Australian Bitcoin bank seeks regulatory approval

“Despite increasing talk of a bubble in the peer-to-peer Bitcoin economy, an Australian company is looking to ‘legitimise’ the online currency with the proposed launch of a Bitcoin bank.  Web technology company HotwirePE yesterday announced the launch of Denariuz Bank, which it claimed would be ‘the first bank based solely on crypto-currency in the world’.  HotwirePE chief executive Dr Steven Wright said his firm was working with the Australian Taxation Office and ASIC and is aiming to ‘have a full banking licence from APRA based on Bitcoin’.  HotwirePE has been working closely with senior government officials for the last 10 months to help them understand Bitcoin and how to regulate it.”

ATMs being rolled out in Australia for online currency Bitcoin

“Bitcoin is traded computer to computer and has no central authority or government backing. It’s primarily used to purchase goods on the internet, and has no transaction fees.  A new company, Australian Bitcoin ATMs, is now planning to roll out 100 machines to try to increase the use of the currency. The company’s CEO is Chris Guzowski. ‘You can type in how many Bitcoins you want to sell, then our ATM goes onto an overseas Bitcoin exchange and executes that transaction for you and will spit out the cash for which you sold the Bitcoin for. And the opposite also applies, so you can put cash in and purchase Bitcoin.'”

Bitcoin: The currency that buys a pint one week but a TV the next

“In Australia, where excessive bank profits and fees are universally resented, Bitcoin’s ‘dramatically lower’ transaction fees stand to win wide appeal.  The Old Fitzroy pub, which accepted its first bitcoin in September, was the first Australian bricks-and-mortar business to use the currency. In Melbourne, St Kilda businesses cafe imbiss25 and music, fashion and jewellery store Eclectico now accept the bitcoin. So too do food and vegetable supplier Earth and Sky Organics, and Oakleigh South all-terrain vehicle manufacturer Tomcar.  There is a way for merchants to avoid the bitcoin’s volatility by signing up to Australian company Bitpos.”

Haircuts for a digital dollar? Bitcoin’s small business use

“Cash, credit or…Bitcoin?   Toowoomba barbershop owner Mitch Brownlie is bringing in a cutting-edge method of payment to his businesses – the online currency of Bitcoins.  Mr Brownlie said his interest in the currency had come from the inconvenience of handling cash as a business owner.  ‘You always have to worry about the cash, getting it to the bank. Getting both shops down to the bank, every day, is really inconvenient.  Realistically, people get their wages direct into account, Centrelink directly into their account, why not pay directly from there?’  To pay by Bitcoin, a customer would scan a QR code at the salon with their smart phone.”

Cigar Industry Receives Bitcoin Boost

“Australia’s largest premium cigar retailer, Brisbane-based Fine Cigars Australia began accepting the currency.  The company’s general manager, Matthew Mroczek, said he and the company were already comfortable with bitcoin by that stage. ‘We have been using it for several months now to pay some of our suppliers in places like Mexico and Nicaragua because it is simply a far more efficient method of payment,’ he said.  ‘To go through normal banking channels it would take two days for them to get the money, which delayed the delivery to our customers. Not to mention the problem with currency movements over such a time period.'”

Aussie Mum In Anti-Bitcoin Crusade After Son’s Death

“Anna Skelly came home from holiday with her husband to find her son dead on her bed after what looks to be a bad reaction to cocaine. Cocaine which he reportedly acquired from an online drug marketplace, financed by Bitcoin transactions. Now the Sydney mother is going on a crusade against the crypto-currency, calling on the Federal Government to ban it in Australia.  Anna Skelly has launched her own change.org petition to have Bitcoin banned in Australia.  ‘Tony Abbott,’ the petition starts, ‘commence an inquiry into Bitcoin – it’s protecting drug dealers.'”

Teen Reported to Police After Finding Security Hole in Govt Website

“Joshua Rogers, a 16-year-old in the state of Victoria, found a basic security hole that allowed him to access a database containing sensitive information for about 600,000 public transport users who made purchases through the Metlink web site run by the Transport Department.  Rogers says he contacted the site after Christmas to report the vulnerability but never got a response. After waiting two weeks, he contacted the newspaper to report the problem. When The Age called the Transportation Department for comment, it reported Rogers to the police.”

Bullion worth $200,000 stolen from home by thieves using wheelie bin

“Police say thieves have used a wheelie bin to steal $200,000 worth of gold and silver bullion from the home of a war veteran on Brisbane’s north side.  Thieves entered the home in Ellie Court in Upper Kedron sometime between 6:00pm on New Year’s Eve and 3:00am on New Year’s Day.  They broke into a safe which contained 80 kilograms of gold and silver bullion and coins and loaded the bullion into a wheelie bin to ferry it to their getaway car.  The bullion’s owner, Corporal Christopher Lunt, had saved up the gold and silver from wages paid while he was deployed overseas.  Cpl Lunt says he was out of the house celebrating the new year when the robbery occurred.”
