France freezes spending to hit EU targets as slump deepens

“France is to freeze spending on defence, higher education and research in a frantic bid to meet European Union deficit targets this year, tightening fiscal policy yet further as the country slides into deep slump. The severity of the downturn has caught officials by surprise. Markit’s survey data for French manufacturing and services fell to 42.3 in February, plunging at the fastest rate since the financial crisis in early 2009. Anything less than 50 signals contraction.  Markit warned that the country may be tipping into a ‘downward spiral’ as sliding confidence causes businesses to delay spending.”

Tens of Thousands Protest in Spain (as Santa Claus dies)

“On Saturday, tens of thousands marched in cities throughout Spain to protest deep bankster driven ‘austerity’ measures taken by the government. The people are clearly fed up. The sad part of this is that most have no clue as to what are the proper measures that should be taken to reverse the deteriorating economic situation.  The only way Spain gets out of its deteriorating situation is by cutting the red tape that makes it difficult for businesses to operate, and to also cut taxes and government spending, so that the country moves away from its current bureaucratic mess and closer to a free market that can spur energy and creativity.”

U.S. Postal Service to cut Saturday delivery

“The U.S. Postal Service is set to announce that it will discontinue Saturday mail delivery in a cost-saving measure that is expected to save the agency up to $2 billion per year. According to the Associated Press, package delivery will continue six days a week, but regular mail will be limited to Monday to Friday delivery.  The changes are slated to take place in August. Under the new plan, Saturday delivery to post office boxes will continue and post offices that are currently open on Saturdays will remain open.”

Moms in Spain Strip to Raise Money for School Bus

“A group of mothers at a school in eastern Spain has decided to appear nude in an erotic calendar with the aim of collecting the 43,000 euros ($55,000) needed to restore school transportation services for their children.  The problem, the mothers say, is that the 80 students at the school have had their school transportation taken away by decision of the regional authorities, and they say that their kids have to walk 6 kilometers (3.72 miles) over unpaved roads to get to class.  The mothers, most of whom are young, are posing for the calendar inside bus stop shelters or next to the steep embankments of the town.”

The Italian Patient: Resisting Berlusconi’s Charms

“Other populists are also gathering votes in the race to the finish line. One of them is Beppe Grillo of the protest movement ‘Movimento 5 Stelle.’ Grillo travels around the country on a ‘tsunami tour,’ hates Merkel, doesn’t want to repay a cent of debt and is seriously calling upon Al-Qaida to bomb the parliament in Rome, saying that he would even provide the terrorists with the necessary coordinates. Polls estimate that Grillo has the potential to capture 20 percent of the vote. He could become the third-strongest force by securing the support of the sizable number of undecided Italians who are weary of politics.”

Chief Greek Statistician Threatened with Jail For Revealing True Size of Deficit

“At a time when the rest of the world was furious that Greece had artificially improved the country’s budget statistics, Greek prosecutors are accusing Georgiou of doing the opposite. Prosecutors acted after a 15-month investigation into allegations made by a former ELSTAT board member. If found guilty, Georgiou faces five to 10 years in prison.  Some argue that the technocrat Georgiou was serving his former superiors at the IMF and the European statistics agency Eurostat, which is led by a German. This theory holds that Greece was to be brought to its knees by imposing harsh austerity measures based on bloated deficit figures.”

Greeks strip country for scrap cash

“Train lines, bridges, cables and even cemeteries have all been targeted for scrap to feed a market driven by China and India.  Police now arrest an average of four metal thieves every day, compared to a few cases every month before the crisis started in late 2009. The profile of the metal thief is also changing, authorities say, from gypsies and immigrants living on the margins of society to mainstream Greeks who have fallen on hard times.  Athens’ nine-year-old light rail system has been a prime magnet for metal robbers, with at least five major disruptions reported in the past six months due to cable theft.”

Ireland votes to liquidate Anglo Irish Bank

“Anglo Irish Bank will be liquidated under the plan and its outstanding debt will be converted into a new long-term bond intended to spread the repayment over a longer period of time cutting the cost to the state.  At present, the Irish government must pay €3.1bn (£2.7bn) every year to service the debt it took on to rescue the bank, equivalent to about 2pc of the country’s GDP.  The lender’s collapse in 2008 forced the government to provide a guarantee for the debts of the country’s entire banking system.  Ireland was eventually forced to request an €67.5bn bailout from the EU and IMF as the costs of the banking rescue proved too much.”

Man trampled as hundreds of desperate Greeks scuffle for food

“A fruit and vegetable handout in Greece led to one man being trampled on Wednesday, calling attention to desperate conditions. Some 55 tons of produce was given away by farmers who were protesting high production costs.  The chaos was sparked when food stalls ran out of fruits and vegetables, prompting dozens of people to rush to a nearby truck.  It was an ‘every man for himself’ situation as the Greeks shoved their way to the front of the truck, competing for the food that was left. The 55 tons of food was completely gone in under two hours.  A Reuters employee at the scene was hit on the head with cauliflower heads as he attempted to photograph the situation.”
