US Now Admits It Is Funding “Occupy Central” In Hong Kong

“Just as the US admitted shortly after the so-called ‘Arab Spring’ began spreading chaos across the Middle East that it had fully funded, trained, and equipped both mob leaders and heavily armed terrorists years in advance, it is now admitted that the US State Department through a myriad of organizations and NGOs is behind the so-called ‘Occupy Central‘ protests in Hong Kong.  The very concept of the United States ‘promoting democracy’ is scandalous when considering it is embroiled in an invasive global surveillance scandal, guilty of prosecuting one unpopular war after another, and brutalizing and abusing its own citizens at home with militarized police.”

Jim Rogers says Korea to unify within 5 years

“I wanted to go to Rason because that is where the Russians just rebuilt the railroad across Siberia into Rason and that is where they are rebuilding the port. Rason is going to become the most important port in Asia in the next decade or two. If you put goods on the train in Rason, they get to Berlin two weeks earlier [than the current alternative]. Putin knows this, the Koreans know this, the Chinese just put in a railroad across China and Kazakhstan to get things to Europe much faster so geography is changing as we speak. You wouldn’t know it if you watch (American TV).  I went to the market, you could get anything. Stuff that I don’t even have myself.”

Go East, Canadian Crude

“Canada’s west coast should be the point of departure for liquefied natural gas (LNG) and crude oil destined for Asia. But given the ongoing political clown show in British Columbia, Alberta-based producers are starting to look east as well.  Earlier this week Canadian oil major Suncor Energy Inc transported 700,000 barrels of Western Canada Select (WCS) crude by rail to a port near Montreal. From there, it will be shipped to Italy, via the Saint Lawrence River, which ultimately connects with the Atlantic Ocean. Next month, Enbridge Inc is expected to complete the reversal of its Line 9B pipeline, bringing up to 300,000 more barrels a day to the Saint Lawrence.”

Google launches $105 Android One; eyes India smartphone boom

“Google Inc launched in India on Monday a $105 smartphone, the first device from its ‘Android One’ initiative which is aimed at boosting sales in key emerging markets through cheaper prices and better quality software.  The Mountain View-Based company tied up with Indian handset makers Micromax, Karbonn and Spice Mobiles to launch the 6,399 rupees phone, which is powered by Google’s operating system and targets the booming low-cost segment of the world’s fastest growing smartphone market.  After launching in India, Google said it plans to expand Android One to Indonesia, Philippines and other South Asian countries by the end of 2014 and in more countries in 2015.”

Japan’s economy shrinks after sales tax hike

“Japan’s economy contracted by an annualised 6.8% in the second quarter of the year, the biggest fall since 2011 when it was devastated by an earthquake and tsunami.  The official gross domestic product (GDP) figure though was smaller than the 7.1% drop economists expected.  The shrinkage was largely in response to a government sales tax, which held back consumer spending.  Japan’s sales tax rose from 5% to 8% in April.  On a quarterly basis, the economy contracted 1.7% in the second quarter after a 1.5% rise in the first three months. Private consumption, which makes up 60% of economic activity, was 5% down on the previous quarter.”

Abe’s party loses local vote after Japan’s security policy shift

“The election in the western prefecture of Shiga was the first high-profile poll since Mr Abe’s cabinet adopted a resolution ending the ban on exercising ‘collective self-defence’, or aiding a friendly country under attack – the most dramatic change in Japanese security policy in decades.  Mr Abe has argued the change is needed to cope with a tough security environment, but the move has stirred angst among many voters wary of entanglement in foreign wars and worried that Japan’s post-war pacifist constitution is being gutted. Tokyo and Beijing have long been at odds over territorial claims and Japan’s military record before the end of the World War II.”

Teddy Roosevelt and the Road to Pearl Harbor [2009]

“Historian James Bradley had a fascinating op-ed in yesterday’s New York Times tracing the origins of Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor back to the foreign policy of President Theodore Roosevelt, who famously intervened in the Russo-Japanese War in 1905 and earned himself a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. Yet as Bradley notes, Roosevelt was secretly acting on Japan’s behalf, or as he wrote to his son, ‘not merely with her approval but with her expressed desire.’ Following that, Roosevelt actively encouraged Japan to emulate America’s recent imperial expansion, though the results would prove disastrous in the long-term.”

Ex-U.S. officials hail Japan’s decision on collective self-defense

“Former U.S. policymakers on Monday welcomed a July 1 decision by the Cabinet of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to allow Japan to exercise the right to collective self-defense, saying it will invigorate the Japan-U.S. alliance and create firmer deterrence against China’s military buildup and territorial ambitions. ‘Together, the United States and Japan present a partnership that can prevent China from achieving its territorial ambitions through military force,’ it says.  The report calls for integrating China into ‘a rule-based Asia Pacific community’ so as to achieve a more peaceful and prosperous Asia-Pacific region.”

Shining the Spotlight on Solar Gains

“Asia accounts for nearly 90 percent of global production of solar PV modules, with China producing 67 percent of the world total. A recent Bloomberg News story noted that solar PV installations are expected to grow by as much as 29% this year, and by more than 50% over the next two years. This is expected to reverse a glut of solar PV manufacturing capacity that has persisted for the past two years. In fact, the solar PV industry is expecting a possible shortage of panels for the first time since 2006, which will benefit the bottom lines of the largest solar PV makers. In 2013, new capacity additions of solar PV surpassed wind power capacity additions for the first time in history.”

Granny’s Gold Bars Are Key to Vietnam Push to Boost Dong [2013]

“The target of Vietnam’s campaign to stabilize its currency is in the locked bedroom wardrobe of retired civil servant Vu Thi Huong: gold bars.  Huong is among millions of Vietnamese who hold an estimated 300 tons to 400 tons of bullion to store their wealth — a legacy of more than a century of war, revolution and economic turbulence. The central bank wants to convert the hoard, much of it smuggled in, into dong deposits to strengthen the currency, which has slid 21 percent against the dollar in five years. To reduce contraband and persuade people to sell their bullion, the central bank made itself the sole importer and Saigon Jewelry Co. the only legal producer of gold bars.”
