Vietnam police force gold shop to close after USD exchange accusation

“A gold shop in Ho Chi Minh City will temporarily close following a police raid that has raised eyebrows among legal experts.  Police stormed into the shop on Bui Huu Nghia Street at 1 p.m. on Thursday (April 24) claiming they had seen a man trying to exchange a US$100 note for Vietnamese dong.  The police then spent eight hours combing the shop from top to bottom, seizing more than US$14,000 in cash and equipment, including a security camera and a CPU.  Before leaving, the officers sealed off 559 taels of gold on display in the shop.  Police later removed evidentiary seals after Mai produced papers to prove she inherited the gold from her parents.”

Bill Bonner: What I Learned in China About the Fate of the US Dollar

“‘China is the nation to watch,’ begins a Beijing colleague.  It is already the biggest trading nation in the world. And it will soon pass the US as the world’s biggest economy. But what is really important is that it will also overtake the US in two other important categories: military power and money.  Now, the US is making a show of supporting the nations around China… as though it could stop China by teaming up with the Philippines and Japan.  This is like the early 19th century, when France tried to get all of Europe to unite against Britain, the rising power of that era. It didn’t work… You can’t stop a nation whose time has come. And China’s time is coming.'”

Supposed Ruin in Hong Kong Leaves Out the Larger Picture

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“What’s going on in China and Hong Kong is ironic because it seems to mimic much that has held the West back in modern times. In fact, much that China suffers from at its current level of development corresponds to a similar evolution in the West.  From what we can tell, the RMB/Yuan is growing in importance as a currency in Hong Kong. Additionally, Hong Kong’s stock market is now heavily dependent on Chinese-listed companies. In fact, this might explain some of the growing income disparities that the Bloomberg article complains about.  Bloomberg seeks to blame an authoritarian Chinese political influence for what is happening to Hong Kong. But the truth is more complex.”

Russia seeks safe haven in gold, away from dollar and euro

“‘Due to the worsening geopolitical situation, the Central Bank actively redistributed foreign exchange reserves, replacing US Treasury bonds with gold,’ Alfa Bank’s chief economist, Natalya Orlova, told Kommersant.  Instead of buying euros and dollars, Russia’s Central Bank is eyeing the Chinese yuan and the Japanese yen.  Boosting currency swaps and bilateral payments with China and other strategic trade partners will continue to bypass the US dollar. Last week, Russia’s and China’s central banks have agreed to increase currency swaps.  Holding more of these currencies is a logical move for Russia, which has high trade volumes with both China and Japan.”

Japanese Women With Chainsaws Head to the Hills Under Abe’s Plan

“A new wave of women are taking forestry jobs, the result of economic, social and environmental policies sprouting in Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s Japan.  Cedars and cypresses are used to build local homes under the government’s program to encourage the use of domestic wood.  Abe came into office with his three-arrow strategy to end 15 years of deflation that stunted the economy. Nineteen months along, the first two points — monetary and fiscal stimulus — have succeeded in stoking inflation.  Ryosuke Aoki, the 37-year-old president and founder of Tokyo Chainsaws, said 80 percent of the company’s revenue comes from conservation work subsidized by national and local funds.”

H.K. Politician’s Son-In-Law Won’t Face Charges For TSA Impersonation

“When high-powered finance guy Eric Slighton was arrested at SFO after allegedly impersonating a TSA agent and luring women into ‘private screenings,’officials hoped the women he pulled aside would come forward so he could face charges stronger than the public drunkenness and ‘suspicious occurrence’ ones they initially slapped him with. A month later, however, the women have not come forward, and Slighton, who has connections at the very top of Hong Kong’s government, will not be charged.  Reports at the time say that he had entered the security area in khaki pants, a blue polo shirt and blue rubber gloves that officers suspected he swiped ‘to look the part.'”

Sultan of Brunei angers gay activists with bid for top New York hotels

“The controversial Sultan of Brunei is the leading bidder to buy New York’s Plaza Hotel and London’s Grosvenor House, angering gay rights activists who say he is a homophobe whose policies call for the stoning death of homosexuals.  The $2.2 billion sale, which is still being negotiated, would also include downtown Manhattan’s Dream Hotel.  Selling the luxury hotels is Indian tycoon Subrata Roy, who remains jailed in India and is hoping to use the proceeds from the deal to cover his $1.6 billion bond, the Times of London reported.  If the sale is finalized, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah would join two other investors who already own the property, according to the the New York Post.”

For U.S. investors sour on Apple, buying Samsung is tricky [2013]

“Samsung, with a market cap of $236 billion, is not listed as an American Depositary Receipt (ADR) on major U.S. markets like other foreign companies such as Toyota Motor Corp and Sony Corp. Instead, an unofficial version of Samsung trades under the ticker on OTC Markets Group, colloquially referred to as the Pink Sheets.  The rise in unsponsored ADRs came after a SEC rule change in 2008 that allowed depository banks such as BNY Mellon and JP Morgan Chase to launch ADRs based on market demand without the consent of a company.  Listing fees and SEC filing requirements have prompted other major companies to bypass sponsored ADRS as well.”

Singapore’s central bank lost $10.2 billion fighting Bernanke [2013]

“Four men control over 70% of the world’s money supply, giving them control over the price of… everything.  And this system is so absurd that, healthy nations like Singapore are forced to lose billions in order to keep playing the game.  That’s exactly what it is– a game. Like most nations, Singapore has been playing this game for decades while the US changes the rules whenever it sees fit.  And it’s becoming obvious that the cost of playing is now far exceeding the benefit it receives. The hard numbers are very clear on this point.  This spells one inexorable conclusion, game over: a dramatic decline in the US dollar’s role as the global reserve currency in the next few years.”
