The Minimum Wage and Unemployment in Australia

“In the USA, the youngest workers have a higher minimum wage than in Australia, but the wage then crosses over to a higher minimum in Australia once a worker reaches 18 years of age. By the age of 21 the minimum wage in Australia is substantially higher, but by then work skills have also grown substantially.  The simple comparison of the minimum wage in Australia with minimum wage in the USA tends to use the headline rate for adults over 21 years of age. This is quite misleading, because there is a large class of younger workers where the minimum wage in Australia is much lower, and these tend to be the workers most affected by minimum wage laws.”

Australian Bitcoin bank ‘hacked’, $1million+ stolen

“Tradefortress, a young Sydney man who told ABC News he was over 18 but only just, refused to give his real name to Fairfax Media.  He offered the wallet service through a website called Inputs.io. The site claimed to be ‘’one of the most secure web wallets on the market’’ and charged customers a small fee to store their coins.  As well as utilising two-factor authentication and location-based email confirmation, it claimed it was set-up to prevent ‘the hack of Bitcoins even if the web server was compromised’.  It now seems that claim has been proven untrue, with Tradefortress telling users on the site: ‘I don’t recommend storing any Bitcoins accessible on computers connected to the internet.'”

Australian startups eye Bitcoin opportunities

“Jamie McIntyre, CEO of the 21st Century Education and Media group, said the company sees accepting Bitcoin as a way to generate new sales. ‘It is a relatively safe currency, except for its volatility in price,’ he said.  ‘Nevertheless, it has a huge upside and if only a percentage of sales are done via Bitcoin, businesses have very little to lose but a lot more to gain by tapping in to new customers.’  The other companies using Bitcoin also said they believed accepting the digital currency would boost business. ‘Because it is such a different way to pay online, it just opens up avenues for additional customers that you would not normally get,’ said McCulloch.”

You can now buy a car with Bitcoin in Australia

“The good news is that you can now buy a car with Bitcoin. The bad news is that the only ones available are commercial off-road vehicles built in Australia and sold online.  The vehicle manufacturer is Tomcar, and the vehicles are sort of a cross between a 1970s dune buggy and something out of Mad Max. They’re built for the ranching, farming, defense, and tourism industries, and come in various versions for different applications, including some that look like armored cars.  Being innovative is just part of who Tomcar is, CEO David Brim says.”

Australia releases draft legislation repealing mining tax

mineweblogo4

“‘The MRRT is a complex and unnecessary tax which struggled to raise the substantial revenue predicted by the former Government,’ Treasurer Joe Hockey said in a statement today. ‘Further still, this failed tax imposed significant compliance costs on one of our most important industries, while damaging business confidence which is critical to future investment and jobs.’  ‘The former Government linked a number of spending measures to the failed MRRT,’ he said. ‘These came at a significant cost to the Budget, to the point where the Government is borrowing money to pay for these commitments.'”

Australian Police Hide Speed Cameras For ‘Safety’

“Last week, police in Victoria, Australia revised speed camera policies to restore use of hidden speed trap cameras in the name of officer safety. Under previous rules, speed cameras were meant to be clearly visible so that motorists would slow down, achieving the stated goal of the automated enforcement program.  The new policy allows the mobile road speed camera operator (MRSCO) to hide behind signs or trees in the name of hiding from angry motorists for safety.  Another change in the rules overturned a ban on placing a speed camera within 300 yards of the bottom of a hill.  Fixed and mobile speed cameras in Victoria issued 1,106,773 tickets in the financial year ending June 2013.”

Virtual reality the drawcard in Melbourne’s bid to lure travellers

“Tourism Victoria is starting a $3.6 million ‘go before you go’ campaign to attract tourists from Sydney.  When the campaign is launched at 10am on Wednesday, four young bicycle-pedalling, so-called Remote Control Tourists – two men and two women wearing helmets fitted with video cameras – will be available to help social media devotees get a virtual tour of Melbourne’s hot spots before they go there.  The would-be tourists can send the Remote Control Tourists to Melbourne’s laneways, bars and cafes before deciding to visit the city.  The Remote Control Tourists will be available between 10am and 8pm each day until Sunday.”
