WV teacher threatened with fine for violating Obama school snack rules

“The Williamson PreK-8 teacher, who was not identified, would give her students ‘wrapped candy’ as a reward for their hard work and good behavior.  Because the practice was an alleged violation of the federal rules championed by first lady Michelle Obama, Mingo County Schools Director of Child Nutrition Kay Maynard ‘placed a call to officials at the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) to report the incident,’ the Williamson Daily News reports.  Maynard also spoke to Williamson PreK-8 principal Shannon Blackburn, telling him about the possibility of a monetary fine for the teacher.  When news spread, parents and students mobilized, collecting pennies to pay the potential fine.”

Police Fatally Shoot Okla. Man While Forcibly Rescuing Him From Flood

“The troopers responded to a report of a stranded vehicle in Okmulgee County, about 20 miles south of Tulsa, about 9:30 p.m. Friday. They found two men trying to remove a vehicle from a roadway over which water was rising and moving quickly, according to Capt. Paul Timmons.  ‘They were trying to get them to come out of the water. They were worried about them getting swept away,’ Timmons said. ‘(The men), for whatever reason, were just really upset about having to leave the vehicle there.’  At least one man attacked a trooper after reaching dry land and was shot and killed.  KOKI-TV reported that the man who was killed was an assistant pastor of Faith Bible Church in Tulsa.”

The Government Tells Ross Ulbricht He Owes It $183,961,921

“In a memo on Thursday, government prosecutors imposed a money judgement against the Ulbricht equal to $183,961,921. They came to that number based on the transactional records from Silk Road showing the amount of illegal drug sales as $182,960,285 combined with the transactions for fake identification equal to $1,001,636.  The government contends Ulbricht is liable for all transactions on Silk Road because of the structure of the site. Ulbricht will be required to pay the full amount of money, which is likely not dischargeable in bankruptcy.”

Jeffrey Tucker: The Deeply Tragic Life Sentencing of Ross Ulbricht

“If you are a tenured professor performing artificial trading experiments in a classroom and publishing your results in expensive journals, you are toasted as a genius and sometimes given prestigious prizes. If you innovate with venture capital funding and the backing of large tech firms, you are rewarded with riches and fame. But if you are a quiet geek who creates a more realistic experiment online, one that actually benefits humanity, and never sought funding from any establishment source, you are swept up in a sting operation and imprisoned for life.  As for the online markets themselves, the jailing of Ross does nothing to stop them. They are now larger than ever.”

Can you tell the difference between Bush and Obama on the Patriot Act?

Dick Cheney and George W Bush were widely condemned by Democrats for their baseless fear-mongering to pressure members of Congress into passing expansive surveillance laws that infringed on Americans’ civil liberties.  See if you can tell the difference between the Obama administration’s statements about the renewal of the Patriot Act and those from the Bush administration when they wanted Congress to renew some of the controversial mass surveillance authorities they passed after 9/11.”

Senate Votes To Turn NSA Spying Back On, But With Reforms

“After allowing portions of the Patriot Act to expire early Monday morning, lawmakers voted on Tuesday to reinstate the National Security Agency’s sweeping data collection programs, though with modest reforms to the agency’s programs and the secret court charged with keeping it in check.  In a 67-32 vote, the upper chamber agreed to pass the USA Freedom Act, effectively ending the two-day lapse in the NSA’s programs. The act re-establishes modified versions of the expired Patriot Act provisions.  White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest confirmed Tuesday that the administration was still issuing regular orders under the expired Section 215 of the Patriot Act.”

Jacob Hornberger, Rand Paul: A Profile in Courage

hornberger1

“The U.S. Freedom Act is the reform of the Patriot Act that Obama, Clapper, and other warfare statists wanted. But Rand Paul would have no part of it. Let the Patriot Act expire — without reform — was his position.  The Patriot Act and the U.S. Freedom Act are two of the most anti-American schemes in U.S. history. Both schemes would fit in perfectly in any totalitarian regime. Moreover, employing fearmongering is a time-honored strategy of totalitarian regimes to scare people into trading away their freedom for the pretense of security.  Fear has been the coin of the realm of the U.S. national-security state apparatus since the day it was grafted onto America’s governmental system after World War II.”

Does Jade Helm Violate Posse Comitatus?

“What might the military mean by ‘realistic environment’ in the context of Jade Helm? In terms of culture and physical setting, only English-speaking America resembles English-speaking America. As a concerned resident of one of the affected small towns in Texas told a newspaper: ‘What place looks like this—except this?’ Put another way, if Special Ops were to prowl the coffee shops of North Korea, Ukraine, or Tehran questioning locals for information, they would be rounded up within an hour. So, as Jon Stewart might have asked if he had looked a little deeper into the Jade Helm scenario, whom is America fixing to invade? Canada?”

TSA Overlooks 95% of Weapons In Security Checkpoint Tests

bruce-blog3

“An internal investigation of the Transportation Security Administration revealed security failures at dozens of the nation’s busiest airports, where undercover investigators were able to smuggle mock explosives or banned weapons through checkpoints in 95 percent of trials, ABC News has learned.  The series of tests were conducted by Homeland Security Red Teams who pose as passengers, setting out to beat the system.”

Woman unknowingly dumps Apple I worth $200K at recycling plant

“A recycling center in the Silicon Valley is looking for a woman who dropped off an old Apple computer that turned out to be a collectible item worth $200,000.  Victor Gichun of Clean Bay Area says the woman dropped off boxes of electronics that she had cleaned out from her garage after her husband died.  She didn’t want a tax receipt or leave her contact information, and it wasn’t until a few weeks later that workers at the recycling center opened the boxes to discover an Apple I (one) computer inside.  It was one of only about 200 first-generation Apple computers made in 1976.  Gichun sold the computer to a private collection, and he wants to split the proceeds with the mystery donor.”
