“Don’t Be a Puppet”: New FBI CVE Tool Targets Young People

“Don’t Be a Puppet, the game developed by the FBI, ‘leads the viewer through a series of games and tips intended to teach students how to identify someone who may be falling prey to radical extremists. With each successful answer, scissors cut a puppet’s string, until the puppet is free.’  The game asks students to identify the types of social media activities that ‘should raise alarm.’ ‘Among the choices were a person posting about a plan to attend a political event, or someone with an Arabic name posting about going on ‘a mission’ overseas. The correct answer was the posting with the Arabic name,’ Goodstein described.”

UK May Approve Bill Allowing Spying on Individuals via Their Kids Toys

“British government’s new investigatory bill (pdf) has a proposal on making it legal to hack smart toys in order to allow investigators to get to pry on suspects.  This strategy could be one of many measures governments around the world are taking to track down cyber criminals and terrorists.  Furthermore, the bill has also made it a legal duty for all internet service providers to support law enforcement agencies in hacking smart devices like smart toys.  The most important clause the draft bill has is that the government can ask for the break of end-to-end encryption from private companies at any time and the companies have to oblige.”

Man arrested in toymaker hack that exposed data for millions of kids

“The breach ultimately exposed data for 11.6 million people, 6.4 million of whom were minors. Personal information for children included their names, gender and birthdates, while details for parents included mailing and e-mail addresses, security questions used for password resets, IP addresses, password data, and download histories. The trove also included headshots and logs of chats between parents and their children. The information was stored in a database for VTech’s Learning Lodge app store, which is used by the company’s electronic toys.  A follow-up article reported that the unidentified hacker had no plans to publish or otherwise share the pilfered data.”

Cop who wanted to photograph teen’s erection in sexting case commits suicide

“Detective David Edward Abbott, a member of the Northern Virginia-Washington DC Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, last year had obtained a warrant to inject a young boy with a drug that would cause an erection. Abbott wanted to photograph that erection and compare it with photos found on a 15-year-old girl’s phone. Amid a public outcry, the Manassas City police eventually decided against doing that. The 17-year-old boy got a year of probation for sexting his teen girlfriend.  For at least two years, Abbott had an inappropriate relationship with a boy, now 13, police alleged. He was accused of soliciting sexual acts on the phone, via text messages and social media.”

Police Kill Hostage Who Had Sued Them Over an Earlier SWAT Raid

thelrcblog-5002

“The only casualty of an hours-long SWAT raid and hostage situation in Neenah, Wisconsin was a disabled veteran who had filed a $50 million civil rights suit after he survived a similar SWAT raid three years ago.  Michael Funk, a co-owner of Eagle Nation Cycles, was shot and killed by police after being held hostage for several hours on December 5.  The ‘Peacekeeper’ did nothing to protect Michael Funk, whom the Neenah Police supposedly set out to rescue. His death was the product of either incomprehensible misfortune or uncanny – and malicious – marksmanship on the part of a police department that institutionally had cause to resent him.”

Jerry Seinfeld’s lemonade stand gets shut down by police

“Seinfeld and his family were shut down by East Hampton, New York, police on Tuesday, Aug. 18 for setting up a lemonade stand, reports CBS New York.  Seinfeld’s wife Jessica posted a photo on Instagram of her son, Julian, and two of his friends with their hands up (jokingly) amidst the police drama.  When officers arrived after a neighbor complained about illegally parked cars, they informed the Seinfelds that it is not legal to run a lemonade stand on village property.  ‘Lemonade dreams crushed by local neighbor, but not before raising lots of money for @loverecycled,’ Jessica Schneider wrote on Instagram. ‘Thanks to all of our customers and big tippers!'”

Cops Raid Little Girls’ “Illegal” Lemonade Stand, Shut it Down

“Last week, police in Texas heroically saved the town from likes of two young girls who attempted to open a black market lemonade stand. The girls, one 7-year-old and one 8-year-old, dared to try to raise money to buy a Father’s day present for their dad by setting up a lemonade stand in their neighborhood.  Andria and Zoey Green told ABC affiliate KLTV they were trying to raise about $100 for a Father’s Day present. They wanted to take him to Splash Kingdom.  Over the weekend, the two young entrepreneurs took to the streets with their delicious batch of homemade lemonade and began to provide willing customers with their product.”

Federal Appeals Court Overrules Judge Who Believed Motorist Over A Cop

“Judges rarely side with drivers over the word of a police officer, and the Sixth Circuit US Court of Appeals took action last week to keep it that way. A three-judge appellate panel corrected a lower court judge believed driver Samuel Duane Johnson Jr was more credible than the Michigan State Police troopers who stopped him.  Troopers Bradley Ross and Jason Walters were on ‘directed patrol’ that morning, which means their supervisors expected them to write as many traffic tickets as possible, even for the pettiest of offenses. Typically, this means writing thirty citations in a night.”

Rolls-Royce Lays Bare Entrenched Failings to Stunned Investors

“Rolls-Royce Holdings Plc Chief Executive Officer Warren East revealed the full extent of the earnings meltdown facing Britain’s leading manufacturing company and said he’s uncovered issues with its organization and management that run deeper than was apparent when he took over in July.  East’s comments come as a further blow to a business that was regarded as Britain’s biggest industrial success story, recovering from bankruptcy to become a poster child of Margaret Thatcher’s privatization drive and take on the likes of General Electric Co. The CEO said he sees no quick fix, effectively writing off a recovery before 2017, when the results of a restructuring plan begin filtering through.”

Never Mind $35, The World’s Cheapest Oil Is Already Close to $20

“Oil has slumped to levels last seen in the global financial crisis in 2009 amid a global supply glut. While the prices of benchmarks West Texas Intermediate and Brent hover in the $30s, they represent a category of crude — light and low in sulfur — that is more highly valued because it’s easier to refine. Some producers of thicker, blacker and more sulfurous varieties have suffered heavier losses and are already living in the $20s.  Ironically, those selling at the lowest prices have even more incentive to pump, potentially deepening the glut that’s weighing on prices.”
