Greece’s New Finance Minister: Bitcoin ‘Highly Problematic Currency’

“The Finance Minister of Greece’s new radical left-wing government, while at the center of anti-austerity financial policy, is in no way optimistic about Bitcoin, it has emerged.  In an article on his website blog from April 2013, Yanis Varoufakis discusses the ‘impossibility’ of a decentralized currency being controlled ‘apolitically,’ and describes this as a ‘dangerous fantasy.’  He stated: ‘[T]here can be no de-politicized currency capable of ‘powering’ an advanced, industrial society.’  Varoufakis has inherited Europe’s worst-performing economy, and will seek to end the austerity measures put in place by the previous Greek government following the 2008 financial crisis.”

Ron Paul: Greece Today, America Tomorrow?

“While most commentators have focused on Greece’s welfare state, much of Greece’s deficit was caused by excessive military spending. Greece’s military budget remains among the largest in the European Union.  Despite all the handwringing over how the phony sequestration cuts have weakened America’s defenses, the United States military budget remains larger than the combined budgets of the world’s next 15 highest spending militaries. Little, if any, of the military budget is spent defending the American people from foreign threats. Instead, the American government wastes billions of dollars on an imperial foreign policy that makes Americans less safe.”

The Troubled Greek Bailout Process Lurches Forward

“On July 13, Athens reached a deal with its creditors to begin negotiations for a third bailout for the country, only a few days after Greeks voted against austerity in a referendum. Then, early on July 16, the Greek Parliament approved a list of painful reforms, including spending cuts on pensions and higher taxes. The vote was extremely controversial, both inside Parliament and out. Though the austerity measures were approved, 32 lawmakers from the ruling Coalition of the Radical Left party, known commonly as Syriza, voted against the reforms, whole another six party members abstained.  Outside Parliament, Athens saw its most violent protests of the year.”

Netanyahu lost his Iran bet, but his next gamble may be disastrous

“[Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu’s spokespeople said he plans to ‘kill himself’ pursuing the last remaining option for scuttling the deal – preventing its ratification by the U.S. House of Representatives – by persuading Democratic congressmen to defect to the Republican camp and vote against their president. The destruction and devastation he avoided inflicting on the nuclear facilities scattered throughout Iran, he now wants to wreck on what’s left of U.S.-Israel relations. Here we again see his compulsive gambler syndrome: After losing his pants, he’s now putting his underwear on the roulette wheel in a move that experts on American politics say hasn’t much of a chance.”

French Anti-Uber Protest: Cabbies Burn Cars, Attack Uber Drivers

“According to the police, 2,800 taxi drivers are protesting today against UberPOP, the European equivalent of UberX (as UberX in France is Uber in the U.S.). With UberPOP, everybody can become an Uber driver — taxi drivers see the service as unfair competition as they have to get a special license. Yet, this doesn’t really explain why cabbies are now attacking Uber drivers, burning and breaking their cars.  Many countries are trying to ban the service. It was banned in Brussels, the Netherlands and, yes, France.   Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve already issued a statement, saying that he asked Paris police chief to issue a decree making UberPOP illegal (once again).”

London Tube strike: Sack the drivers, and roll out the robots

“Paris got its first driverless line (Metro 14) in 1998. A second (Metro 15) opened in 2012, and Metro 1 will go fully driverless soon.  The Parisian system seems to work very well: trains on Metro 1 will arrive and depart, on full autopilot, every 85 seconds, massively increasing capacity by reducing human error.  In an emergency, a human in the central control room can take charge of the train by remote – there’s no need for an overpaid, over-unionised button-pusher on board.  And while some Luddites may be afraid of driverless trains, the truth is that machines are far less likely to make mistakes than people.”

NHS hospital spends £1.3million on fleet of Swiss robot workers

“The NHS droids will move medical supplies, linen, food and waste around the £824m South Glasgow University Hospital when it opens on April 27.  The robots – known as automated guided vehicles (AGVs) – will use a network of underground tunnels and a dedicated lift to navigate the 14-storey hospital. Jim Magee, who is in control of the 26 Swiss-built porter-bots, said they will be a ‘massive asset to the campus’.  Facility Supervisor Billy MacDonald, who boasts 25 years’ experience with the NHS, said: “The AGVs will help make things run efficiently and smoothly.  ‘Watching them go about their work is hugely impressive and they don’t ask for holidays of course.'”

Mystery pooper: Firm to pay $2.2M over forced DNA testing for workers

“A federal jury has concluded that an Atlanta grocery warehousing firm must pay two employees a combined $2.2 million for forcing them to submit to a buccal cheek swab to determine if their DNA was a match to feces being left throughout the facility.  Atlas Logistics claimed the ‘genetic information’ at issue wasn’t covered by the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA). Atlas Logistics asserted that GINA excludes analyses of DNA, RNA, chromosomes, proteins, or metabolites if such analyses do not reveal an individual’s propensity for disease.”
