Why Are so Many Refugees Drowning? And Why Don’t They Fly?

“It’s not because it’s too expensive. Rosling points out that a seat on these boats costs €1,000 or more, while a flight from Ethiopia to Sweden is only €400; from Lebanon to the UK is also €400; and from Egypt to Italy is only €320.  It’s not because their governments are stopping them, either. By and large, these states have no real ability or interest in stopping emigration.  Rather, it is about incentives.  Rosling points to EU Directive 2001/51/EC, which states — in essence — that to combat illegal immigration, ‘Every airline and boatline that brings a person without the proper documents for entry has to pay all the costs for returning that person back to their country of origin.'”

I Wish My Job Didn’t Exist

“I was not hired to teach students, perform research or help our students become better leaders. But without my work, many of our students would not be able to enroll in our university.  My work entails keeping Norwich out of trouble with many regulations, such as the Clery Act, FERPA, and Title IX, but I’d like to focus on perhaps the most maddening set of regulations—those pertaining to online education. Over the last four years, Norwich has spent over $500,000, a figure that includes my salary, fees paid to states, surety bonds, agent permits, registered agents, and travel costs. Not one cent had any educational value.”

Australian public programming questions value of reading to children

“‘Evidence shows that the difference between those who get bedtime stories and those who don’t — the difference in their life chances — is bigger than the difference between those who get elite private schooling and those that don’t,’ British academic Adam Swift told ABC presenter Joe Gelonesi.  Swift said parents should be mindful of the advantage provided by bedtime reading.  ‘I don’t think parents reading their children bedtime stories should constantly have in their minds the way that they are unfairly disadvantaging other people’s children, but I think they should have that thought occasionally,’ he said.”

Shopping tools help patients find cash prices for medical procedures

“With rising out-of-pocket expenses, patients are increasingly demanding information about price and quality that historically has been unavailable.  Entrepreneurs, states and employers now offer such tools. San Francisco-based Pokitdok (pokitdok.com), co-founded by CEO Lisa Maki in 2011, operates in 44 markets, including Los Angeles. You can search the 50 most shopped medical procedures among 40,000 providers who have submitted their cash price.  New York-based Clear Health Costs (clearhealthcosts.com) queries individual healthcare providers in eight markets, including Los Angeles, for a cash price on up to 35 common medical procedures.”

Paul Rosenberg: ‘Production Versus Plunder’, Part 5

“The great benefactors of humanity – the unnamed first farmers – experienced a stunning explosion of creativity and very shortly found themselves the effective prisoners of barbaric, ignorant men who harnessed and slowly ruined what they had created.  At first, the farmers simply gave up a portion of their harvest and tried their best to work around the stupid, barbaric rulers. It was only when a more clever set of rulers arrived that the more serious damage began. As successive waves of rulership rolled over the Tigris-Euphrates valley, the structures of government and their associated theologies and punishments occupied more and more of men’s minds and activities.”

Homeland Security Revives National License Plate Reader Program

“A year after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) scuttled plans to build its own nationwide database of vehicle license plate data, the agency is seeking bids from private contractors to provide the agency access to the same information.  DHS canceled last year’s plan in the wake of TSA domestic spying revelations and subsequent outrage over increasingly intrusive government surveillance. At the time, we predicted DHS would find another way to track every single car on the road, likely by relying on the services of private companies like Vigilant Solutions, one of the largest aggregators and purveyors of license-plate data.”

Never Hand Over Your Gold To The Bank Of England For “Safekeeping”

logo3

“With London, Paris, and Basel’s compliance, Nazi Germany looted 23.1 metric tons of gold without a shot being fired. More than two-thirds of that gold was traded with the Dutch and Belgian national banks and was eventually transported from Amsterdam and Brussels to the Reichsbank’s vaults in Berlin. Czechoslovakia’s diligent planning to safeguard its national gold reserves, together with its misplaced faith in the integrity of the new international financial system, had come to nothing. [..] Churchill himself demanded to know how the government could urge people to enlist in the military when it was ‘so butter-fingered that six million pounds of gold can be transferred to the Nazi government.'”
