New demolition technique shrinks Tokyo hotel ‘in a clean manner’

“Passers-by in Tokyo’s busy Akasaka district have started to notice something odd about a 40-floor hotel — it has shrunk to about half its original height.  Slowly but surely, and with none of the explosions or dust normally associated with the demolition of skyscrapers, the hotel is being torn down.  Engineers reinforced the top floor with steel beams and then effectively lopped it off, keeping it in place to be used as an adjustable lid that can be lowered down the building on an external support frame.  Workers at the Grand Prince Hotel Akasaka have brought in 15 hydraulic jacks on which this ‘lid’ now sits as they remove one floor at a time.”

Detlev Schlichter: Global economic policy now firmly in the hands of money cranks

“During the early honeymoon between ‘Abenomics’ and financial reality, the idea of printing yourself to prosperity is likely to have imitators, with the UK being a prime candidate. In terms of total indebtedness, the UK is the one industrialized country that can compete with Japan, meaning it is in the same supersized debt-pickle. Over at Threadneedle Street, the Deputy Governor of the Bank of England, Paul Tucker, openly fantasized about negative interest rates recently, outgoing Governor Mervyn King voted for more QE (overruled), and Governor-elect Mark Carney promises to be, well, – flexible. Bottom line: desperation is spreading. Watch this place!”

City of Yokohama Mistakenly Tweets of North Korean Missile Launch

“In this environment, it’s easy to make a mistake and jump the gun. And that’s precisely what happened in Yokohama, Japan. On Wednesday, city officials used Twitter to warn of a North Korean missile launch — one that never had happened.  At 8:11 p.m. local time, the official disaster management Twitter account of the city prematurely announced: ‘North Korea has launched a missile’. As it turns out, it was just a misfired tweet that was ready in case of a real launch.  The tweet stayed up for approximately 20 minutes, when the city took it down and posted an official apology (Google Translate), saying the tweet was delivered by mistake.”

Bill Bonner: Will Japan’s radical gamble work?

BillBonner

“The BOJ says it just wants to get inflation to 2%. It says it will buy assets with money that didn’t exist previously…and keep buying…until inflation reaches 2%.  Then what? Well, we guess it will stop. And then what? Then, it will have an economy that has come to expect 70 billion yen in new money every month. And an economy with a monetary base of BOJ assets maybe twice what it is today. People make radical gambles now and then. Businessmen might take a chance now and then. Gamblers might go for long odds. Lovers might hope to get lucky.  For a central bank to make a ‘radical gamble’ bespeaks desperation and lunacy.”

Ignorance is Strength: Kim Jong Un Edition

nodrop6

“For one state to respond to another state’s military aggression by killing, or threatening to kill, its civilian population is monstrous. And if it’s monstrous, it’s monstrous when anyone does it. It would also be monstrous if some purely hypothetical country, the only country in the world with atomic weapons, used them to kill several hundred thousand civilians in two Japanese cities. It would be monstrous if some purely hypothetical country with hundreds of long-range bombers had had, as its official military policy, making first use of nuclear weapons and hitting every major population center in the USSR in retaliation for a conventional incursion into Western Europe.”

CNN previews how war with North Korea would play out

“CNN brought retired General James Marks into their studio on Wednesday afternoon to explain the military strategies North Korea and the United States would likely employ in a conflict.  The country would begin firing artillery into South Korea while deploying special operation forces along the coast of the peninsula. Marks also warned North Korea had sleeper agents in South Korea who would spot targets.  The United States would respond by destroying North Korea’s artillery with its overwhelming naval and aerial power. The U.S. military would then destroy North Korea’s aerial defenses, communication lines, and transportation routes, paralyzing the North within days.”

Rep. Peter King: US could make preemptive strike on North Korea

“Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) said Tuesday that the U.S. had the right to take preemptive military action against North Korea if there was ‘solid evidence’ that Kim Jon Un planned to attack the U.S. or South Korea.  ‘I don’t think we have to wait until Americans are killed or wounded or injured in any way,’ he continued. ‘I’m not saying we should be rushing into war, don’t get me wrong, but if we have solid evidence that North Korea’s going to take action, then I think we have a moral obligation and an absolute right to defend ourselves.’  North Korea’s actions are thought to be driven by additional United Nations sanctions that resulted from its recent nuclear test.”

Why Is the U.S. Funding International Drug Rehabs Known for Torture and Abuse?

“Children are not exempt from indefinite detainment in these camps. UNICEF-sponsored investigations in Laos found 150 detainees under 18 in 2003, and more than 600 children in 2006.  Despite calls from human rights organizations, the United States has continued to pump money into the Somsanga Rehabilitation Center.  In March of last year, 12 United Nations agencies, including the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the World Health Organization, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and UNAIDS, issued a joint statement calling for the closure of drug-user detention centers where they identified grave human rights violations.”

71st Anniversary: Roosevelt’s Concentration Camps

“The U.S. government had several governments in South America round up Japanese residents, who were then shipped to the U.S. The government put them in concentration camps. These camps received no publicity. One of them was in Crystal City, Texas.  This was kidnapping, pure and simple.  This story is so horrifying that the history textbooks never mention it. You will see no show about it on the History Channel. You can read about it here.  These people were sent to Japan after the war.”

QE 3 Moves to Japan

“The Bank of Japan has announced a quantitative easing (mass inflation) QE program that matches Bernanke’s: $75 billion a month in purchases of Japanese government bonds. This is just under $1 trillion a year. But Japan’s GDP is only $6 trillion — 40% the United States’ GDP. This is way beyond Bernanke.  For the Bank of Japan, this is QE1. But it is QE3 in the United States. It’s the same policy.  The government of Japan has always been Keynesian. Now it has adopted desperation Keynesianism: just like the United States and the eurozone.”
