Jeffrey Tucker, Porcfest: Crowd Sourcing Liberty

“Held in a park beneath the mountains of New Hampshire, it has no big financial backers, no massive marketing apparatus, and no big institutional exhibitors. It has grown over the years through reputation alone. It mixes fun with learning with entrepreneurship.  It never set out to do anything but provide a venue for camping and socializing in the spirit of celebration. It is affordable, accessible to everyone, and everyone does come: people from all religions, classes, professions, outlooks. Now it has become a beautiful zone of creative freedom, an experiment in what it means to take liberty out of the idea stage into real action.”

Jeffrey Tucker: The Deeply Tragic Life Sentencing of Ross Ulbricht

“If you are a tenured professor performing artificial trading experiments in a classroom and publishing your results in expensive journals, you are toasted as a genius and sometimes given prestigious prizes. If you innovate with venture capital funding and the backing of large tech firms, you are rewarded with riches and fame. But if you are a quiet geek who creates a more realistic experiment online, one that actually benefits humanity, and never sought funding from any establishment source, you are swept up in a sting operation and imprisoned for life.  As for the online markets themselves, the jailing of Ross does nothing to stop them. They are now larger than ever.”

101 Reasons: Liberty Lives in New Hampshire (Full Length Film)

“‘101 Reasons: Liberty Lives in New Hampshire’ is a documentary adaptation of the Free State Project’s list of 101 Reasons to Move to New Hampshire, which was written in 2002 by Michele Dumas. The FSP is an effort to move 20,000 liberty-minded people to a low populated state that has an existing pro-freedom culture. In 2003, participants of the FSP voted for the ‘Live Free or Die’ state, New Hampshire, as its destination. For over 12 years the 101 Reasons list has helped inspire thousands of activists and entrepreneurs to sign up for the FSP and continue New Hampshire’s reputation as a beacon for liberty.”

Bankrupt California city facing legalizing marijuana for revenue

“The bankrupt California city of San Bernardino has a new idea for raising revenue – legalize medical marijuana.  Ironically, the plan was spurred by concerns about not having enough resources to crack down on the illegal medical marijuana dealers springing up all over town.  So the city is now looking at legalizing the sellers, and using tax proceeds to enforce the regulations.  Police have reported as many as 20 illegal storefronts in town at any given time, said the city attorney. ‘We have in this city a proliferation – and a lot of cities in California are experiencing it – of illegal medical marijuana dispensaries. These people are defiant and they are opening up these things right and left.'”

Withdrawing Political Legitimacy

“The World Wide Web is the greatest idea-smuggling network in history. The question is: Which smuggling operations will put the Web to its most productive uses?  My statement of faith is this: not the state.  Smuggling can lead to secession. It can lead to a withdrawal of faith and hope in the messianic state. It can lead to institutional alternatives to the messianic state.  Example: online education as a substitute for tax-funded education. This is technically possible today. At some point, community by community, there will be a tipping point.  The mark of this tipping point will be this: the inability of local governments to get bond issues passed, despite the threatened loss of federal matching funds.”

A Libertarian Testing Ground For Bitcoin, 3D Printers, and Drones

“I discovered that this isolated group has fully adopted Bitcoin, and that it’s extremely enthusiastic about other ‘freedom-enhancing’ technologies such as 3D-printers and encryption. Everyone I met in the Project owned Bitcoin and was willing to accept it for goods and services. Of the couple thousand people living there, at least seven own 3D-printers. Though the idea originally was to get a critical mass to influence the political process, many in the movement now feel that the freedoms they want may be better realized through technology that routes around the government rather than engaging it directly.”

‘Dark Wallet’ wants to make Bitcoin even harder to trace

“Dark Wallet is a browser app for bitcoin payments that uses both encryption and CoinJoin technology.  CoinJoin essentially mixes multiple bitcoin transactions, selected at random, as one transfer of funds and conceals the original payers.  Dark Wallet offers anonymous transactions by default.  The political orientation of Dark Wallet’s backers unSystem attracted attention to the app when it was launched on the Indiegogo crowdfunding website, where it raised more than $52,000 last December.  ‘Bitcoin is the next battle ground in the fight against supranational political domination,’ wrote the backers, including Cody Wilson, known for creating the world’s first 3D-printed gun.”

Chris Odom on OpenTransactions

“Chris Odom, better known as Fellow Traveler, is the creator of the Open Transactions system. The utility of a system like Open Transactions recently clicked for me, which is a little funny because I’ve known about it for two years and actually interviewed Chris in 2013 on the topic. Once the lightbulb switched on I saw a little of what our future might look like with interoperable cryptocurrencies minus the centralized exchanges.”
