Destroyer of Mankind Now a Museum Piece

“What was just a few months ago a backyard project by an ‘insurrectionist’ is now considered so valuable it has earned a spot in a well-known British art museum.  Earlier this week, London’s Victoria & Albert Museum of Art and Design announced that it’s buying two of the original ‘Liberator’ printed guns from Cody Wilson of Defense Distributed, Forbes reports. The museum will display the guns during its ongoing Design Festival. No price has been disclosed. The guns was designed by Wilson and constructed from parts made on a 3D printer, horrifying government officials who quickly moved to prohibit Wilson from sharing the plans on his website. The files went viral instead.”

“Anyone can download and run Tor, exchange some dollars or euros for the digital currency Bitcoin and go shopping on Silk Road for drugs that are vacuum-sealed and discreetly mailed via the U.S. Postal Service.  By one measure, Roberts’ eBay-like service was grossing $1.2 million a month in the first half of 2012. Since then the site has doubled its product listings, and revenue now hits an annual run-rate of $30 million to $45 million by FORBES’ estimate. One analysis found that Silk Road received around 60,000 visits a day, mostly users seeking to buy or sell drugs, along with other illicit items including unregulated cigarettes and forged documents.”

We showed off a self service kiosk that can save digital copies of house and apartment keys and then reproduce the physical keys when someone loses them or gets locked out. After our demonstration, one audience member asked if it would be used by the NSA to spy on people. My coworker told him not to worry because our CTO is an anarchist, which resulted in a round of applause. At the time, it was surprising how much credibility being an anarchist brought in that context. Yet, in retrospect it should have been obvious.”
