U.S. Acknowledges Killing 4 Americans in Drone Strikes

EPJ13

“The Obama administration on Wednesday formally acknowledged that the U.S. had killed four American citizens in drone strikes in Yemen and Pakistan. In a letter to Congressional leaders, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. disclosed that the administration had deliberately killed Anwar al-Awlaki, a radical Muslim cleric who was killed in a drone strike in September 2011 in Yemen. The letter also said that the United States had killed three other Americans: Samir Khan, who was killed in the same strike; Mr. Awlaki’s son Abdulrahman al-Awlaki, who was also killed in Yemen; and Jude Mohammed, who was killed in a strike in Pakistan.”

Pentagon Unilaterally Grants Itself Authority Over ‘Civil Disturbances’

“The lines blurred even further Monday as a new dynamic was introduced to the militarization of domestic law enforcement. By making a few subtle changes to a regulation in the U.S. Code titled ‘Defense Support of Civilian Law Enforcement Agencies’ the military has quietly granted itself the ability to police the streets without obtaining prior local or state consent, upending a precedent that has been in place for more than two centuries. The most objectionable aspect of the regulatory change is the inclusion of vague language that permits military intervention in the event of ‘civil disturbances.'”

Obamacare: Taxpayers Must Report Personal Health ID Info to IRS

“When Obamacare’s individual mandate takes effect in 2014, all Americans who file income tax returns must complete an additional IRS tax form.  The new form will require disclosure of a taxpayer’s personal identifying health information in order to determine compliance with the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate.  As confirmed by IRS testimony to the tax-writing House Committee on Ways and Means, ‘taxpayers will file their tax returns reporting their health insurance coverage, and/or making a payment’.”

Wall Street hires Washington

“The financial industry has long been a draw for former political operatives seeking a bigger paycheck and New York lifestyle. But with the big banks now under constant assault from reformers, regulators and some members of Congress, the flow of top talent from Washington to Wall Street has become a small flood. Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley will soon have top-level executives with the ear of the CEO who once occupied senior jobs in the White House and the U.S. Treasury. Other banks including Citigroup, Credit Suisse and JPMorgan Chase also have staffed up with former political and regulatory officials.”

Sudan government shuts down local TEDx conference

“Sudan’s security service on Saturday ordered the closure of a community forum, one of the independently run TEDx events held around the world, even though it was non-political, the organiser said.  ‘They unplugged the electricity,’ Anwar Dafa-Alla, who founded Sudan’s version of TEDx two years ago, told AFP. He said almost 1,000 people were attending the event at a luxury Khartoum hotel when officials stopped it before it was even half finished.  The state minister of information and culture, Mustafa Tirab, said that the government ‘will do our level best to provide freedom of expression and freedom of speech for all those who are inside Sudan’.”

Next to Use 3-D Printing: Your Surgeon

“Surgeons are finding industrial 3-D printers to be a lifesaver on the operating table. This technology, also known as additive manufacturing, has long produced prototypes of jewelry, electronics and car parts. But now these industrial printers are able to construct personalized copies of livers and kidneys, one ultrathin layer at a time. The medical field in particular is expected to benefit greatly from 3-D printing. Scientists are working on ways to print embryonic stem cells and living human tissue with the aim to produce body parts that can be directly attached to or implanted in the body.”

The Startup Yahoo Won’t Be Buying

“Stamped, On The Air, SnipIt, Jybe, Alike and Summly:  Yahoo’s six acquisitions in recent months under Marissa Mayer’s new leadership. The French video-sharing platform Dailymotion was to have been the seventh. Over 20 million videos, 112 million monthly unique visitors, a valuation around $300 million: a crown jewel for Mayer’s content strategy and an inspiring success story for French tech entrepreneurs. But it won’t be.  Yahoo backed out of its deal to buy 75% of the company from main owner Orange/France Telecom after French Industry Minister Arnaud Montebourg intervened to stop the sale.”

Danes Rethink a Welfare State Ample to a Fault

“While much of southern Europe has been racked by strikes and protests as its creditors force austerity measures, Denmark still has a coveted AAA bond rating.   But Denmark’s long-term outlook is troubling. The population is aging, and in many regions of the country people without jobs now outnumber those with them.   Some of that is a result of a depressed economy. But many experts say a more basic problem is the proportion of Danes who are not participating in the work force at all — be they dawdling university students, young pensioners or welfare recipients like Carina who lean on hefty government support.”

Rick Steves: Well Traveled

“What started out as a small European tour outfit has, over the years, grown into an enterprise of some 80 employees organizing tours, writing guidebooks, and producing the public television series and radio programs that make Rick Steves a welcome guest in millions of American homes.  Having just gotten back from another day at the office, the author of Travel as a Political Act carefully considers the ounce of marijuana procured for this photo shoot as he plays selections from Les Miserables on the baby grand he’s owned since the days when he made his living as a piano teacher.”

Botnet fraud wreaking havoc on advertisers: report

“Security researchers have discovered a botnet they have dubbed ‘Chameleon’ which they calculate is costing display advertisers around $6m (£3.9m) per month by falsely viewing billions of pages and adverts on about 200 sites owned by a small group of publishers.  The discovery points to widespread fraud in which adverts are clicked among networks of sites to generate money for sites and ad networks – though it is still unclear whether it is one or more publishers, or one or more ad networks which supply ads to the sites, which are to blame for the fraud. The botnet consists of at least 120,000 subverted Windows machines, 95% of them located inside the US.”
