The Police State and Property Taxes

“Once a video of the Dent incident became public, the officer lost his job. He’s now on trial, facing charges of mistreatment of a prisoner.  Dent also decided to sue the city of Inkster, Michigan, where the incident occurred. Surprisingly, he won. The city of Inkster settled for $1.4 million.  The problem is, Inkster doesn’t just have an extra $1.4 million laying around. So what did the local politicians do? They decided to raise property taxes.  A local media source estimates the new property tax will amount to about $179 on a home valued at about $55,400.  Now that doesn’t sound like a lot. But consider that the median income in Inkster is just $26,500 and that 40% of its people live below the poverty line.”

Chicago Public Schools’ pain is these financial firms’ gain

“Struggling to make payments for pensions and pay down billions of dollars in debt, the Chicago Public Schools last week announced 1,050 layoffs and $200 million in spending cuts to keep the school system afloat.  Dozens of financial and legal firms have been paid $18.1 million in fees from CPS borrowing and debt-refinancing deals since 2011, according to records obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times.  CPS still owes billions on borrowing deals dating to the mid-1990s, when then-Mayor Richard M. Daley took formal control of the school system, which then began renovating and building schools using borrowed money.”

Money laundering investigation stymied by China, Italy says

“In April, China launched a new initiative, ‘Skynet,’ to trace fugitives and their overseas money and released a list of its 100 most wanted economic criminals. Forty of them are thought to be in the U.S, according to the party’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection. Many of the transfers, fractioned into small sums to avoid scrutiny, were a way for Chinese immigrants to avoid paying taxes, according to hundreds of pages of court documents reviewed by The Associated Press. Other migrants were caught with heaps of counterfeit purses and shoes. Police also traced money to men running Chinese prostitution rings.”

Indian in US? Your Account is Now Under Delhi Surveillance

“Thousands of Indian citizens in the US – from IT workers, health professionals, students and everyone else under the sun – will soon be innocent victims to snooping by the Indian government. If an Indian citizen holds a bank account in the US, minute details about his/her bank account will be shared with New Delhi by Washington. Although India gets access only to bank account information of Indian citizens, the US can get access to even information of ‘non-US entities’ operating in India if it has even one American working for them. That means information about any Indian corporation or organisation would be provided to Washington on request, if it has an American on rolls.”

County sheriff has used stingray over 300 times with no warrant

“The sheriff in San Bernardino County—east of Los Angeles County—has deployed a stingray hundreds of times without a warrant, and under questionable judicial authority.  In response to a public records request, the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department (SBSD) sent a rare example of a template for a ‘pen register and trap and trace order’ application which, surprisingly, cites no legal authority on which to base its activities. The SBSD did not respond to Ars’ request for comment. Further, the SBSD, like other departments nationwide, maintains a questionable non-disclosure agreement (NDA) with the FBI to dismiss cases rather than reveal information in court about stingrays.”

NYPD’s Crackdown on “Manspreading”: Enforcing Courtesy At Gunpoint

“The Police Reform Organizing Project (PROP) puts together a report called ‘How They Get You‘.  People (mostly young non-white men) are arrested and held for hours, or overnight, or for several days, for trivial charges.  PROP’s report, which you should read if you can bear it, records arrests of people for putting stickers on scaffolds, for dropping a dog’s leash long enough to scoop dog poop from the sidewalk, for standing in the hallways of buildings where they live, and for swerving a bike to avoid being hit by a car and landing on the sidewalk.  And to that proud list of protections, we can now add arrests made for ‘manspreading.'”

The Government Tells Ross Ulbricht He Owes It $183,961,921

“In a memo on Thursday, government prosecutors imposed a money judgement against the Ulbricht equal to $183,961,921. They came to that number based on the transactional records from Silk Road showing the amount of illegal drug sales as $182,960,285 combined with the transactions for fake identification equal to $1,001,636.  The government contends Ulbricht is liable for all transactions on Silk Road because of the structure of the site. Ulbricht will be required to pay the full amount of money, which is likely not dischargeable in bankruptcy.”

India gold smuggling at all-time high, despite Nepali kingpin’s death

“In two years–since government increased duty on gold to 10% to rein in a yawning current account deficit—gold smuggling has grown by 900%.  That as an accepted principle seizures could be less than 10% of actual smuggling, the figures look even more ominous.  Sources say gold has also begun to be smuggled in ever unique ways and from rather unexpected corners. There is a silver lining to the grim story though. There is an unexpected drop in Nepal which had seen a massive spurt in gold smuggling in the past couple of years. The reason: the kingpin of illicit yellow metal trade in the Himlayan nation died under the rubble of his house in Kathmandu during the recent quake.”

Is Your Out-of-State LLC “Doing Business” in California?

“Note that the FTB’s determination of when an out-of-state LLC must file tax returns is in contrast with the California Corporations Code.  Under the California Corporations Code, any entity that ‘actively engages in any transaction in California for the purpose of financial gain or profit’ must register with the Secretary of State.  But an out-of-state corporation is not considered to be transacting business in California merely because it is a member or a manager of a domestic or out-of-state LLC [..].  Moreover, the new California Revised Uniform Limited Liability Company Act of January 1, 2014 provides that an out-of-state LLC ‘may’ register in California and does not impose penalties for failing to do so.”

It’s Very, Very Easy for Hackers to Steal Your IRS Account

“Long story short: You should register your IRS.gov account, because it’s frightfully easy for hackers to do it for you.  The craziest thing about this saga is just how easy it apparently was to hack into the IRS system. It’s not even hacking really, since the system is protected by so-called knowledge-based authentication (KBA). The fraudsters who broke into Kasper’s account did so by guessing some basic information about his life—information that was readily available elsewhere on the web. A security researcher can do the same thing in a matter of minutes.”
