U.S. to force companies to disclose if electronic materials come from war-torn countries

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/congorefugees-flickruserbabasteve.jpg

[Truth is for everyone else, naturally.  But where does SEC get this authority?]  “The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) voted Wednesday to force corporations to disclose whether they use minerals like tantalum, tin, gold and tungsten purchased from African conflict zones in and around the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).   So-called ‘conflict minerals’ are seen as fueling much of the fighting in the DRC, with government troops and local militias locked in bitter struggle to control illicit mining operations.”

State Department condemns Zimbabwe raids on LGBT rights group

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/photo_1337867840616-1-0-615x345.jpg

[The usual zero-credibility imperial posturing.]  “The United States on Thursday condemned Zimbabwe over raids on the offices of a gay rights group and urged authorities to end a ‘pattern of abuse’ against civil society.  ‘We are deeply concerned when security forces become an instrument of political violence used against citizens exercising their democratic rights. We call upon the government of Zimbabwe to end this pattern of abuse and to eradicate the culture of impunity that allows members of the security sector to continue to violate the rights of the Zimbabwean people,’ she said.”

China’s Strategy In Africa Benefits Both

“The total trade volume between China and Africa hit a record high of 166.3 billion US dollars in 2011, compared to only 10 billion in 2000. By April this year, China’s total direct investment in Africa reached 15.3 billion US dollars, about 30 times the figure ten years ago.  More than 2000 Chinese enterprises have their investments or businesses in 50 African countries. The coordination in international affairs between China and Africa has been much closer, with the aim of upholding the common interests of developing countries and establishing the new international political and economic order.”

Reality Check: The African Region that Western Elites have Subjected to War Is Now Larger than the Entire US

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/the-daily-bell-top-logo310.jpg

“The entire upper half of Africa from the Ivory Coast to Somalia has been set aflame with violence and war. The geographical scale is staggering.  What has been set in motion is sure to destabilize Africa and the Middle East for decades to come.  Add up all the various states at the crest of Africa that have been either destabilized or subjected to a phony ‘youth rebellion’ and you end up with a geographical space as large or larger than the United States (maybe with Alaska thrown in).  Yes, that’s the size of real estate that’s been subjected directly to violence and regime change within the past TWO years!”

UN attempts to install another central government in Somalia

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/somaliamarket-afp6.jpg

“Somalia’s newly appointed legislature will elect the country’s next president Monday, in a fresh bid to end two decades of unstable central government, completing a complex process set in motion through a UN-backed agreement aimed at ending eight years of rule by Somalia’s graft-riddled, Western-backed Transitional Federal Government (TFG).  With several previous attempts at installing a new central government ending in failure, the international community has done everything to ensure that this latest deadline of August 20 succeeds.”

Zimbabwe power cuts to persist for 10 years

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/photo_1343394582678-1-01.jpg

“Energy-starved Zimbabwe will suffer longer and more frequent power shortages for the next 10 years, a senior official said Friday.  The country’s power utility will extend blackouts until it can boost capacity.  Due to ageing equipment, power generation is often disrupted following breakdowns. In most cases, the generators operate below capacity. In recent months, Zimbabwe could only afford to import 25 megawatts from nearby countries after major electricity suppliers in the region turned off the switches over non-payment of dues.” [If you really want to destroy something useful, put the government in charge of it.]

Sierra Leone plans gold tax cut to curb smuggling

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/mineweblogo1.jpg

“Sierra Leone plans to cut taxes on gold produced by small, individual miners nearly in half to reduce smuggling and boost exports, a year after the West African state did the same for diamonds, a top mining official told Reuters on Monday.  The move would undo part of a mining law drawn up in 2009 and backed by the International Monetary Fund. The law was meant to increase government revenue in the war-scarred country but instead backfired by triggering a slide in official exports.” [Sometimes third-world politicians are indeed smarter than Yale graduates…]

Missing Cameroon athletes may be looking for ‘greener pastures’

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/120807075343-serge-ambomo-07-08-story-top.jpg

“The seven missing in London.  That’s what the headlines in the West African nation of Cameroon call the athletes who walked away from the Olympic village at the London Games.  While the Cameroon Olympic delegation has stopped short of saying the athletes planned to defect, at least one member of the country’s national Olympic committee believes it’s more than likely.  Since the 1996 Games in Atlanta, dozens of athletes from Cameroon have defected.  Cameroon, with a population of about 20 million, is one of the world’s poorest nations, according to the International Monetary Fund.”
