France Changes Constitution To Protect “Emergency” Police Powers

“Europe’s Patriot Act has finally taken shape: according to a proposed amendment, the French state-of-emergency police powers, such as to conduct warrantless searches and order house arrests, will be unconditionally shielded from court challenges.  In other words, a handful of government bureaucrats will soon be above any and all legal ‘checks and balances’, and will be provided absolute power to decide the fate of virtually any French citizen without due or any process. Now it is the turn of the ‘democratic’ western powers to unleash their own mini USSR on their citizens. You know, in the name of ‘preventing terrorism.'”

Americans: ‘Online Surveillance Is O.K. For Most’

“A majority of Americans say they support warrantless government surveillance of the Internet communications of U.S. citizens, according to a new [AP] poll.  It’s at least somewhat important for the government to sacrifice freedoms to ensure safety, most say in the survey. Majorities both of Republicans (67 percent) and Democrats (55 percent) favor government surveillance of Americans’ Internet activities to watch for suspicious activity that might be connected to terrorism. Independents are more divided, with 40 percent in favor and 35 percent opposed. Only a third of Americans under 30, but nearly two-thirds 30 and older, support warrantless surveillance.”

UK reviews home schooling amid fears children are being ‘radicalised’

“It is unclear how many children and young adults are being home schooled but it is thought to be in the region of 20,000 to 50,000.  Parents do not have to inform their council that they are educating their children at home, leaving the government in the dark about the number of kids at risk of radicalisation through education at home. ‘For every parent doing a brilliant job, there may be someone filling their child’s mind with poison. We just don’t know. We don’t have reliable figures,’ the source said.  The Education Secretary’s new approach comes after the announcement of an investigation into the activities of unregistered schools and madrassahs.”

E.P.A. Broke Law With Social Media Push for Water Rule

“The Environmental Protection Agency engaged in ‘covert propaganda’ and violated federal law when it blitzed social media to urge the public to back an Obama administration rule intended to better protect the nation’s streams and surface waters, congressional auditors have concluded.  The effort violated federal law, the G.A.O. said, because as it ricocheted around the Internet, many people who received the message would not have known that it was written by the E.P.A., making it covert propaganda. Penalties include fines and even possible jail time. But even Republicans on Capitol Hill say it will not be enforced that way.”

Free Speech Limits to Fight ISIS Pose a Greater Threat Than ISIS

UK Police to Receive Hidden Browser History from Internet Providers

“The measure will force internet providers to retain all ‘web browsing information’ which will help police to ‘hunt down and identify the most serious cyberbullies and trolls,’ Theresa May of Britain’s home security said.  The Investigatory Powers Bill will give internet providers a pseudo-police role allowing them to ‘override encryption if needed.’  The new regulation will persuade all cell phone and web companies to retain records of every citizen for at least a year, providing a data pool which police and security services can access.  However many citizens are concerned over such a library of personal data, which has historically been ripe for abuse by authorities and hackers.”

US aimed to nuke civilian populations in enemy cities during Cold War

“A newly released Cold War-era list of nuclear targets shows the US planned to inflict ‘systematic destruction’ on enemy cities and target the ‘population’ of those areas. It is the most comprehensive Cold War nuclear target list to become declassified.  The Strategic Air Command (SAC) Atomic Weapons Requirements Study for 1959, produced in June 1956, was published by the National Security Archive on Tuesday.  Totaling almost 800 pages, the document details targets in over 1,200 cities, including Moscow, Beijing, and Warsaw. The list for each city contains details on targeting the population, along with industrial and infrastructural targets.”
