Peter Schiff: Death of a Patriot

“My father Irwin A. Schiff was born Feb. 23rd 1928, the 8th child and only son of Jewish immigrants, who had crossed the Atlantic twenty years earlier in search of freedom. As a result of their hope and courage my father was fortunate to have been born into the freest nation in the history of the world.  But when he passed away on Oct. 16th, 2015 at the age of 87, a political prisoner of that same nation, legally blind and shackled to a hospital bed in a guarded room in intensive care, the free nation he was born into had itself died years earlier.”

Irwin Schiff, RIP

“Irwin Schiff, imprisoned for his resistance to the federal income tax, died yesterday. Efforts by his son, the noted financial commentator Peter Schiff, to secure his release from prison so that he could die with his family were unsuccessful. Schiff’s sad passing illustrates an essential truth about the state: if you resist its orders, you will be dealt with by force.”

Taxpayers Sue IRS For Illegal Account Access In Data Breach

“The action was filed [after] 330,000 taxpayer accounts were illegally accessed by criminals using the ‘Get Transcript’ application on the IRS web site.  The complaint alleges that the illegal access of the system ‘would have been prevented, had the IRS fixed the known security deficits in its data storage system,’ that IRS security was inadequate despite the fact that IRS ‘knew that cyber-criminals were highly motivated to hack the IRS system in order to steal taxpayer information that has significant value in the black market.’ Finally, the suit says that IRS ‘deliberately and intentionally decided not to implement the security measures needed to prevent the subject data breach.'”

IRS: 330K Taxpayers Hit by ‘Get Transcript’ Scam

“The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) disclosed today that identity thieves abused a feature on the agency’s Web site to pull sensitive data on more than 330,000 potential victims as part of a scheme to file fraudulent tax refund requests. The new figure is far larger than the number of Americans the IRS said were potentially impacted when it first acknowledged the vulnerability in May 2015 — two months after KrebsOnSecurity first raised alarms about the weakness. The IRS’s experience should tell consumers something about the effectiveness of the technology that the IRS, banks and countless other organizations use to screen requests for sensitive information.”

Georgia’s civil asset forfeiture ‘reform’ to go into effect

“HB 233 was signed by Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal to reform civil asset forfeiture laws. The new legislation requires law enforcement agencies to be more transparent about how seized money is spent and requires the money to be used only for law enforcement purposes. However, the burden will still be on property owners to get their property back as law enforcement’s burden of proof is still low, requiring only a ‘preponderance of evidence,’ or 50 percent plus 1 in order to seize property.  One of the worst parts of Georgia’s civil asset forfeiture laws is instead of seized property going to a general state fund or the local governing body, the seized assets go to the law enforcement agency.”

Leave “My Cash” Alone, Says Oklahoma Sheriff

“After a concerned individual recounted his unfortunate encounters with Oklahoma police, Sheriff Edwards dismissed him as having ‘bad luck.’ It seems that Oklahomans must count on ‘luck’ not to be improperly targeted for their property.  SB 838 would also transfer the assets seized to the State General Fund and away from police department budgets. Edwards claimed that this money was critical to combatting drugs and other public health risks. However, a federal audit of Oklahoma law enforcement agencies show that large sums of seized assets are returned to agency personnel in the form of salaries and benefits, for administrative tasks, and non-law enforcement purposes.”

Santa Ana Police want video of them stealing marijuana suppressed

“The three Santa Ana police officers who raided a medical marijuana dispensary earlier this year and were caught on camera stealing pot and degrading a disabled woman have filed a lawsuit to block the video’s use in the trial against them. The Orange County Register reported on August 4 that the police, who remain unidentified but can be seen here, believed they had disabled all of the security cameras and had a reasonable expectation of privacy.  This particular shop, Sky High, was under suspicion of operating without a permit, because in many the United States you must have permission from the government to engage in commerce to make a living.”

Water rationing, tax and rate hikes add to woes of Puerto Ricans

“Puerto Ricans are learning to live without water on an island that already was suffering an economic crisis.  Rationing rules that had meant water coming through the pipes only one day out of three will increase the cutoff to one day out of four starting next week, government officials say.  The situation has grown so dire that Puerto Rico’s water and sewer company announced that it would spend about $200,000 to use ‘cloud seeding’ in hopes of creating rain clouds over three of the island’s main reservoirs.  The drought comes as Puerto Rico struggles in a nearly decade-long economic slump that has hit the government’s coffers and led authorities to raise the sales tax, even on bottled water.”

European Court of Justice Official Proposes Bitcoin VAT Exemption

Citing existing exemptions for currency and money transactions in Europe’s VAT Directive, Advocate General Juliane Kokott urged the court to opt against applying a tax to bitcoin purchases and sales. She further argued that bitcoin, while not legal tender, is still a form of money.  Swedish tax officials asked the ECJ to look into the matter last June. At the time, the Skatterverket – Sweden’s tax office – challenged a court decision that ruled bitcoin transactions in the country should be exempt from VAT.  The publication of the European Court of Justice’s opinion follows the release of bitcoin VAT exemptions by various EU member states.”

Women posed as fake brides to scam ISIS out of $3000

“It started a few months ago, when one of the women – whose first name is Mary (or Maryam), according to Life News Russia – got a message on a social network from a stranger.  The young man said he was from Syria. After correspondence went back and forth for a while, he invited Mary to drop everything and start a new life with the militants.  Sure, sounds great, Mary said, but no can do – I’m broke.  No problem, he said, and threw some money her way.  Mary allegedly agreed, took the money, and shut down her social media accounts.  According to Life News, the three women had other men to milk, and two other members of the Islamic State transferred more money, with similar results.”
