Saudi Arabia Must Face Sept. 11 Victims in Revived Suit

“Lawsuits claiming Saudi Arabia aided al-Qaeda and should be held liable for the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack was revived by a U.S. appeals court in a decision that allows victims and their families another chance to seek compensation from the kingdom.  The U.S. Court of Appeals in New York yesterday said a lower-court judge ‘rested on an error of law’ in rejecting a request to reopen the cases against the country’s government and an affiliated charity.  Michael Kellogg, a lawyer for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, didn’t immediately return a call yesterday seeking comment on the ruling.”

In America, many if not most people still trust the government enough to believe in reform rather than in the quiet revolution of saying ‘no.’ They still listen to the mainstream media, no matter how bitterly they complain about it. Nothing else can explain why people surrender their liberty and money in return for broken and retreaded promises. Even if America is a police state, it’s not intuitively obvious how far the process has progressed. All states violate rights. When does one become totalitarian?”

NSA pushed 9/11 as key ‘sound bite’ to justify surveillance

Invoking the events of 9/11 to justify the controversial NSA programs, which have caused major diplomatic fallout around the world, was the top item on the talking points that agency officials were encouraged to use.”

The ordinances vary from city to city, but certain elements are common: to keep their rental licenses, landlords are encouraged or required to perform criminal background checks on rental applicants; they are encouraged or required to use a ‘crime-free lease,’ by which any crime on the premises breaks the contract — even if the tenant was a victim and did nothing more than call the police; furthermore, the police can demand eviction of a ‘nuisance’ tenant, and landlords who do not comply can be repeatedly fined or worse. In some cities, landlords can also be forced to pay the cost of police visits.”
