US War on Your Passport Continues

“Buried inside the US highways funding bill is a provision to revoke or deny issuance of a US passport to anyone who has a large outstanding tax debt to the US Internal Revenue Service.  As can be seen from the summary, this measure threatening to imprison Americans within (or outside) US borders is simply viewed as a means by which to raise revenue. The hoped-for increase in revenue coming from this threat is considered an ‘offset’ to the money being spent on the highway bill — in other words the threat to imprison US citizens within their own country or freeze them out is considered appropriate incentive to force them to pay what the government claims it is owed.”

Clinton’s Startup Tax Will Crush New Businesses

“Hillary Clinton has announced that she will, if elected, raise the capital-gains tax to a maximum that equals the highest income tax bracket. She hopes to promote long-term investments by penalizing short-term ones with a tax rate that gets lower the longer an investment is held, reaching the current 20% rate only after six years.  This, Ms. Clinton says, would allow a CEO to focus on the company’s true interests rather than just making the next quarter. It is, unfortunately, exactly the sort of plan you would expect from someone who has never started a company — and who doesn’t seem to know anyone who has.”

He Beat the IRS in Court, But They Still Won’t Make Him Whole

“In a number of similar cases, the government has argued that because the seizure case was dismissed without prejudice, the plaintiff does not count as the ‘prevailing party’ under CAFRA and therefore is not entitled to full recompense.  In his response to the government’s motion, Institute for Justice attorney Rob Johnson hit the nail on the head, writing, ‘The government’s gambit to evade its statutory obligations should not be rewarded. Having dragged Claimants into ten months of costly and unnecessary legal proceedings, the government should be required to make Claimants whole.’  This is not a new gambit, by the way.”

Ruling Allows Officials to Seize Your House Because It’s ‘Ugly and Dumb’

“What many people do not know is that the plan could have been finished without destroying many of the homes that were ultimately seized through eminent domain. Pfizer executives, however, said that they didn’t want their beautiful headquarters ‘surrounded by tenements.’  Think about that. A large corporation was going to receive a gigantic gift, but still felt empowered to demand that people whose homes could have been preserved must nevertheless be forced out because, as the president of NLDC put it, their houses looked ‘ugly and dumb.’ Thus we see one of the hidden consequences of eminent domain – it engenders a domineering, elitist attitude.”

“You? A Tax Evader?”

“It’s no secret that governments worldwide are broke. One country after another is cutting social benefits and taking other measures to reduce government spending.  Take France, for instance. It’s under pressure from the EU to reduce its budget deficit to 3% of GDP. That’s the maximum permitted under the Maastricht Treaty, the agreement underpinning the EU. Currently, it’s at about 4%.  To comply with these rules, France cut family allowances and reduced grants to local authorities. It’s also started a renewed crackdown against tax evasion. It even laid off 7,500 soldiers. But that’s not all. France also recently expanded incentives for new residents.”

Greek Banks Reopen but Cash Limits Remain and Taxes Soar

“The cash-strapped nation got a short-term loan from European creditors to pay more than 6 billion euros ($6.5 billion) owed to the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank.  But for most Greeks, already buffeted by six years of recession, Monday was all about rising prices as tax hikes demanded by creditors took effect. There are few parts of the Greek economy left untouched by the steep increase in the sales tax from 13 to 23 percent. strict controls on cash flows, including a ban on check-cashing and payments abroad as well as limits on cash withdrawals, remained in effect.  New rules permit the withdrawal of up to 420 euros a week.”

Berkeley’s new soda tax panel begins allocating seized funds

A new Berkeley ‘panel of experts’ charged with allocating money collected from the city’s recently implemented soda tax convened for the first time Tuesday night, electing Jennifer Brown and Xavier Morales as chair and vice chair, respectively.  Brown, a parent and soda tax activist, and Morales, executive director of the Latino Coalition for a Healthy California, will lead the nine-person panel, officially titled the ‘Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Product Panel of Experts,’ in bi-monthly or monthly meetings that will establish the direction of funding from Berkeley’s new sugar-sweetened beverage tax, which was approved by voters in November.  The soda tax had brought in $116,000 in its first month.”

IRS Agents Rob Convenience Store

“In June 2014, the government seized Ken Quran’s entire bank account—more than $150,000. This was money that Ken worked for years to earn, and that he was counting on for his retirement. Ken had no prior warning before the government seized the account. The government told him they were taking the money because he withdrew cash from the bank in amounts under $10,000.”

Freedom or the Slaughterhouse? The American Police State from A to Z

AGOW_SMALL1

“Despite the best efforts of some to sound the alarm, the nation is being locked down into a militarized, mechanized, hypersensitive, legalistic, self-righteous, goose-stepping antithesis of every principle upon which this nation was founded. All the while, the nation’s citizens seem content to buy into a carefully constructed, benevolent vision of life in America that bears little resemblance to the gritty, pain-etched reality that plagues those unfortunate enough to not belong to the rarefied elite. For those whose minds have been short-circuited into believing the candy-coated propaganda peddled by the politicians, here is an A-to-Z, back-to-the-basics primer of what life in the USA is really all about.”

Swiss court rules handing over bank employee info to US illegal

“A Swiss court has ruled that Credit Suisse’s decision to provide US tax authorities with information on an employee was illegal, according to the ruling made public Monday.  In April 2012, the Swiss government gave 11 Swiss banks the go-ahead to accommodate a US tax evasion probe and hand over the names of thousands of their employees and consultants working with American clients.  Fearful of harsh US penalties and prosecution, the banks then met Washington’s demands, handing over personal information about numerous staff members, and reportedly also making personal documents, emails and details of telephone calls available.”
