Obama-led drone strikes kill innocents 90% of the time: report

“Drone strikes conducted by the United States during a 5-month-long campaign in Afghanistan caused the deaths of unintended targets nearly nine out of ten times, leaked intelligence documents suggest.  The apparent 10 percent success rate with regards to a specific span in America’s drone war is among the most damning revelations to surface so far as the result of a series of articles published by The Intercept on Thursday this week which rely on classified and confidential intelligence documents supplied by an unknown source. ‘These docs illustrate what a video game, drained of all humanity, these drone assassinations have become,’ founding editor Glenn Greenwald tweeted.”

Obama’s drone war a ‘recruitment tool’ for Isis: US air force whistleblowers

“Four former US air force service members, with more than 20 years of experience between them operating military drones, have written an open letter to Barack Obama warning that the program of targeted killings by unmanned aircraft has become a major driving force for Isis and other terrorist groups, calling for a rethink of a military tactic that they say has ‘fueled the feelings of hatred that ignited terrorism and groups like Isis, while also serving as a fundamental recruitment tool similar to Guantánamo Bay’.  In particular, they argue, the killing of innocent civilians in drone airstrikes has acted as one of the most ‘devastating driving forces for terrorism and destabilization around the world’.”

The West’s Cold War strategy: arm Islamic extremists that became al-Qaida VIDEO

“Where did militant Salafi groups like ISIS and al-Qaida come from? The answer is not as complicated as many make it out to be — but, to understand, we must delve into the history of the Cold War, the historical period lied about in the West perhaps more than any other.  We needn’t reach back far into history, just a few decades.  A much-circulated photo of an article published in British newspaper the Independent in 1993 exemplifies the West’s twisted hypocrisy. Titled ‘Anti-Soviet warrior puts his army on the road to peace,’ it features a large photo of Osama bin Laden, who, at the time, was a Western ally.”

Stop-and-Seize Turns Police Into Self-Funding Gangs

“With government unable to pay police as much as they need or would like, police are confiscating their revenue directly from the populace.  The threat to individual liberty from stop-and-seize is painfully clear.  Without requirements for an arrest or for a warrant, the power to confiscate cash is a clear diminution of property rights. Effectively, the police have been given official sanction to commit literal highway robbery without the threat of punishment. People whose property was seized must pay a lot of money and spend a long time in court for even the chance of getting it back, and police who seize money with no good reason don’t, apparently, suffer any threat of discipline.”

Police Civil Asset Forfeitures Exceed All Burglaries in 2014

“Between 1989 and 2010, U.S. attorneys seized an estimated $12.6 billion in asset forfeiture cases. The growth rate during that time averaged +19.4% annually. In 2010 alone, the value of assets seized grew by +52.8% from 2009 and was six times greater than the total for 1989. Then by 2014, that number had ballooned to roughly $4.5 billion for the year, making this 35% of the entire number of assets collected from 1989 to 2010 in a single year. According to the FBI, the total amount of goods stolen by criminals in 2014 burglary offenses suffered an estimated $3.9 billion in property losses. This means that the police are now taking more assets than the criminals.”

U.S. Is Often Unsure About Who Will Die In Drone Strikes

“Every independent investigation of the strikes has found far more civilian casualties than administration officials admit. Gradually, it has become clear that when operators in Nevada fire missiles into remote tribal territories on the other side of the world, they often do not know who they are killing, but are making an imperfect best guess. The proliferating mistakes have given drones a sinister reputation in Pakistan and Yemen and have provoked a powerful anti-American backlash in the Muslim world.  Despite the bad reviews overseas, drone strikes remain persistently popular with the American public, with about two-thirds expressing approval in polls.”

Sheldon Richman: How to Respond to the Paris Attacks

“Even authoritarian and totalitarian states can’t prevent domestic terrorism. What hope do relatively open societies have? Open societies abound with ‘soft targets,’ that is, noncombatants going about their everyday lives. They are easy hits for those determined to inflict harm, especially if the assailants seek to die in the process.  We also know, as U.S. officials acknowledge, that NATO bombing of jihadis boosts recruitment.  So if Americans and Europeans want safer societies, they must discard the old, failed playbook, which has only one play — more violence — and adopt a new policy: nonintervention.”

NSA Whistleblower: Don’t Blame Edward Snowden for Paris Attacks

“With intelligence protection largely illusionary, the only way to prevent continued terrorists attacks is for countries to re-evaluate their foreign policies. For more than a decade, Western countries have waged endless war in the Middle East producing only death, destruction, hatred—and now ISIS. At the same time, those countries have come to assume they could conduct violent regime change throughout the region—Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Yemen, Syria—like pieces on a chessboard, with no price to pay. For them, sadly, Paris may at last be a wake-up call. There are no Robert’s Rules of Order when it comes to war, and one man’s Hellfire missile is another man’s suicide belt.”

U.S.-backed rebels blow up U.S. Humvee with U.S.-supplied missiles

“Rarely do the weapons and equipment of a conflict come together in a single video to highlight how America now fights its wars, but there it is. It is unclear if the U.S. Humvee is one that the Islamic State might have captured from Iraqi security forces during its blitz across parts of northern Iraq last year, or if it’s from U.S.-supplied Iraqi militias who have since entered Syria to prop up President Bashar al-Assad’s fledging forces. But one thing is for certain: that truck was built in the U.S.A.”

No, the Military Has Not Withered Away Under Obama

“In spite of claims that the US is currently engaging in ‘historic’ cuts, today’s anemic military reductions have a long way to go to match the military reductions put in place by Dwight Eisenhower during his administration.  If any president today attempted anything similar to what Eisenhower attempted, he would be immediately denounced as a terrorist and collaborator.  And, naturally, we have every reason to believe that, regardless of who the president is, military spending will spike again the next time a president mobilizes for a new war, whether it’s in Ukraine, Syria, or some other exotic location where we will be assured that the absolutely vital interests of the US are in grave danger.”
