Alfred McCoy: The Future of the American Empire

“Alfred McCoy was a young rebel academic who waded into the war zone in Southeast Asia to investigate the relationship between the CIA, crime syndicates, and local drug lords. The result, which the Agency tried unsuccessfully to suppress, was his classic The Politics of Heroin: CIA Complicity in the Global Drug Trade. In the 45 years since, McCoy has consistently probed the underside of American global power, analyzing how the United States uses covert interventions, local proxies, torture, and worldwide surveillance to maintain its global empire.”

Georgia high schoolers win $3M settlement over fruitless drug sweep

“Each Worth County High School student will receive between $1,000 and $6,000, but students who attorneys say suffered more invasive violations will receive higher amounts.  Hobby’s attorney, Raleigh Rollins, said the settlement will be paid through the county’s insurance policy rather than directly from public funds.”

Congress poised to jam through reauthorization of mass surveillance

“The current authorization for Section 702 expires on December 31, and it’s the first time Congress has faced this reauthorization since Edward Snowden’s earth-shattering disclosures about the National Security Agency’s mass surveillance apparatus. Committees in the Senate and House have competing proposals to reauthorize the program. But with the clock running out, Congress once again appears to be poised to jam through reauthorization.”

US, S. Korea to stage massive air exercise in show of force against N. Korea

“The massive five-day annual exercise comes as Washington pushes what President Donald Trump has called a ‘maximum pressure campaign’ against Pyongyang over its nuclear programme.  The exercise, named Vigilant Ace, starts on December 4 with 12,000 US personnel and an unspecified number of South Korean airmen flying more than 230 aircraft at eight US and South Korean military bases.”

Iran supreme leader is ‘new Hitler’ says Saudi crown prince

“Saudi Arabia’s crown prince this week called Iran’s supreme leader the ‘new Hitler of the Middle East.’  Salman also told The New York Times the war in Yemen was ‘going in its favor.’ The war, which has raged since 2015, has pitted a Saudi-led coalition backed by the U.S. against the Houthi rebels and forces loyal to Yemen’s ousted president. The war has left over 10,000 people dead, driven 3 million from their homes and destroyed the country’s already fragile infrastructure.”

Abject cruelty: Trump administration deporting 60,000 Haitians

“There is no particular need –aside from red meat for the anti-immigrant base — to expel these law-abiding people who have made their home here for as long as seven years. Florida’s unemployment rate of 4.1  percent does not suggest that they have displaced U.S.-born workers. And the notion that these people can return to Haiti to enjoy a decent life is belied by the facts on the ground there. The lack of humanity is evident in the administration’s anti-family action. The hardship on those Haitians is immense, while the ‘benefit’ to the United States is nonexistent.”

Saudi Arabia agrees to ease Yemen blockade, facing mass starvation warnings

“Around seven million people are living on the brink of famine and four million have no access to clean water.  Save the Children estimates that even before the blockade began around 130 children were dying each day and that more than 50,000 will have died by the end of 2017.  The Saudi-led military coalition has also been bombing the Houthis for more than two years in support of the internationally-recognised Yemeni government, but there is no end in sight to the fighting.  Both the US and UK have supported the Saudi-led coalition with logistics and intelligence, despite accusations that the coalition was guilty of war crimes for bombing civilian targets.”

These Doomsday Preppers Are Starting to Switch From Gold to Bitcoin

“‘Buy bitcoin’ is now a more popular search phrase than ‘buy gold’ on Google.  The buzz is starting to impinge on gold’s role as a store of value especially since, like the precious metal, there’s a finite supply of bitcoin, which proponents say gives it anti-inflationary qualities. Sales of gold coins from the U.S. Mint slid to a decade low in the first three quarters months of 2017.”

“Covered deposits no longer need to be protected, according to the European Central Bank (ECB), which has proposed this month to stop withdrawals when a bank is on the verge of failing. It has suggested the current €100,000 (£85,000) deposit level currently protected in the event of a bail-in would no longer be available.”

Purged Saudi royals must cough up 70% of their wealth to be freed

“Riyadh seems to have found the way to curb the budget deficit caused by lower oil prices. As the Financial Times report, Saudi officials are offering the arrested royals a deal – pay up to 70 percent of your wealth and go free.  The Saudi government could appropriate hundreds of billions of dollars from the arrested to refill depleted state reserves, according to the media.”
