‘Catch Me If You Can’-inspired Italian man impersonates airline pilot

“The unnamed man, who was going by the name Andrea Sirlo, tricked his way into the cockpit of at least one jet by posing as a pilot. He was arrested at a bar in Turin airport wearing a homemade pilot’s uniform and with forged ID cards on his person, police said. The case mirrors that of the US conman Frank Abagnale Jr, who flew more than a million miles on over 250 flights to 26 countries in the 1950s after securing a PanAm uniform by fraud and forging a pilot’s licence.”

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Philadelphia-flight-attendant-gun-screenshot-0924121.jpg

“The unidentified Republic Airlines attendant had forgotten her gun was inside her bag when she went through a security checkpoint.  Authorities say she had a legal permit for the gun. She was taken into custody and received a summary citation for disorderly conduct before being released.  The gun fired one round while an officer was trying to take the bullets out, but no one was injured. Internal Affairs is investigating the incident, while the officer, also unidentified, will receive weapons-handling training.”

Why ‘Government’ and ‘Competent’ Are Antonyms

“The newly hired director for Massport, the bureaucracy that runs Boston’s Logan Airport, frankly admits, ‘I’m obviously not an expert in aviation…‘ So why did Massport’s board choose him? There are probably many reasons, including favors owed and personal ties, but the one for public consumption is ‘He’s a guy that cares about public service.’  Imagine a supermarket, bowling alley, or doctor’s office hiring someone to run the place who knows nothing of groceries, bowling, or medicine. But hey, the ignoramus has a tremendous track record otherwise.”

Regional airlines face closings, bankruptcy

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/regional-airlines-face-closings-bankruptcy-8v24184t-x1.jpg

“Regional airlines operate half the nation’s scheduled flights, but now, several of those carriers are being closed or are in bankruptcy court protection. As a result, many smaller communities may lose some or all of their air service.   Regional airlines also worry that a new rule being devised by the FAA that would require co-pilots to have the same 1,500 hours in the air as captains could result in fewer pilots to fly regional routes, that they’ll go to better-paying jobs at big airlines, or even to piloting cargo or business jets.  Many smaller cities could be left with fewer flights or no flights at all.”
