Privacy Complaints Mount Over Phone Searches at U.S. Border Since 2011

“Smartphones and other personal electronics contain vastly more private information than suitcases.  The American Civil Liberties Union and the Electronic Frontier Foundation have filed a lawsuit in Boston arguing that a warrant should be required to search such devices at the border. Last week, the Trump administration asked a judge to dismiss the case. The lawsuit comes amid a surge in agents looking through — and sometimes copying data from — cellphones and laptops. Midway through fiscal year 2017, Customs and Border Protection was on pace to search 30,000 travelers’ electronics — more than tripling the annual number by that agency since 2015.”

“Youth unemployment in the eurozone has been stuck between 19% to 25% for the past eight years. In Spain and Greece, it’s north of 40%.  The bleak numbers underscore the uphill battle many young Europeans face in finding jobs that match their aspirations and education.  Legions of young people have grown frustrated. Many are still living at home, while others have left their families and moved to new countries in search of work.”

New US visa-free travel policy exports Homeland Security abroad

“The Trump administration put new requirements in place on Friday for the 38 countries participating in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program, including that they use U.S. counterterrorism data to screen travelers, officials said. The United States will also start assessing VWP countries on their safeguards against ‘insider threats’ at their airports, especially those with direct flights to the United States, officials said.”

How occupational licensing laws inhibit interstate mobility

“The new study adds to the already substantial evidence indicating that licensing laws are a major obstacle to geographic mobility, particularly for poor and lower-middle class people seeking to move to areas with greater opportunity. We have gotten to the point where some 30 percent of Americans have to have licenses to legally work in their respective fields, including even some states that license florists and tour guides. The evidence also suggests that most of these laws do far more to suppress competition than protect consumers.”

These Guys Want to Lend You Money Against Your Bitcoin

“Startups with names like Salt Lending, Nebeus, CoinLoan and EthLend are diving into the breach. Some lend — or plan to lend — directly, while others help borrowers get financing from third parties. Terms can be onerous compared with traditional loans. But the market is potentially huge.  Someone looking to tap $100,000 in cash would probably need to put up $200,000 of bitcoin as collateral, and pay 12 percent to 20 percent in interest a year, according to David Lechner, the chief financial officer at Salt, which has arranged dozens of loans.”

Double standard: Mugabe ‘was leasing out land to whites’, says report

“As recently as late October, Mugabe said black owners who invited whites back to rent and work seized fields would lose their farms.  But the Zimbabwe Independent reports that the former first family was doing exactly that: leasing out part of Mazowe Citrus Estate to a company in which some of the main shareholders were white.”

“The defect that causes the neurodegenerative disease Huntington’s has been corrected in patients for the first time, the BBC has learned.  An experimental drug, injected into spinal fluid, safely lowered levels of toxic proteins in the brain.  The research team, at University College London, say there is now hope the deadly disease can be stopped.  Experts say it could be the biggest breakthrough in neurodegenerative diseases for 50 years.”

Nasdaq plans bitcoin futures contract in 2018, joining CME and CBOE

“Nasdaq Inc plans to launch a futures contract based on bitcoin in 2018, making it the third exchange operator to plan U.S. derivatives contracts linked to the digital currency, a source with knowledge of the matter said on Wednesday.  CME Group, the world’s largest derivatives exchange, and CBOE Holdings, have both said they plan to launch futures products based on bitcoin this year, pending regulatory approval, helping fuel the crypto-currency’s rally.  While Nasdaq does not have a hard date set for its product, the transatlantic exchange operator has offered an exchange-traded note based on bitcoin on its Stockholm exchange since 2015.”
