kendre Omari Alston who were all only 16-years-old.  The oldest was 87-year-old Lewis Becker.  At least four officers have also been shot and killed by other officers.  Meanwhile, the Officer Down Memorial Page is reporting gunfire related deaths of on-duty officers is down 43%. According to an FBI report, Americans are less violent than ever, yet the police seem to be growing increasingly violent.”

Off-Duty Cop Wrestles, Slams Woman Into Car After Fender-Bender

“After video of a man wrestling a woman and throwing her against a car came to light Tuesday, the San Jose Police Department issued a warrant – for the woman’s arrest.  Of course the man ‘being assaulted’ was none other than an off-duty San Jose Cop in plainclothes. The officer reportedly approached the woman – without identifying himself as a police officer – after a fender bender between their cars.  Rather than write down their license plate number and take it from there, as many of us would do, he proceeded to attack what appears to be a teenage girl.  During the struggle, he yells out that he is a cop, but to the casual observer, he looks to be a sadistic abductor.”

LAPD Cop Shoots Homeless Man to Death After Requesting ID

“A Los Angeles police officer demanded identification from a homeless man named Brandon Glenn Tuesday night, then shot him twice when the man reached into his pocket to provide that identification, according to a witness.  The witness was interviewed by Luke Rudkowski of We Are Change in the video below, who did not want his face shown on camera out of fear of police retaliation.  But even Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said he was ‘very concerned’ about the shooting after witnessing footage from a surveillance camera that recorded the incident.”

NSA mass phone surveillance revealed by Edward Snowden ruled illegal

“The US court of appeals has ruled that the bulk collection of telephone metadata is unlawful, in a landmark decision that clears the way for a full legal challenge against the National Security Agency.  A panel of three federal judges for the second circuit overturned an earlier ruling that the controversial surveillance practice first revealed to the US public by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden in 2013 could not be subject to judicial review. The judges opted not to end the domestic bulk collection while Congress decides its fate, calling judicial inaction ‘a lesser intrusion’ on privacy than at the time the case was initially argued.”

Poland’s Idea Bank Puts Mobile ATM Into BMW i3

“The appropriately named Idea Bank has piloted a program where its members can summon an ATM-laden BMW i3 to conduct transactions. Customers simply need to download and register the app, then request one of the four i3s with built-in ATMs to any location within the user area.  It might sound like something concocted for those too lazy to hoof it a few blocks, but the real purpose behind the service is to benefit Polish entrepreneurs and business operators. As many as 80% of the people surveyed say that they make nightly cash deposits, with half of them doing so after dark.”

Dutch police launch criminal investigation into Uber

“Dutch prosecutors are launching a criminal investigation into Uber for providing an illegal taxi service following court rulings and €10,000 fines.  Uber continued to operate its UberPop peer-to-peer ride-sharing service in the Netherlands in violation of a Dutch court order which saw fines of €10,000 for every driver caught providing the UberPop service.  It is the latest setback for the taxi service, which has been banned in several European countries in recent months, and recently had its offices in Paris raided by French police.  Uber allows users to summon taxi services with smartphones while its UberPop arm links private drivers to passengers.”

FinCEN Fines Ripple Labs for Bank Secrecy Act Violations

“The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FincCEN) has fined Ripple Labs and its subsidiary XRP II $700,000 for ‘willful violations’ of the Bank Secrecy Act.  According to a 5th May press release, Ripple Labs failed to register as a money services business (MSB) with FinCEN prior to selling XRP, the digital token used within the Ripple network. Additionally, the company is said to have failed to implement appropriate anti-money laundering (AML) procedures.  FinCEN Director Jennifer Shasky Calvery said in a statement that the event should serve as a reminder that all US companies that facilitate the exchange digital currencies must bring products to market that comply with AML law.”

Cryptocurrency ‘Ripple’ Pursues Freezing Funds of Former Co-Founder

“Ripple, the so-called decentralized payment network, has frozen funds worth more than US$1 million that belong to the company’s former co-founder Jed McCaleb.  Since their initial launch, Ripple has represented themselves to the public as a payment network of ‘decentralized’ gateways that convert different assets or types of payments—such as bitcoin or Paypal—into IOUs tradeable in the Ripple network.  On August 1, 2014, Ripple introduced a feature called ‘Balance Freeze’ which allowed the network’s gateways to freeze and prevent funds from being traded, an action that they claimed was necessary to protect the gateways’ wallets from being compromised.”
