U.S. and China announce cybersecurity collaboration amid hacking dispute

“China and the US, which are embroiled in a bitter dispute over hacking, have agreed to set up a cybersecurity working group, US Secretary of State John Kerry said on Saturday. ‘All of us, every nation, has an interest in protecting its people, protecting its rights, protecting its infrastructure,’ he told reporters on a visit to Beijing. ‘Cybersecurity affects everybody,’ he said. ‘It affects airplanes in the sky, trains on their tracks, it affects the flow of water through dams, it affects transportation networks, power plants, it affects the financial sector, banks, financial transactions. So we are going to work immediately on an accelerated basis on cyber.'”

UK’s secret Mid-East internet surveillance base is revealed in Edward Snowden leaks

“Britain runs a secret internet-monitoring station in the Middle East to intercept and process vast quantities of emails, telephone calls and web traffic on behalf of Western intelligence agencies, The Independent has learnt. The station is able to tap into and extract data from the underwater fibre-optic cables passing through the region. The information is then processed for intelligence and passed to GCHQ in Cheltenham and shared with the National Security Agency (NSA) in the United States. The Government claims the station is a key element in the West’s ‘war on terror’ and provides a vital ‘early warning’ system for potential attacks around the world.”

German jailed for Julius Bär bank data theft

“A German citizen who began working as a contractor for the Zurich-based bank in 2005, admitted that he had gathered information about the bank’s clients, including their names, addresses and account numbers, between October and December 2011. He had then compiled a list of German clients with assets of more than 100,000 euros, Swiss francs, British pounds or dollars, and passed it on to a retired German tax inspector. In exchange, he had been set to receive €1.1 million euros. He told the court he had planned to use part of his compensation to pay off his own back-tax debt to German authorities.”

The Impending Collapse of the Global “Bernanke Bubble”

The-Circle-Bastiat-311

“In the past few months, the Turkish lira has depreciated by 4.5% against the dollar, while its dollar-denominated debt stands at $172 billion or 22% of its GDP. Goldman Sachs forecasts a further 15% fall in the Turkish lira, spurring a financial crisis as it becomes more and more expensive to buy dollars to service these loans, most of which are short term. Furthermore, ‘some of the biggest beneficiaries of the Fed’s largess were . . . among the politically connected elite in emerging nations like Turkey, where vanity towers, glitzy shopping malls and even grander projects to come have become representative of the nation’s new dynamism.'”

Maryland: Motorist Rights Group Sues Over Camera Data

“The town eventually responded in June 2012, demanding that Ely pay a schedule of fees for the involvement of various town employees, including $200 an hour for the town attorney. The total cost to access the documents was left open-ended. Ely is not seeking obscure or difficult to obtain records. Instead, he wants the calibration certificates and daily setup logs that must be ‘kept on file’ under the state’s speed camera authorization statute. Already, two localities have been caught violating state law in allowing a private company to operate cameras without documenting the calibrations, as required.”

Bradley Manning sentenced to 35 years in prison

“Army Private First Class Bradley Manning was sentenced on Wednesday morning to 35 years in prison for leaking classified documents via WikiLeaks, The Guardian reported. Military prosecutors asked Judge Colonel Denise Lind on Monday for a 60-year sentence for Manning, the second reduction from a maximum sentence of 136 years in prison, following Lind paring that to 90 years on August 6.  Based on a 35-year sentence, Davis wrote, Manning will ‘likely serve about 8 to 8.5 yrs more in confinement and be out by the time he’s 33 or 34.'”

Fordlandia: Henry Ford’s Amazon Dystopia

“In 1927, the American industrialist Henry Ford began building a private city—Fordlandia—in the depths of the Brazilian Amazon forest. His company had won title to nearly 2.5 million acres of land—over 3,800 square miles—for a planned rubber plantation and company town. Ford spent over $20 million (about $300 million in today’s dollars) putting in roads, water and power systems, rail lines, factories, offices, medical facilities, homes, schools, and stores.  Thousands of workers and their families flocked to Fordlandia. Soon, however, waves of rioting, looting, and burning roiled the city. Ford abandoned his namesake in 1945, leaving it to rot in the jungle.”

Declassified intelligence reveals U.S.-India Cold War cooperation on U2 spy missions

“A declassified American intelligence report on the use of U-2 spy planes has shed new light on cooperation between the United States and India during the Cold War. The document traced the role of the US in monitoring Chinese incursions into India, at the request of New Delhi, which enjoyed a close relationship with the Soviet Union. Following the Sino-Indian conflict of October 1962, when China launched surprise attacks against Indian frontier forces, ‘the Indian government appealed to the United States for military aid,’ according to CIA historians who traced the events.  India allowed the United States to build a base in India for the secret spy planes.”
