“If I wanted to talk about ‘Star Wars,’ I called the author of a dozen Star Wars novels.  If I wanted to talk about Twisted Sister, I called up the founder of the band. If I wanted to talk sex I called the women who ran the ‘Ask Women’ podcast.  I wanted to know at what point were they at their worst. And how they got better. Each person created a unique life. I wanted to know how they did it. I was insanely curious.  Here are the most important things I learned. I can’t specify which person I learned what from. It hurts my head when I think about it because many of the 80 said the exact same thing about how they ended up where they were.”

“A zero-sum assumption is that there is a fixed pool of any specific good and that in order for you to have more, someone else has to accept less. This is the essence of the common slogan, ‘there are only so many pieces of pie.’ If you want an extra slice, someone else has to accept one less. A positive-sum assumption, on the other hand, assumes that the pool of assets can be expanded. In other words, if there are not enough slices of pie for your liking, you can make a new pie for yourself. The important thing about zero-sum and positive-sum assumptions is that they form a mental pattern, an analysis program in our brains, coloring wide areas of thought.”

Exploding Sunni-Shia Conflict: Impact on Oil, Stocks, and More

And, although that was not the intent, the U.S. is giving every strategic advantage to Shia President Bashar al-Assad. In Iraq, the United States is also on the Shia side. But in this case it is deliberate.  On the all-important Arabian Peninsula (including Yemen), the United States is on the Sunni side. The U.S. has forever been a major supplier of arms to the Sunni-dominated armed forces on the peninsula.”

Ron Paul: The IRS and Congress Both Hold Our Liberty in Contempt

“This week the Justice Department announced it would not charge former Internal Revenue Service (IRS) official Lois Lerner with contempt of Congress. Some members of Congress requested that Lerner be charged with contempt after she refused to testify at a congressional hearing investigating her role in denying or delaying the applications for tax-exempt status of ‘tea party’ and pro-limited government organizations. In contrast, private citizens called before Congress are harangued and even bullied. Congress should stop using the hearing process to intimidate private citizens and start using it to intimidate those government officials who are threatening our liberty.”

“I have no desire to be in the mainstream stock market for the duration. Even less to be in the bond market—the bubble there has gotten bigger and bigger over the last few years, to the point that it has reached a truly unholy size. Real estate is holding on, but it’s floating on a sea of debt, so when the bond bubble breaks, real estate—certainly in the Anglo-Saxon world—is in for big trouble. (And real estate is the most obvious thing for cash-strapped local governments to tax, as things turn down.)  I really don’t see any way out of this thing, other than through the wringer we’re now caught in. However long they last, I do think we’re in the last moments of calm before the storm breaks.”

Travel Surveillance, Traveler Intrusion [2013]

“The United States government practices surprisingly comprehensive surveillance of air travel, amassing data about the comings and goings of all Americans who fly. Travel expert Edward Hasbrouck has been researching travel surveillance for many years. His findings reveal a stunning level of government surveillance, control of the traveler, and intrusion into commercial travel IT systems.  By April 2, the Transportation Security Administration will either have begun a public comment process on its policy of putting travelers through imaging machines that can see under their clothes, or it will be in clear violation of a D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling requiring it to do so.”
