What U.S. citizens weren’t told about the atomic bombing of Japan

“Newborn death rates skyrocketed in the nine months after the bombing: 43% of pregnancies in which the fetus was exposed within a quarter-mile of the hypocenter ended in spontaneous abortion, stillbirth or infant death. Young mothers giving birth in the ruins did not know it yet, but even those infants who survived would face severe physical and mental disabilities. For years, tens of thousands of hibakusha (‘atomic bomb-affected people’) suffered agonizing radiation-related illnesses. Many died. Meanwhile, Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s occupation press code censored Japanese news accounts, personal testimonies, photographs and scientific research on the survivors’ conditions.”

Homeland Security prompted panic withdrawals that sank Mt. Gox

“The U.S. Department of Homeland Security seized Mt. Gox assets of around $5 million kept in U.S. bank accounts around May 2013, saying it was ineligible to operate fund transfer services in the United States.  The decision prompted clients in the United States to rush to withdraw money entrusted to Mt. Gox.  By August that year, the company appears to have incurred several billion yen in losses, leading liabilities to surpass its assets and capital on its balance sheet.  The police are also investigating whether Karpeles consolidated customer and corporate funds in a bank account held by the company and embezzled around ¥1.1 billion.”

Mt Gox CEO Mark Karpeles Arrested in Japan

“Police arrested Mt Gox CEO Mark Karpeles today in Japan on allegations that he manipulated volume on the then-market leading bitcoin exchange platform prior to its 2014 collapse.  The formal action from the Tokyo Metropolitan Police follows escalating reports this week that Karpeles was facing criminal charges for fraud and embezzlement, and comes more than a year after Mt Gox first filed for bankruptcy protection in the US and Japan.  The news source stated that Karpeles has not yet been charged with any crimes, meaning he could be detained for up to 23 days before a formal charge without the possibility of bail.”

Tokyo Court: Bitcoin Not Subject to Ownership

“Tokyo’s District Court has ruled that bitcoin is ‘not subject to ownership’, with a judge informing a plaintiff he could not claim for bitcoins lost in the Mt Gox collapse.  Judge Masumi Kurachi stated that, due to their intangible nature and reliance on third parties, bitcoins cannot be covered under existing law.  Kurachi’s comments, reported by The Japan Times, came during a lawsuit bought against bankrupt bitcoin exchange Mt Gox by an unnamed Kyoto resident.  Representing himself in court, the plaintiff had demanded repayment of 458 bitcoins, today worth $128,144, that were held in his account when the exchange shuttered last year.”

Toyota Camry Tops Ford F-150 as the Most American Made Car

“Cars with at least 75 percent domestic content are becoming an endangered species, and for the first time in the American-Made Index’s nine-year history, the list has fewer than 10 cars.  The Toyota Camry took the top spot this year, as 2014’s top vehicle — the Ford F-150 — fell below 75 percent in domestic-parts content with its 2015 model-year redesign.  It’s not that automakers are slowing U.S. production. If anything, the opposite is true: Excluding heavy-duty trucks and commercial vehicles, automakers assemble 101 models in this country for the 2015 model year, from Chevrolet sedans to BMW SUVs. What is shrinking is the percent of overall domestic-parts content.”

China and Russia Lay Foundation for Massive Economic Cooperation

“Russian and Chinese leaders are considering combining their two countries’ regional economic projects — the Eurasian Economic Union and the Silk Road Economic Belt, respectively.  While meeting at a two-day summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Ufa, Russia, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping are reportedly discussing a framework that would merge China’s multi-billion dollar network of roads, railways, and pipelines through Central Asia with the Eurasian Union, the post-Soviet economic bloc that includes Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia.”

Investing In China’s New Silk Road

“What happened to the original Silk Road?  It slammed closed under the rule of Mao Zedong and his Cultural Revolution. He closed all transport to the west.  That’s why, even today, most exports from China to the West travel by container ship — a trip of over 9,500 miles, crossing 15 different seas.  It’s a little crazy if you think about it. Because China is part of the Eurasian landmass and has overland access to all of continental Asia, Europe and even the Middle East.  Moving freight overland instead of by sea would be incredibly more efficient.  Consider that for a minute. How things might change if China — arguably the world’s largest economy now — had easier access to the rest of Asia and Europe.”

Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine, and Lithuania Trip Report

“Before the end of the spring semester, I couldn’t bear the thought of spending the three weeks between the end of my junior year and the start of my summer internship bumming around at home, so I took Google Flights to the task to find the furthest place I could get away from Pittsburgh at the lowest cost per mile.  The result? A four-country getaway and a story of a lifetime.”

Brunei Darussalam looks to a new stock bourse to diversify economy

“Plans to launch a stock exchange in Brunei Darussalam by 2017 will bolster its capital markets in line with plans for regional market integration as well as aid the broader drive to diversify its economy away from dependence on oil and gas.  Brunei Darussalam and Myanmar are the last two Asean members without a stock exchange, but this is set to change shortly following Myanmar’s announcement that it intends to launch a bourse later this year.  Business leaders have welcomed the move, with around 12 major domestic firms potential candidates to list on the exchange.”
