Indonesia Upholds Death Sentence For British Grandmother’s Drug Smuggling

“Indonesia’s highest court has upheld the death sentence for a British woman convicted of smuggling $2.5 million worth of cocaine into the resort island of Bali, a court official said Friday.  Sandiford, 57, was arrested last year when 3.8 kilograms (8.4 pounds) of cocaine was discovered stuffed inside the lining of her luggage at Bali’s airport. During the trial, she said she was forced to carry the drugs by a gang that threatened to hurt her children.  She was found guilty in January by a district court and sentenced to face a firing squad. She lost an appeal three months later when the Bali High Court upheld the lower court’s ruling.”

Kim Jong-un’s ex-lover ‘executed by firing squad’

“The reports in South Korea’s Chosun Ilbo newspaper indicate that Hyon, a singer with the Unhasu Orchestra, was among those arrested on August 17 for violating domestic laws on pornography.  All 12 were machine-gunned three days later, with other members of North Korea’s most famous pop groups and their immediate families forced to watch. The onlookers were then sent to prison camps, victims of the regime’s assumption of guilt by association, the reports stated.  The 12 who were executed were singers, musicians or dancers and were accused of making videos of themselves performing sex acts and then selling the recordings.  The reports stated that both groups have been disbanded.”

56-year-old lover of married Taiwanese man faces 298 years in jail

“A Taiwanese widow who faced the theoretical possibility of 298 years in jail for an affair with a married man has rekindled the debate over the island’s controversial adultery laws. Under Taiwanese law, each offence was worth up to four months in jail, but judges at the district court in central Changhua county decided to reduce the sentence. The man, 50, avoided legal punishment altogether after his wife, who had filed the complaint against the duo after learning of the affair, decided to forgive him and drop the lawsuit against him. The case sparked new calls for adultery to be decriminalised.”

Yale opens campus in Singapore, citing need for ‘critical thinking’ in Asian countries

“The pioneer batch of 157 students from 26 countries — 97 of them Singaporeans — was selected from a pool of over 10,000 applicants and began lessons this month in temporary facilities.  The college’s own purpose-built campus with residential facilities will open in 2015 and is designed to have a full capacity of 1,000 students.  The college is the first established by Yale outside its campus in New Haven, Connecticut.”

The Situation Keeps Getting Worse At Fukushima

“The operator of Japan’s stricken Fukushima nuclear plant said Sunday it had found highly radioactive water dripping from a pipe connecting two coolant tanks at one of four radiation hotspots.  The discovery came hours after Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) said late Saturday that radioactivity at one of the other four sites measured 1,800 millisieverts per hour — a dose that would kill a human left exposed to it in four hours.  The reading was 18 times higher than a recording at the same place taken on August 22, though the company said the first measurement was done with equipment that could only reach up to 100 millisieverts.”

North Korean spy’s memoir details ‘enemization’ training by abducted South Koreans

“After graduation, the focus switched to training the agents to pass as locals. South Koreans abducted and smuggled back into the North were among those who instructed them in mastering the right accents and understanding the social and political culture of the capitalist South.  This ‘enemization’ process gave them their first real taste of life outside the isolated North, as they consumed a daily diet of South Korean TV shows, movies, magazines, newspapers and books. Popular songs and dance moves were memorised, along with the names and careers of prominent TV celebrities and sports stars.”

Do Korea “experts” know what they are talking about?

“There is convincing evidence that most Western ‘experts’ on the DPRK have little, if any, clue what they are talking about. B.R. Myers, one of the very few bona fide experts on Pyongyang and its weird regime, has written at length about just how misguided most of what you’re hearing and reading about North Korea now actually is. In the first place, many commentators apply outdated, Cold War thinking to the DPRK, where it doesn’t fit. Moreover, most ‘experts’ are stunningly ignorant of what North Korea actually is like or how it thinks, resulting in profound Western misreads on why Pyongyang does what it does. Which, given the awesomely high nuclear stakes right now, kinda matters.”

Eric Margolis: Korea, One Of The World’s Five Most Strategic Nations

eric-margolis2

“Amazingly, South Korea’s tough 600,000-man armed forces are under the command of a US four-star general 60 years after the end of the Korean War, backed up by 28,500 US troops that include a full heavy infantry division,  North Korea calls itself the ‘true Korea,’ denouncing the South as ‘puppets of the US imperialists.’ Interestingly, some studies show that many South Koreans share this view and are proud of North Korea’s nuclear weapons program though they want no part of its socialism and self-reliant policy known as ‘juche.'”

US expat in Switzerland builds North Korean schools

“An American retiree living in Switzerland has gained rare access to the pariah state to build schools in the usually off-limits countryside.  Typhoons had destroyed many North Korean schools, built with mud and hay instead of cement, and Carpenter’s foundation agreed to help, becoming one of few independent aid groups in the country.  Carpenter almost fully funds the North Korean projects himself, and laments the difficulty of convincing donors to pitch in. People ‘don’t see the human angle (or) the hardship,’ he said. ‘North Koreans are human beings who laugh and cry like people everywhere,’ he said, describing people with a ‘good sense of humour’ who are curious about the outside world.”

JPMorgan Bribe Probe Said to Expand in Asia as Spreadsheet Is Found

“The Justice Department has joined the SEC in examining whether JPMorgan hired people so that their family members in government and elsewhere would steer business to the firm, possibly violating bribery laws. The scrutiny began in Hong Kong and has now expanded to countries across Asia, looking at interns as well as full-time workers, two people said. The employees include influential politicians’ family members who worked in JPMorgan’s investment bank, as well as relatives of asset-management clients, the people said. Wall Street firms have long enlisted people whose pedigree and connections can win business, a practice that doesn’t necessarily violate the law.”
