Janet Yellen, the Nation’s New Chief Slumlord

CHS9a1

“Janet Yellen is the nation’s new top slumlord. Her policies of unlimited liquidity, QE and zero interest rates directly enable financial Elites to beat out Mom and Pop rental housing investors and buy tens of thousands of rental properties at will.  Access to free money and near-zero interest rates gives institutional buyers a built-in advantage over Mom and Pop rental property owners: no collateral and free profits from super-low rates available to those closest to the Fed’s QE money spigot.  Institutional ownership turns the rental housing stock into a Fed-enabled financial monoculture.  To Fed-enabled Institutional landlords, you are an income stream to be skimmed.

Life in the Electronic Concentration Camp

AGOW_WebAD_Small2

“Whether it was collecting rainwater to water your lawn, lighting a cigarette in the privacy of your home, or gathering with friends in your backyard for a Sunday evening Bible study—the government will know each and every transgression and use them against you.  The electronic concentration camp is perhaps the most insidious of the police state’s many tentacles, impacting almost every aspect of our lives and making it that much easier for the government to encroach on our most vital freedoms, ranging from free speech, assembly and the press to due process, privacy, and property, by eavesdropping on our communications, tracking our movements and spying on our activities.”

Canada’s ban on e-cigarettes makes no sense

“E-cigarettes with nicotine content have been banned from open sale by Health Canada decree, though they are available from underground shops or through online order from the many jurisdictions, including the U.S., where they are legal. Health Canada’s line on e-cigarettes is that they may pose health risks and have not been fully evaluated for safety, quality and efficacy. If that is the case, Health Canada should take it upon itself to research what health risks there may be, and carry out the evaluations it feels are necessary. Simply banning e-cigarettes on suspicion they might be dangerous makes no sense when conventional cigarettes are readily available at every corner store.”

The Daily Bell – Investment Trends 2014

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“Welcome to 2014. Here are some dominant social themes I’ve selected to watch in 2014. In each case, I’ve selected a recent mainstream article to illustrate the trend in question: Gold to begin with, given the slump this metal has been in of late… We don’t have a time or a price point for gold going forward, but we do believe there are many signs of the yellow metal’s manipulation and sooner or later it will be time to buy once again. Biotech is sure to continue benefiting from what we have called the ‘Wall Street Party,’ a series of presumably arranged monetary and regulatory events that are boosting equity markets higher around the world and especially in the US – albeit not without volatility.”

Shanghai’s History a Tale of Successful Capitalism

“Under a regime of limited government, low taxes, and economic laissez faire, Shanghai became the most prosperous metropolis in all of Asia. The standard of living, including that of Chinese residents in the International Settlement and in surrounding Chinese-administered areas, was the highest in East Asia. It was this free market environment that created that Western-style skyline that in the 1930s was considered the Asian rival of New York. The city also became the focal point for the Chinese intellectual community as well as a Chinese cultural center – and one in which freedom of speech and press were protected for all, Westerner and Chinese alike.”

Bill Bonner: An Important Update on Our New ‘Trade of the Decade’

Bill-Bonner2

“The Nikkei 225 rose 57% for the year – the best year for the index since 1972.  Meanwhile, Japanese prime minister, Shinzo Abe… aided and abetted by new Bank of Japan governor Haruhiko Kuroda… goosed the annual inflation rate up to 1%. This had the effect of sending the yen down 15% against the dollar. Great for Japan’s exporters. Terrible for Japan’s fixed-income securities.  So, we made good money on both sides of the trade last year. By our rough, back-of-the-envelope ciphering, our ‘Trade of the Decade’ is up about 50% so far… with seven more years to run.  What will happen in those next seven years?”

Why Living in Singapore May (or May Not) Be Right for You

“Several people who have lived in Singapore longer than I insist that the cultural undercurrent is such that it is at a cusp of a revolution in creativity, with top international companies increasingly moving their R&D work and with world’s best universities setting up their operations there. Top leadership positions are increasingly taken up by locals.   Filing of personal income tax will likely take you a minute or two—only earnings are taxed. Your capital gains, dividends, and bank interest are yours to keep unmolested. Singapore doesn’t tax any overseas earnings either. Virtually everything dealing with the government is done on the Internet in an extremely efficient and friendly way.”

How Police Became a Standing Army

“America has been transformed into a country where police conduct something on the order of 50,000 SWAT raids a year.  The trend towards police militarization did not begin in earnest until the 1960s, when law enforcement struggled with civil unrest and cracked down on the drugs associated with political dissidents and the counterculture. It also crept in subtly through ‘indirect militarization,’ when domestic law enforcement agencies ‘take on more and more characteristics of an army.’ That phenomenon can largely be traced to longtime Los Angeles Chief of Police Daryl Gates, who founded America’s first SWAT team.”

Paul Craig Roberts: Washington Drives the World Toward War

withkitties_150_1202

“The fatal war for humanity is the war with Russia and China toward which Washington is driving the US and Washington’s NATO and Asian puppet states. There are a number of factors contributing to Washington’s drive toward the final war, but the overarching one is the doctrine of American exceptionalism.  According to this self-righteous doctrine, America is the indispensable country. What this means is that the US has been chosen by history to establish the hegemony of secular ‘democratic capitalism’ over the world. The primacy of this goal places the US government above traditional morality and above all law, both its own and international.”

Is War With China Inevitable?

“China has stopped future increases of dollar forex holdings, and has cut the use of the dollar in bilateral trade agreements with multiple countries.  Oil-producing nations are shifting alliances to China because it is now the world’s largest consumer of petroleum. And, China has clearly been preparing for this eventuality for years. So, given these circumstances, how can the U.S. government conceive of confrontation with the East? Challenging one’s creditors to a duel does not usually end well. At the very least, it would be economic suicide. But perhaps that is the point. Perhaps America is meant to make this seemingly idiotic leap.”
