Japan equity mutual funds see large inflows on new tax-break scheme

“Japanese retail investors shifted back to equity funds as a new tax-break facility dubbed NISA, for the Nippon Individual Savings Account, kicked off in January.  NISA is aimed at driving massive Japanese savings into stocks and mutual funds.  In December, investors had pulled out from equity funds as they collected proceeds from there ahead of a doubling of Japan’s capital gains tax, which took effect from Jan. 1.  The country’s tax on capital gains and dividends was raised to 20 percent from 10 percent at the start of January, as a special tax break given to support share prices expired.  The Japanese government projects the tax-break accounts could draw more than $250 billion by 2020.”

Jim Rogers: Buy Russia & China

“Russia is very, very cheap, and it’s a very neglected stock market with enormous natural resources. I first went to Russia in 1966 and came away negative, and I stayed negative for the next 46 years, so it’s been a long-term bear for me. But in recent months I’ve started changing my views and have started buying shares in Russia.  Another one might be Japan. I don’t know if Japan is ignored or not, but it’s down 60-70 percent from its all-time highs, so it’s still neglected to some extent. In 20 years, we’ll look back at Japan, and its death knell will be what Mr. Abe did in 2012-2014. But in the meantime, there are staggering amounts of money and spending, and printing has to go somewhere.”

Doug Casey on the Debasement of Money, Language and Banking

casey1202

“I actually just managed to put a little bit of money into a stock trading on the Mongolian stock exchange that is investing in North Korea that makes sense to me. There are always anomalies out there; there are always speculations. My cattle herd here in Argentina keeps growing, and cattle are a truly great investment now – especially here. Next week, I’m flying to Albania to scope out what might be a major oil deal. Perhaps a mania will develop in the companies that are legally growing marijuana in Canada, a space where I recently made an investment. I’m getting involved in a private deal, to export jade from Guatemala to China.”

Israeli Bitcoin Company Opens First Vietnamese Bitcoin Exchange

“The idea to expand into Vietnam was developed over a bitcoin-purchased beer in an Israeli bar. Eli’s friend, Dominik, a German bitcoiner, understood the opportunity for bitcoin in Vietnam, as his wife is Vietnamese.  Bit2C’s stress-tested and proven technology comes at a dire time for Vietnam. The country is a quickly-expanding market, with over 80 million people suffering from the effects of inflation.  Using bitcoin saves an incredible amount on remittances; of massive importance because the Vietnamese population overseas is ‘over 4 million people, [making it] a top 10 country in the remittance market with more than 10.6 billion dollars a year in incoming transactions,’ Dominik explains.”

Crisis looms after Tongan passports sold

“Tonga is slipping into a high-level political crisis after revelations its diplomatic passports have been sold to Chinese nationals on the express order of the island nation’s prime minister.  The issue is splitting the already divided royal family, with King Tupou VI ordering that passports not be sold – but the Queen Mother insisting they be given to her Chinese friends.  Diplomatic passports give holders special high-security access in many airports.  Tonga has had a long history of selling citizenship and passports. In the 1990s it gave them away to runaway despots such as Ferdinand Marcos, of the Philippines, and his family, Hong Kong criminals and Libyan and Palestinian nationals.”

Canadian immigrant investor program scrapped, replacement planned

“The federal government had announced in the February budget it was axing its immigrant investor and entrepreneur programs, wiping from a backlogged waiting list tens of thousands of people who had been willing to lend $800,000 interest-free in return for permanent residence.  But Alexander told the Post this week a new pilot program to attract wealthy immigrants was on its way.  Under the pilot, wealthy immigrants would lend for more than five years at least double the cash they were made to pay under the old program, according to the Post article. The money would be privately managed under the immigration investor venture capital pilot program.”

Hong Kong agrees to hand financial details of Americans to IRS

“Hong Kong tax officials will soon be able to pass information about the finances of Americans working in Hong Kong to their US counterparts under an agreement signed yesterday as part of Washington’s global crackdown on tax evasion.  The Financial Services and Treasury Bureau said the tax-information exchange agreement allowed the US to file a request to the Inland Revenue Department ‘under specified conditions’. The bureau said that provided the basis for a further agreement that would enable US tax authorities to seek information directly from local banks.  Tax experts said the agreement was crucial for America’s controversial anti-tax evasion law, which takes effect in July.”

Cryptocurrency Payment Processor GoCoin Gets $1.5m in Funding

“GoCoin has announced it has raised $1.5m in funding in order to expand its operations as an international payments platform for cryptocurrencies.  GoCoin plans to use the funding to expand its sales and technology teams as demand for cryptocurrency payments grows.  GoCoin competes with Coinbase and BitPay in the bitcoin payment processor market.  A favorable regulatory environment in Singapore led GoCoin to incorporate its business there. And it is focused on markets outside of the US.  GoCoin started to accept litecoin back in January. It recently added support for dogecoin as well.”

Hanoi, Vietnam night streets and market

“Strolling through the Old Quarter of Hanoi, Vietnam, in the evening is a pure delight, especially after a light rain has wet the streets to provide a glistening reflection of the lights from the many restaurants, shops and bars open late. We visit the weekend Night Market, and consider how the economy of Vietnam is doing relatively well.”
